Trails with Redwoods, yoga studio. Cafe with coffee and gift shop. Massage and herbalist on site. Magical place and beautiful! Dorms, single rooms, camping too. They have it all. Need to rejuvenate and take time for yourself. Check out Mount Madonna Center. Temple is also a place to quiet your mind and find the blessings in your life. Hot tub is on site. Deer wander around in the fields nearby. Vegetarian food served from their community kitchen. Classes are available to learn or experience new teachings. Much better than that place that claims to be the happiest place on earth.

That means it had a lovely view of the grounds and skyline. I felt like I was at home and the grounds were very quiet as no groups were visiting - apparently this is rare. My main reason for visiting was to spend time at the Hanuman temple and take part in Aarti, which I did. The experience was altogether magical. On my third visit, I was placed in a very hot, boxed in room on the ground floor - windows on one side, a foot from a rock wall. It was an echo-chamber, meaning the three people talking loudly outside the front doors transformed my room into a stadium. I was desperate for sleep, so the combination was brutal. I was told that this is the room you are defaulted to, even if nicer rooms in the same class are available. I wish I understood why. Luckily, reservations/guest services are some of the kindest people - Quincy swapped out my keys for something quieter. I was exhausted and looking forward to sleep, but first to worship at the Hanuman Temple. When I arrived, I was surprised to find a couple of residents sitting next to it, having a business meeting. I understand many people (including residents) don't have a reverence for Hanuman or the temple in the same way devotees do, but this was certainly disappointing and made it difficult to meditate and worship in silence. I had just driven 6.5 hours, after a night of no sleep, but knew I'd find solace if I could make it to the temple. I mentioned something to a resident working the grounds around the temple (asking when said meeting would be done) and he let me know that there are always a lot of people on the grounds "here for yoga" and that it was rarely quiet, even at the temple (despite the signs asking for quiet). He then suggested I step into the forest if I needed quiet. He wasn't very sympathetic and I heard him yell to the guys something snarky about me giving them feedback. If you want to gather and worship loudly, please be my guest (Kirtan is wonderful here), but having a business meeting right next to the Hanuman muirti is unnecessary, and being patronized for caring enough to say something was about as bad as being filmed whilst standing in line to get food, again while at the buffet and throughout dinner. Please make it possible for guests to not be part of promotional shoots when you are doing them. This was such a bizarre visit. Kirtan was the saving grace. I wish the business that ran retreats was separate from the temple, or more in alignment. These are two very different worlds.

Moreover I've struggled with obesity most of my life. Carolyn has helped me tremendously over the past five months via one-hour weekly sessions in her yoga / fitness studio. To begin with she recommended an excellent weight-loss program (The Healthy Way in Santa Cruz) which has guided me into losing over 50 lbs -- I am now no longer obese. Due to my physical disability and the later spinal fractures, since childhood I have never been exposed to even moderate physical activity. Carolyn took my history into account and over five months taught me how to do daily streching excercise using a yoga mat, a chair, a ball, a foot massage roller, a foam roller, yoga blocks and straps and especially some TRX susepended-strap techniques. And I really like using the large exercise ball. The stretching and fitness program began with gentle stretches on the yoga mat, and on a chair as well as standing. At home I continued to do the daily exercises. Each weekly session with Carolyn introduced more complex and more vigourous streching and movement. As the weeks and months went by I steadily grew more flexible, more fit and feeling much better. After five months with Carolyn I have developed the habit of daily stretching and fitness excerise, including mild aerobics and daily walks including climbing up and down the steps to the beach. I now am ending the lessons, feeling better than ever and knowing I will continue the fitness program on my own.
