I needed a new Primary Care doctor because the doctor I had was not friendly and didn't seem too interested & the office looked like it hadn't been updated since the 1970's. In addition, I had a 9am appointment and she didn't even come in until 10:15 am! So this time, I did my research first and found Dr Michele Moscato of Vanguard Medical Group. My first appointment was Monday, 7/25/18. I got there and the place was spotless. The receptionist who signed me in was very efficient and kind. I could tell she liked her job, she was very friendly & smiling the whole time. She then sent me to the back where I was greeted immediately by Evie. She took my history and then Dr Moscato came in. The exam room was new and spotless too, you could tell this place cleaned their rooms constantly . Dr Moscato was very nice and listened to me with interest. When we were done she took me out and had her staff do my referral immediately. I was able to make my appointment with the specialist by the time I got home. I would highly recommend this group to anyone needing a good primary care. I especially wanted a female so that's why I choose Dr Moscato & it seems, I really lucked out. Laura Cannito gaslit me about Wellbutrin making me fall asleep, told me that my "issues were too complex for her to handle" and didn't even give me a recommendation for another therapist before dropping me, denied me my Zoloft when I was in withdrawal and had the gall to tell me that I was behaving badly when I was *in withdrawal.* I had to scramble to find a new therapist and psychiatrist because she offered me no help. Moreover, she kept my mother as a patient, so it was a personal issue with me. She had no empathy for me and was condescending and egotistical. As for the other doctors--I spent nearly three decades being gaslit about my medical issues and blamed for them. The doctors knew that I was under severe stress and that cortisol affects everything. They nonetheless blamed me for my poor sleep (I was an unpaid caregiver for my parents), issues with diabetes (they kept telling me that "you need to lose weight" as though that was the *only* way to manage it and it was just on me to fix this), my extremely heavy periods ("you need to lose weight and it'll go away!"-- it did not), and felt dismissed. I didn't realize until I left the area how much I'd been gaslit. read more

Horrible. I was 21 at the time, and the doctor (who's now thankfully retired) that saw me, sl*t shamed me for being on birth control. I'm not a doctor, but many young women go on the pill for countless reasons such as POS, hormone imbalance, etc. The doctor questioned me on why I was on the pill, as if that's her business since shes not my OB. I informed her, I did not want to get pregnant. She then said "well do you want kids?". MA'AM, obviously I don't want kids now, and if not your business if I do want kids in the future as you are here to give me my annual exam. I was so disappointed by the level of professional, as a woman of color, I was hoping to feel more comfortable with another woman of color doctor, but she ruined it for me. I do not recommend Vanguard Medical Group in Verona. The office lies to you. Went in with severe kidney pain on a Saturday. Was told they would immediately request approval from the insurance. They said they do this online, and it usually takes 24-48 hours. Waited and called on Monday and was told they did process the request and there was nothing they could do to expedite. Office manager advised she checked and the request was in and she called encore and was told that they would not expedite. I called again today and was told there was nothing they could do since it is the typical insurance company issue. I did not trust what they were saying. i called Encore who approves the procedures and was told the following: Vanguard Medical Group only put in the request Yesterday and have the time stamp of 1:33.48 - so Vanguard was misrepresenting the truth. How horrible. Encore advised if VanGuard had provided more and requested expediting, it would not have remained even in the 24 - 48 cue. I do not trust this facility at all and something should be done when an organization can hurt or not care about patient care. Never Never go to this Group. We asked if Dr. Mazzella could speak about the testing. We were told that even though he was there in the office, they had to write him an email. Again, something should be done about them. I'm a patient for approx 20 years. I received a text from my mail away plan that my RX was denied. I wrote to my PA who is great and asked for a call back - nothing. I called again at the end of the day and spoke to a nasty little snot who told me that she just logged into the portal - I had to make an appt I hadn't been there is over 6 months - not true. I said I wanted to speak to her - nothing. The office manager got on the phone and said I was correct my RX shouldn't have just been denied and yes I did have an appointment within 6 months. She would see if she could refill it for 1 week until I made an appointment - 5 days later, no refill, no call. I had to go into the office to meet with another PA who says she's not comfortable filling this medication or my other meds. It would seem she went through my chart and reported to a supervisor that she was