He was verbally attacked by Charles Dickens who described him as a fanatic who didn't want those poorer than himself to have any pleasure in life. However, the Dictionary of National Biography writes of Agnew's genial and kindly nature. There's a small free parking area off to the side of the road where you can follow a path through long grass and wild flowers. It continues up past stones which were once part of the ancient hillfort. As the path begins to climb more steeply there are some stone steps here and there in the grass. Eventually you come to the top of the hill and the monument, which is a very striking sight. It's also worth the climb for the marvellous views across Loch Ryan on a clear day. I was lucky enough to have a lovely sunny day for my visit last week. I also enjoyed seeing all the wild flowers and the place was full of wildlife, especially bees, butterflies and grasshoppers.

I'm reviewing the estate grounds however which is part of the route of the Doon Valley Path. There is a small car parking area just outside the side entrance to the estate at a junction in the road on A713. From where you walk in and join the public footpath, a map of which can be found within the grounds. I'll add a photo of the map for convenience. I think its signposted as private but don't worry, its OK as long as you're respectful. There are private homes within the estate as well as the main house. The path is popular with dogwalkers. The walk is a loop and you can take whichever direction you prefer. We did the clockwise route which I think works best. Bits of the path are steep, and some areas can be a bit muddy especially the part along the river Doon, though obviously it depends on the season and weather. Lots of wildlife to be spotted along the route, including deer if you're very lucky! Its a modest size walk and pretty easy going if you're wearing stout footwear or wellies. Couple of nice pubs nearby to quench your thirst afterwards.

Really disappointed in this shop. Had a long scarf that was too long and far too wide. Asked for…read morethe scarf to be shortened and halved in breadth. Once home I discovered that the scarves length was fine and the bottom of the new length had been finished nicely BUT the width had simply been halved by cutting with scissors and the seam down the length of the scarf not finished off. Already it is starting to fray. This cost me £10 to be given back a scarf that has been spoiled. Poor show AND service was given without a smile and barely a word spoken. Will not use again.

Faced with the urgent need to get a pair of mens suit trousers altered I gave Stitch in Time a try…read more For the very reasonable sum of £7 they tailored the waistband to the perfect size and did an excellent job. In less than three hours the trousers were tried-on, pinned to the correct new size, professionally altered and ready to collect. I've never tried this kind of service before and was a little nervous. I needn't have worried. Stitch in Time was a revelation. Highly recommended. They do all sorts of tailoring and alterations, even make up curtains from scratch. I've added a couple of photos that list what they do and the 2016 prices.

The homestart volunteers have been an amazing lifeline, and the group is amazing too. The groups are fab as they are a great place to meet other mums and dads, lots of craft and activity ideas for your kids, we often do some of the same activities at home with the other children. The groups always encourage the children to try various healthy eating foods, and there is always someone to chat to and often the other mums etc have valuable parenting tips and shared experiences. Homestart Wigtownshire have great trips and activities out as well, and the Christmas party is always sooo much fun! So if you are considering homestart, id say go for it. I was a bit shy at first but can say look forwards to the group play and meet sessions (Tweenies) and now consider the homestart ladies as very genuine, welcoming friends :)
