I had the worst haircut of my life from one stylist who was coloring and highlighting my hair for months. I was so upset. The second attempt by her just made it worse. When I called to talk to someone about my experience and issue, they went above and beyond to make things right. The educator, Melissa, was sympathetic and understanding and did her very best. While my hair has to grow out a long way to return to where I was before the bad haircut, she added highlights to where they were hacked off and did it at no charge. Melissa will also cut my hair again in 8 weeks, also at no charge, and I was given a gift card in the amount of the first haircut. I really should have listened to the reviews but I thought because they had the products I use, it would be better. First, everyone was friendly. This was my first time in the salon as I just moved into the area. 1) Kevin Murphy products are super expensive here. More so than any other salon I have been to. 2) I left the salon with my hair looking worse than when I came in. I had a "Malibu" treatment to remove residue. It dried my hair out pretty badly. It's been fuzzy ever since. I have naturally wavy hair. The cut I got is not good for me. I wasn't asked if I wanted it, it was just cut that way. My hair is super hard to do now and it does not lay right. The hair color (even though I asked for all over color) was only done on the top of my head. So now the bottom of my hair feels really dry, rough and the top is less fuzzy. So my hair is two different textures. My hair is flipping up on the ends and it looks damaged. It did not look that way before. 3) I was never consulted on the hair color to use. My hair is dark brown although a color that is more black was used. Once again, two tone hair. Dark brown and black on top. This salon is not cheap. It actually cost more than the one I went to in Indy (before I moved). So, lesson learned. Just an FYI don't get hair coloring from Vanis Salon in Valpo. I went in for a simple balayage highlight. My original appointment was for 845 I got there at 8:30. Ultimately did not get home until 6:30 pm. The first time the girl did my hair she made it worse than what I came in there and didn't add an even amount of color to both sides. So she re_did it. By the time she re-did it the time was around 1:30. I left still unhappy as we did the consultation I showed her what I ideally liked and my old pics. She still haven't gave me what I thought I was paying for. I didn't see the back of my hair before I left big mistake. I went onto Dunkin donuts for my coffee and took a pic for the back of my hair and noticed that they had a chunk of blonde in the back. Horrible. How do you stand thier and let your client walk out like that. On top of when she toned my hair I had ro lay in the sink 2 separate times due to her re-doing my hair I layed thier wet hair cold in pain. Then when blow drying my hair the heat was in my face. So uncomfortable. My make up from left eye rubbed off. I decided to call the manager after seeing the back of my hair. Came back at 2:30 and got my hsir done until 5:40. Still not what I pictured and not Worth the money at all. I REALLY need a refund back for the trouble I went through. read more

I would not recommend nail services here. I went in for a no chip manicure and the experience was not good. It took the technician almost two hours to do the manicure, they charged me $40 for the gel manicure and another $10 to remove the gel polish I already had on my nails. I have NEVER had a salon charge me to remove polish if I was getting a new polish. The technician did not soak my nails at all, just went after my cuticles dry resulting in ragged results. The no chip polish which typically lasts me a minimum of two weeks without chipping lasted only 2 days....so basically I paid $60 with a tip for the worst manicure I have ever had. read more

I had gone to Vanis for around 4 years and loved it, so I decided to try getting balayage there as well. In the 3ish years I went for coloring services, I left happy once. In my experiences, the price paid for services never matched the quality of the service. On my last visit to Vanis, I asked the stylist if it would be possible to get a cool, ashy balayage color since I have dark hair, and if she didn't think the color would take, I'd leave it alone. The stylist reassured me and said yes, since I had already been getting blonde for a few years. After paying 200+ for the balayage, it was basically the exact shade I had started with. The stylist even posted a picture of my hair, saying love the warm balayage (although I asked for cool tones). I haven't been back to Vanis since and don't plan on ever returning, since there are plenty of other salons in the area that provide great services. read more

I have never had an issue with my hair here and I actually go out of my way to go to Vanis when I'm in town. The issue is the front desk staff who has worked there quite a long time and act as if they are in a posh salon in the SoHo district of NYC. They are rude and each time I go my salon experience is marred by their attitude- both the older blonde woman who has been there for years and the younger man with glasses in addition to the others. Who wants to loathe the entry and exit from a business? The art work has been driving me and just about every other person who works there nuts for years. It's right across from the sinks and is horribly ugly. It doesn't go with the vibe of the salon and stresses me out every time I go there. Regardless of who painted it it's WAY past time to take it down. I've had a mani/pedi there once and never went back for the service again. It was awful. I also HIGHLY dislike that you can't tip on the credit card. Because I don't live in town and travel around the country I normally don't carry cash as my bank isn't always conveniently located. I've given my business to this place on and off for 12 years but at this point I'm so annoyed over the cash requirement for tipping that I will not be back. I'm only 31- so that's a good 20-30 years of business down the drain on their part because the owner is too frugal to allow tipping on a card. Next time I am in town I will go out of my way to find a new location. From what I hear there is a lot more competition in the town now and I'm sure I'll find another salon to give my business to. read more