not comfortable with my meds. While she sat there with her paper mask, she decided I should go to an endocronologist and a nutritionist and my migraine meds that I have had to take my entire life in some way are really weight loss medication. She also researched another medication, but is uncomfortable with that as well. Maybe Blue Cross should be uncomfortable paying for the office visit. I told her I want a call back from the supervising physician - no call. I called the office manager who seemed to be a pretty capable person - no call. Find another physician. This has to be the absolute WORST practice I have ever been to. From top to bottom, just absolutely horrendous. My wife and I tried to go for our yearly physicals being that we just moved to a neighboring town and my appt got cancelled one day prior. My wife's appointment has gotten cancelled 3 times now and they still have not seen her. When a doctor finally saw me (Dr. Oppong) I was diagnosed with shingles and the doctor gave me almost no guidance whatsoever. I had complications post this appt and I can't get any sort of direction as to what to do and he even switched up my medicine without telling me first, I only found out when I went to Walgreens. I just got the worst treatment from an on call doctor. I have a very bad sinus infection which I have been trying to treat myself. Finally I decided I had to see the doctor. I went in and was told by a doctor that a prescription for an antibiotic would be sent to CVS. CVS never got it. I called Vanguard and the on call doctor had the receptionist tell me he would not call it in. that I would have to go in to see the doctor. No explanation why. So here I sit with my head hurting my stomach queasy my ears banging with no meds. read more

The doctors at this location have always been professional and efficient. The last time I saw a physician's assistant, she made a comment to me that was completely inappropriate and somewhat politicized and intentionally hurtful. I have also had to correct a billing mistake that Vanguard Medical made (the Billing department coded it wrongly and therefore charged my insurance company/me with the wrong amount.) Overall, Vanguard is okay compared to unprofessional lowlifes I had to report and complain about (e.g., Mr. Richard A. Newman, Ellen and his other unprofessional dental staff in West Orange; The Dermatology Group in Verona, NJ). The incompetence with the front office and billing staff at Essex County medical offices is horrible. I am a lifelong resident of Verona. I have been a patient of Vanguard Medical and their predecessors for more than 40 years. I always maintained a great relationship with my past personal physicians there. Richard Cirello, MD, was my doctor at the office for many years prior to his retirement a few years ago. I was a member of the Township's Police Department from 1982 through 2007. Richard Cirello was the Township's Doctor, and as such, he would give officers our yearly physical checkups. Over the years, I developed a great relationship with the Doctor and the office staff. Many years ago, as an officer, I responded to Vanguard on a call for medical service. While being examined, a patient's heart had stopped. Myself and another officer, were able to revive the person administering CPR, and use of a police department Automated External Defibrillator. At that time, AED's were not available in the office! The point I am attempting to make here, is that I believed I had a great relationship with Vanguard Medial. That was the case until the summer of 2023. On July 19, 2023 I went to Vanguard Medical. I was extremely lethargic, general malaise, nausea and feeling as though I wasn't getting enough oxygen. I tried to see a doctor, however, none were available. I had to see a 'PA' Physician's Assistant, . Prior to entering the office, I pulled up to the canopy in the rear of the building. While seated in my car, I was swab tested for Covid and Flu. About 15 minutes later I was called on my cell phone and instructed to enter the office via the sick patient entrance. I was examined by Nadira Khan, PA. She told me that the preliminary swab tests were negative. She was unable to diagnose exactly what was going on with me. She told me she was going to give me another swab test, but the results would take a few days. In the meantime, she told me to get plenty of rest, fluids etc. I had pre-paid my insurance co-pay online, and the staff told me I could just leave. I went home, and in a few days was feeling much better. About a month later, I got a surprise in the mail. It was a bill from Quest Diagnostics in the amount of $887.12. I was being billed for the additional swab test that was administered by Nadira Khan, PA in the office. I was shocked! I was never advised that this test would not be covered by my Aetna Insurance. Nor was I advised of the cost of this test. I called Vanguard and was told that they would resubmit a new code to Aetna. A month later I received another bill from Quest Diagnostics in the same amount $887.12. I contacted Quest who stated, there was nothing they could do. It was up to Vanguard and Aetna to resolve my issue. Upon calling Aetna, I was told that payment was denied because of the codes being submitted. Upon appeal to Aetna, my claim was again denied. Aetna stated that the test given was not Medically Necessary, and that a Bulletin had been issued to providers back on June 23, 2023. It is my understanding, that the bulletin advised providers that the particular test in question, ( the test I was given and being charged for) would no longer be covered. I do not find fault with Quest Diagnostics, nor do I find fault with Aetna. I DO find fault with Vanguard Medical! With the exception of resubmitting a code one time, they have done nothing to help resolve this. I called the office at one point, and requested to speak to the office manager. It took two weeks for them to return my call. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the manager that returned the call. It is my opinion that their office has gotten way to busy. They do not have enough Doctors, and they apparently won't hold their Physicians Assistants accountable for their mistakes. They obviously do not care if they lose patients, regardless of the relationship you may believe you have, or had with them. I know that there are still some very good (Real Doctors) Physicians at Vanguard. If you are a patient of Vanguard, I hope you get to see a real doctor when the need arises. Even then, I would question every procedure, test etc., prior to them being done. Be certain you are pre-approved to ensure coverage. Otherwise, you may just get a nice surprise like I did! read more

This place used to be great. It has gone down hill over the last few years. After reading a few reviews, I feel validated in leaving such a poor review. I am not the only one who has to call incessantly in order to JUST make an appointment. One recent time, I called them thirteen times, only to be on hold EVERY time, and never once did I speak to a person. When I finally did secure an appointment (on a separate day), I got the necessary tests done, and waited to hear from them. They left a voicemail, and my subsequent calls to them for clarification went unanswered; to this day, I still don't know if I'm healthy from those tests or not. Very discouraging. This is not to impugn the doctor's professionalism and ability, but rather, their inept and frankly horrible system of PA's who seemingly never encountered a phone in their lives. I've been trying for two days to get a doctor's appointment but just keep getting put on hold. I find it outrageous that a doctor's office could put patients on hold for over an hour (with two phones trying at the same time). The recording you get says "we know you value your time", BS!!!! I was referred to the practice 2 years ago by someone who has been a patient for 25+ years. I had one appointment at that time without incident. However, recently the person who referred me shared her frustration that the practice is overextended, very difficult to contact, and has long wait times once an appointment is scheduled; I now believe she was right. I attempted to contact them today to make an appointment and was on "hold" waiting for someone to pick up the phone for 30 minutes before I hung up. To ensure that there was not a phone issue on my part, I asked a friend to call from a separate number--after 19 minutes, she hung up as well. The hold message that plays on a loop encourages patients to refer others... after listening to it for a half hour, I can't imagine referring anyone to this practice. read more

Monday February 22, 2021 I made an 8PM appointment with Vanguard Medial (recommended by my insurance plan) after having abdominal pain for some time. I was seen by Margaret K. I was examined given an order to get bloodwork and a CT. Wednesday February 25, 2021 I visited Vanguard Medical and had blood drawn at 8AM Thursday February 26, 2021 at 10:23AMand 11:48 AM I received a call from Vanguard to contact Margaret K. I spoke to Margaret K. who advised to go to the ER and get a CT. I was puzzled by this and asked which Hospital? And was there any communication between Vanguard Medical and the Hospital I was to visit. I was advised to just go to any Hospital ER that I wanted. At 12:03PM I called Margaret as I was confused by what she asked me to do and spoke to the receptionist who advised to go to any Hospital ER of my choosing and explain that my Dr wanted me to get a CT. 4:20PM I went to HUM Mountainside in Montclair and checked into the ER. After approx. 2+ hours the ER intake nurse asked me why I was there and took my vitals. After waiting an additional 2+ hours a family member, concerned about my condition, called the Hospital and was told I was discharged. I spoke to the ER receptionist and explained this and was told that I would be one of the next people to be seen and that most likely I would be admitted to the hospital. I waited for a short while longer before leaving. Friday February 27, 2021 I called Vanguard and explained the situation and requested the status of my preauthorization to get a CT. I was advised by the receptionist at Vanguard that a request for pre authorization was submitted to Cigna Insurance and they were waiting on a response from the insurance company. o check on the status or my pre authorization for the CT. 8:17AM I contact Cigna Insurance and spoke to Mehraj I. and was advised that they were waiting for info from Vanguard Medical. I contacted Vanguard Medical several times throughout the afternoon and explained to them that Cigna was still waiting for info from the Vanguard Medical. 