I wanted to like this place. I did. And if you want pretty candy for a gift, it is lovely and there is a very large variety. BUT if you are looking for quality chocolate that tastes good, this is not the place. The white chocolate is tasteless. If anything it tastes like the cheap palm oil they sell a white baking "chips." It definitely does not have that wonderful cocoa butter taste. The milk chocolate is similarly bland and very uninspiring tasting. It's flat. It is lacking that wonderful buttery flavor of quality chocolate. And it is missing that wonderful cocoa taste. The dark chocolate is similarly bland. It lacks the depth you want with the coffee notes and smoky notes. The chocolate is just way too expensive for the inferior quality. It's not what you'd expect from a homemade chocolate store. Frankly the quality of commercial high end chocolate is better. All in all, I would only go here if you are looking for a pretty gift for kids who don't know better or adults who don't. But it isn't the place if you're looking for good chocolate.... In reference to the comment below, I am from Northern NJ but my family lives in Brick, which I was here and tried it. I happen to find Genevieve's to be phenomenal, but more mainstream and limited in terms of selection, so I tried here because I am often in the area. The other place in Woodland Park I am also familiar with, and it is very good, but not like Genevieve's or like Krause's, my other usual go to. As I said this chocolate may be the go to for many of those in the area - clearly it has been for many years - but I have had what I prefer better, and will stick with them until I find something even better. Chocolate and candy are very much an individual preference, so this just wasn't mine and so I shared my take on it. You make the best of everything! I live in Washington state so my experience is through your online order. I bought taffy, caramel apples, milk chocolate caramels, chocolate fudge, orange cream fudge, ranch popcorn, and dill popcorn. Your caramel is amazing, so rich and flavorful. It makes for the best caramel apple I've ever add! The caramel apples were my favorite item I think. I appreciate that you use a good, fresh apple for these, it just makes them perfect! The caramel is also is perfect with the milk chocolate coating. The fudge is amazing, perfect consistency and perfect flavor! Taffy is so good. I'll admit I ate way more at once than I should have because I couldn't stop myself because of how good it was. I don't know if it'd ever be possible but I'd love if you could make just caramels for sale (without chocolate). Also if you could ever make potato chips with your dill pickle flavor (used on the popcorn) I'd be in love Popcorn was perfect and flaverful. I can't wait to try more of your flavors. I'm thankful I live on the other side of the country, because if I lived there I'm sure I'd give you all my money and I'd probably end up weighing 800 lbs. I have been driving down to Brick for over 10 years and its probably close to 20. My oldest is 27 and I only know of one time when he did not have Van Holtens. They use to have a place in Kearny but when that closed I started driving to Brick and my kids, 27, 18, 17 and 15 are so happy I drive down every Easter. The selections are awesome and the quality of cholcate is still better then any other and well worth the 1 hr drive to get there. The staff is very helpful which is an added bonus. I learned this year someone has been driving longer then me so I will plan of still driving when I start to have grandkids. Thank you John and team.... read more

I came here after finding out the seaside location was closed. I really wanted a bucket of taffy, and a caramel apple. The taffy they had here, only sold by the bag if you want to choose your own flavors, (can't do a larger bucket like seaside location) was hard as a rock, some of the pieces disintegrating in my hand. Everything else at the counter was rushed and you just get packed in like sardines, yelling over everyone else as someone behind the counter tries to take your order. Because of how far I drove to come here, I settled on some chocolate pretzels. Hopefully these will be fresh, but seeing that the walls were lined with containers full of back-stock of the flavors, I'm questioning how long ago anything was made. Everything at seaside is always fresh when I go, so next time I'll avoid the brick location and call ahead to make sure seaside is open. read more

The store is Very nice and clean. The people are very helpful and friendly and the sweets are delicious. But the prices seem very high. As much as I loved the candy, sadly I cannot afford to go back. First off, the homemade chocolates are very good both quality and taste. However, after waiting a good 5 to 10 minutes for service, with about 5 staff members totally ignoring customers behind the counter, I literally had to flag someone down to help me and other customers. Nothing is worse than feeling like you are invisible. Upon checkout, no hello or thank you: just "have a good day". It felt as if they thought they were doing you some kind of favor by taking your money. I will never go there again. In addition, the storefront looks like a "tacky" thrift shop. If you want great chocolate and a staff that truly appreciates your business, I would recommend the Caramel Shop although it is a hike to get to from Brick. read more

OMG. Amazing. You won't regret it. It's a HUGE store with lots of variety. We were there on Valentine's night. We spent $25 and came home with chocolate covered strawberries, fudge, and assorted candies. So far we've tried the salted caramel (amazing!!!!!), the chocolate covered s'more, chocolate covered PB&J sandwich and chocolate covered strawberries. Absolutely divine. Have lived in the area for 16 years and just discovered Van Holten's! I was so excited that this awesome shop is pretty close to home. I purchased coconut clusters for my sister and she could hardly bite off a piece, I think she felt bad and told me they were fine. Fast forward a few weeks...Imagine my disappointment when my niece went in and purchased macaroons only to realize that they were as hard as rocks and they weren't cheap!! I was wondering how fresh the candy could actually be in a store that size in this neighborhood, I guess I just found out! They also had a lot of Easter candy...well before Christmas! We just got back from a tour of this chocolate store that the owner held for our brownie/girl scout troop and it was wonderful!! I cannot say enough good things about the people who own and run this shop they were such nice people. My daughter had the best time and we are so grateful for the kindness they showed all our girls. I ended up buying a bunch of chocolate afterwards and its beyond delicious very tasty and fresh!!!! I will def be back. I highly recommend this place! If you have a girl scout troop this is a really cool place to have a tour. read more

They buy Raspberry Jelli rings for $3.00 a pound add some chocolate to them and sell them for over $20 a pound. Are you kidding me? How has this place not been investigated for price gouging?? The Jelli rings were stale even, never had that problem with Joya. First time in the Brick location and my last. So much greed going on here. Inattentive and disinterested staff. Couldn't get a second of anyone's attention. Came in with a coupon that no one seemed able to process. A big mystery, apparently ( I think it was 10 percent off- a real mind blower!) Finally got out of the messy, dirty overcrowded overpriced store, and the candy we brought home was average at best. Death by chocolate is by far my favorite. And the cherry buttons chewy candies I can eat a pound in less then 20 min. They sell them to me by the pound.