My one visit there I got a haircut. It was okay. But the noise volume there is awful. Probably the noisiest salon I've been to! I would rather be in a more relaxed calming atmosphere. I wanted to treat myself to something really nice for the first time in my life. I went here, got my hair trimed, lightened, dyed at the bottom, washed, and styled. Bought shampoo and conditioner. And it was $500.00 ........ ............. ............ THEN MY HAIR THINNED DRASTICALLY!!! It has been a year and a half and my hair never grew back... I was very disappointed in my "spa" experience here. I went for a pedicure and it was pretty blah. The woman who did it started complaining about her back and how many more pedicures she had to do as I was getting settled in to my chair. She gossiped with the technician next to her the whole time and hardly spoke to me. It was way too fast and she did not even give me a foot massage... when I saw the price I was appalled at what I got for that price. I am Arab from Lebanon so my hair is this very odd mix of coarse and curly. It makes finding someone who can cut my hair quite difficult so I called this place and was told Brittany would be able to help me. I'm a guy so salons aren't necessarily my thing but I wanted to keep my long hair so I gave it a shot. It's hair, worse case I grow it back right? Well, she did a phenomenal job! I was extremely happy and only get happier every day after it! She did such a wonderful job and the massage, wash, and advice on how to take care of my hair was very much appreciated! I have been going to Vanis on and off most of my life. I'm 30 now so I'd say the better part of 15 years. I moved to Valpo so now go to the Valpo salon and love it. I love Jordyn...she can always squeeze me in if I am in dire need and she does an excellent job. I also get my brows waxed here. I have a stubborn brow and they always know not to mess with it too much. I love this place. I'm sad to see so many people don't like them. I have never had an issue with the front door staff either. Vanis has unexpectedly shut down their whole nail department! Imagine how shocking it was to get a call and be told that my nail technician was no longer there. Especially when I have been going to her for over 15 years. No warning... nothing!! I was scrambling to figure out where she went. I was eventually able to locate her so that I could get my nails done again when they were due. Very very upsetting and shocking, especially for a high-end salon like this. Both of the girls had been there for over 15 years. They were amazing nail technicians. I gave up doing my nails on my travels because nobody was as good as they were. I'm sure they were shocked to be out of a job as well with very little notice. I'm sure this decision was not motivated by anything else other than profits and greed. Nobody was ever giving the customer or the nail technicians another thought!! I have been a patron of Vanis for over 15 years. I spend a huge amount of money there every month on haircuts and color, eyelash extensions and my nails. Besides other services. I brought my 14 year old daughter in for an appointment for a highlight . I got a bad vibe from the stylist in the beginning when she rudely told me I couldn't sit by my daughter I'd have to go to the back I understand that but this was my daughters first time with her getting her hair done we had never been there before. We showed her a picture and basically told her we want the same highlights that she has it was a bright blonde she left there with an ash dull color of hair with some white-ish highlights.The only reason I would've wanted to be around was to make sure we were on the same page . I would walk out to see my daughter but she was nowhere in sight the stylist never came and told me she'd be back in some other room processing . I thought because of the reputation everything would be fine for a simple highlight I was in shock when they told me my bill was $397 she bought a product but I gave a $20 tip that is utterly ridiculous! It was not even a full highlight and she blew dry it straight I didn't say anything at the time I'm just not that kind of person I don't like confrontation I didn't want to upset my daughter the stylist did ask me if I wanted a quote I said no that was OK I had no idea that it would be over $200 maybe 250 max for a partial highlightI will never set foot in that place again $397 for a partial highlight read more

I usually go to State of Mind in Crown Point. But thought I would give this place a try since it is closer and they call themselves a "Spa". Got a Pedi/mani spa and was very disappointed. The "spa" seats you sit in for the pedicure and manicure were very uncomfortable. The gal upsold me to get a gel set. They are chipping after 3 days, and it is such a hassle to get in to get them fixed. However the front desk staff were super sweet and friendly. They gave me a small thank you bag for coming in and they were very professional. Will not recommend this place or go back. If I pay spa pricing I expect spa quality and that simply did not happen. read more

The receptionist was not accommodating when her initial suggested time did not work out for me. She also seemed extremely distracted on the phone, especially when she hung up on me without saying good bye. I've been going to Vanis for about a year and Brittany is my stylist. I have no complaints - I'm not really great at styling my own hair and she has taken a lot of time to help me understand different blow dry techniques to get more volume in my fine hair and also other styling tips. I've never felt pressured to buy product like you do in other salons. I don't agree that the front desk staff is rude...but I wouldn't say they're exactly welcoming. The layout of the salon is also a bit odd so it doesn't really have the space to offer a welcoming waiting area, which I think can add to the issue for some people - the minute you walk in you're either forced to stand around or squeeze on to a little bench with someone else. I find this salon to have pros and cons just like any other place. First, when I walked in the door, I did get greeted and I sat down to wait. There was a younger blonde girl that used language and said stories to another younger blonde girl at the desk, that I do not think that they knew I could hear. Which I am not sure how because the one girl was very loud about everything she said. She seemed to slouch over and have no care really for clients who are paying to keep her employed. The other blonde girl seemed to constantly have her phone out and seemed very rude when customers tried to come in concerned about returning items. I am guessing that she is the manager based on the fact that she was handling this return. I do not know for sure. I personally was so angry after leaving, not because of my hair but due to the fact that I had to deal with these two girls at the front desk. I feel that they are completely unprofessional and extremely rude. There was a total of 4 people working that day. There was the 2 blondes, a guy, and the brunette girl. I think the brunette was leaving while I was waiting though. The girls seemed to be slacking off (not the brunette, she was staying busy and working) but the other two girls need to learn how to spend time working when they are at work and less about their drama in their live and who they went home with on a random night. The guy was working from what I can tell, extremely hard. He was doing what I would expect from people at the front desk. I really wish I knew all of their names so I could tell everyone who to avoid and who you want to talk to when you are there or calling in. They will get you, your appointment but depending on who you talk to you may have to deal with attitude and a very fake personality. I would not be surprised if the front desk blondes continued to work and mess things up. I am very disappointed in this salon for giving these two girls a job. They seem to lack the personality traits and respect for clients. I will not return here. I may consider returning if it meant that the 2 blondes had been removed or demoted from their positions, especially the girl who I believed to be the manager.