1:23PM I contacted Cigna and spoke with John L. who looped me into a three way phone conversation with Linda at Evercor who advised that they were waiting for information from Vanguard Medical and stated that a Peer to Peer was required. I received a call from Vanguard Medical explaining that Margaret K. wanted to schedule me to come into the office on Saturday Feb 28, however, could not explain for what reason other than to say for an examination. I explained that I was just in on the previous Monday for an examination, came in on Wed for a blood test and was only waiting on the pre authorization for my CT. I called Vanguard Medical and spoke to the office Manager (Patty) I explained everything that I was experiencing up to that point. Patty explained to me that coming in on Sat was only a suggestion so that Margaret could take my vitals (this was not explained when I called previously). I explained to Patty that I was just in on the previous Monday for an examination, had blood drawn on Wed and spent the evening on Thursday in an ER waiting room and I did not want to come in to have my vitals taken. Patty explained to me that information was sent to Cigna on that day at 12:35PM and faxed to Evercor (888-693-XXXX) under reference #12XXXXXXX. Monday March 1, 2021 3:32PM I contacted Vanguard Medical at 3:32PM and was advised that they were still waiting for pre authorization from Cigna Tuesday March 2, 2021 8:58AM I received a message from Vanguard Medical explaining that the pre authorization was still under review and Margaret wanted to know how I was feeling. I did not call back as there really in no purpose at this point and decided that my efforts would be better spent dealing directly with Cigna and Evercor. 9:47AM I contacted Cigna and spoke to *Alejandro T. who looped me into a three way call with Marisa L. at Evercor who explained that at 8:35AM on same day they sent another request for information from Vanguard Medical and were awaiting for additional information. Marisa confirmed their fax # as 888-693-XXXX and gave me a phone number of 888-693-XXXX in the event that I needed to contact them direct. Alejandro kept me on hold and contacted Vanguard directly and spoke to "Nijea" who said that they were putting the information through. Wednesday March 3, 2021 4:04PM I received a call from Vanguard Medical (I believe it was Margaret K.) asking me to call them back. Upon calling them back I spoke to the receptionist (Michelle) who advised me that the CT pre authorization was still under review and that Margaret K. now suggests that I come in for an ultrasound. 4:10PM I contacted Cigna and spoke with Josh A. who told me that the CT was not authorized because the attending Dr. did not follow the proper clinical diagnostic protocol of ordering an ultrasound first. Showed up 720, the PA told me I can see the dr but limited to talk only about 1 issue im having since i was late. Is this real life? I mean this is my life and health and they limiting me to one issue. Is that why this Dr went to med school. These big practices give 0 personal attention and they just trying to get through the day. I have hit my limit with this place. They used to be great. Then Towne Medical sold its soul to Vanguard Medical group. All the wonderful caring doctors left leaving in their wake only 3 veteran doctors who are now impossible to get appointments with and a bevy of PA's. My issue isn't so much with the PA's being PA's. My fury is with the fact that this place can't seem to call in a prescription to save their lives. I start calling as many days in advance as I'm allowed bc I KNOW that to get my prescription refilled I will need to call back twice a day every day until it's done. Which is frustrating as I NEED my prescription. And most of the time I am having to go two or three days without bc whomever is supposed to be calling it in can't be BOTHERED to do it. They just don't seem to care that their lack of follow through has consequences for people. The longest i have been without my prescription was 8 days. Plus a weekend. My husband called the doctor on call that weekend (as he had been directed to do by the very nice but massively overworked office ladies) who proceeded to tell him that there wasn't anything she could do about it. when he voiced his frustration and the lack of concern she hung up on him. Wow. The lack of professionalism is astounding. It just didn't used to be this way. Towne Medical was the best. They were fast and efficient and compassionate and extremely pleasant to work with. It's disheartening that my health means so little to the PA's who now staff the place. I realize that doctors are having to hustle harder these days to make a buck. But this is just over the top unacceptable. I will be changing practices going forward. I should not have to start calling a week in advance with literally TWO reminders a day for days to get a prescription refilled. Their lack of interest is unacceptable. And the horrific treatment continues. Spoke to one of the office managers about refilling prescriptions not being filled on a timely basis. That person's response was could you call them in 6 or 7 days in advance so this problem doesn't happen again. I said surely,not a problem. I called in like I was requested to in advance. One was filled and I received a very rude message saying your medication has been filled and you can hear the person slam the phone down. I had another one that could've been filled simultaneously and it was not. I had to call 3 more times and they finally filled it at the last minute. My pharmacy is closed on Sunday. On Monday morning the pharmacist told me that they had to order the medication as they were out of stock thus leaving me without my medication for 4 days. Do you understand that a pharmacy and insurance company WILL NOT put the prescription through earlier than the date on your prescription. That is one reason why they should not wait until the last minute to do their job. We have been very accommodating to Vanguard and there's no reciprocation back from Vanguard at all. They have the nerve to put out a statement saying that they are proud of their team. How can you be proud of treating people poorly and trying to boss or bully your patients. I think hippocratic-oath says to benefit the sick. How can you benefit the sick when a patient comes in for an exam and the doctor stands on the other side of the room and won't touch the patient. Also I think that a doctor should at least know about what Medicare covers and does not cover. I don't expect them to know all insurance companies practices but should know Medicare insurance. I've had to pay for things that you say or think is covered. Thank you for ruining my holiday season and making me anxious and in pain and upset to my stomach. Happy New Year read more

A few years ago I would have given the Verona office and the doctor I see 5 stars. I have been a patient for over 20 years. Many things have changed since they went in this big expansion. A couple of doctors have retired, leaving three veteran doctors very hard to get into, and then a few much, much younger doctors. One if the veteran doctors only sees patients maybe 10 hours a week, because he now works on the management side of things. Then to fill in they have a slew of PAs. So it is fine if you want to see far less experienced doctors or PAs. No longer fine for me. I have had mixed experiences with the staff over the years. This practice is illegally billing insurances and patients. First time patient gets billed 3 different CPT codes one New Patient 99204 , Initial Comprehensive Preventive Medicine Evaluation 99385 and Office or other outpatient visit for evaluation and management of an established patient 99213 . Then there was the diagnosis code that were never diagnosed by this practice or Dr . So you go to see Dr Little for the first time she spends no more than 15 minutes and decides that you are not only a new patient , but established and she's evaluating you managing you. oh then there was the diagnosis which was anemia ( without blood work ) Ehlers Danlos with zero genetic testing and wrist pain. This practice needs to be audited and I will make sure it is and will do everything in my power to make sure the Attorney General office investigates their billing practices and will request the Insurance investigate. I've been with Vanguard since it was Town Medical for a couple decades now. The medical care has been good. But the prescription refill service has pushed me past my breaking point. Several times this year, I've had to make multiple calls (speaking to a person each time) on subsequent days to request my prescription before it finally got done. I've been told multiple times that there was no record of my first attempt when I called 2 days later for a second attempt. He is Truly what when I think of The Title "Dr" IS & Then some. As Busy as He is & as Complicated of a Patient I am, He is Always There for Me when I need Him. Every single month He sees Me for 45mins to an Hr & Doesn't Charge My insurance or Myself for All of His Very Precious Time, He does it out of his heart ,He is Truly The Best Dr I've ever been treated and cared for with such True Concern for Myself & All His patients. Dr. Mazzella even took Courses so He could have The Extra Proper Credentials to administer A Pain Medication, Who does that, & For Only 1 patient? I Must comment on Vanguard Medical as a Whole Unit Now. Seeing the transformation from Town Medical to Vanguard Medical has Really been a Great, Positive Achievement! There is now an Entire other level, Double the Labs, Specialists are now there as well if you Need one. The Staff are Phenomenal. They take such Great Care of Me whenever I need them. They also go out of their way for Me, getting All of my Meds that Need a Pre Authorization approved (That takes A lot of time) dealing w My Insurance Company & getting Me scheduled Every month, Getting me Fit in to see Dr Mazzella in an Emergency, The way that they speak to Me is Always with such Empathy & patience. I've seen some other Negative posts on Vanguard & What I will say Regarding that is The Person who posted must have been having a Bad day, or maybe they don't realize Exactly the True Level of Patience, Care & Professionalism given by Not Only The Drs, But Also The ENTIRE STAFF, Yes, Even Those who work Behind the Scenes, such as Billing, & they're NOT Noticed for a Reason, They're Extremely Great at their jobs, If They Weren't, Then You'd Know Them.
