A couple of years ago, I was going to Brazil. Asked VBH to make some of the arrangements. (1) They booked me for a room in a hotel in Rio de Janeiro the day before I arrived although I shared my flight information with VHB (the flight arrangements were made by the organization that invited me to their annual conference in Porto Alegre). I thus paid for a night I didn't need. (2) Another problem was that VHB farmed out to a Canadian travel agency some of the bookings; I only found out when I checked the fine print of a document--I wish VBH would have told me that Brazil was not their specialty or that they were leaning on another agency. I believe in transparency. (3) I had to pay some fees upfront. When I checked with friends who do a lot of more traveling than I do, they told me that their agency does not charge such fees but books their hotels at a rates travel agencies get from management. The agencies charge the customer the regular hotel rate. The difference is the agency's commission, which is appropriate, given the work the agencies do. I didn't understand the extra fees VHB charged me. Were those fees to hunt for another agency that specializes in Brazil? I used to do all my travel bookings myself. And that was fine. I finally gave in and decided to use a travel agency, in this case VHB, to take the job out of my hands. But VHB disappointed me. I will not use them again. I may seek another travel agency or return to being a do-it-yourselfer when making travel plans. read more

More like "Nightmares by Heather". Our initial consultation went very well. Despite reading some of the negative reviews, we decided to move forward and have Heather assist us with our vacation planning. She sent us an invoice for $250 (deposit fee) which I paid right away. And then.....radio silence. We were told over the phone, and it clearly states on her website that she would send us different options based on our budget WITHIN 2-5 DAYS. A week goes by and we still haven't heard from her. Now we're starting to get nervous. My partner shoots her an email, and here's how she responded. "Thanks for checking in. I will email you in the next day or so." 4 business days goes by, and we send her another email, no response. By Friday afternoon we had it with her. I called her business line and her assistant, Kelly answers the phone. She lets me know that Heather is on vacation and has no internet service. Kelly lets me know that she has access to Heather's emails and sees that we've been trying to reach her. Wait...what??? As her assistant she didn't think to let us know that Heather is on vacation and has no internet access?!?! No accountability whatsoever. I informed her that we want the deposit back asap. Magically, within 30 minutes, Heather finally had internet service!! No coincidence, of course. She scrambled to throw a rushed itinerary together with the wrong vacation dates. The entire ordeal felt like the biggest slap in the face. No phone call, no accountability on her part. We wasted two weeks on her hoping she would pull through. Had she told us from the start "I'm going on vacation and I won't be able to have your itinerary ready for a couple of weeks" would've been totally okay. She chose the deceitful route by taking our deposit and going MIA. I don't believe for a second that she didn't have internet access. She simple used that as an excuse. Please look elsewhere. There are many other reputable travel agencies that truly understand the meaning of great customer service. I just want to add that she did return the deposit. I am confident that she will respond to this review and once again, take no accountability for her actions. Message me if you want email proof. read more

Just returned from week in Madrid and Barcelona. Complicated trip, lots of transfers and tours. Heather and her staff did a terrific job in all the arrangements and assisting us when we had unforeseen problems. We had a wonderful time, walked between three - five miles a day, and took some fascinating tours in both cities. In addition to hard copies of our arrangements which VBH sent us, we had all the details on a Trip app. We are a 75+ couple and were a bit apprehensive but VBH worked with us, even when we made last minute changes. My daughter was moving to NY and my other daughter and I were going to spend a week moving her in and doing some sightseeing. I called Heather because of her great reviews. I told her what was on our bucket list and asked her to set up tours and a hotel. It was my first time visiting NYC. I was disappointed in Heather because she did the minimum. She only booked what I asked her to do. I could have done that myself. She did not offer any ideas of where to go , what to see , what's a great little place in Brooklyn etc etc. if I sent an email asking her a question, it would take several days for her to respond , and she wouldn't give alternative ideas. We received more info from the tour guide on our bike tour than we did from Heather. So basically, I could have gone on Trip Advisor, booked the top rated hotel and tours and saved some money. I was hoping she would give us some great ideas and some insider tips. Didn't really get that. We frequently use travel agents because we feel they offer value for our money. Heather was a god send and was amazing to work with. I normally do all the research, booking etc and it is so much work.. She made this last minute vacation to Alaska such a breeze to book. Right from the beginning from finding the right cruises, room availability, flights to excursion planning, printed out tickets and itinerary and the travel packs everything was awesome. The 'Trip Plans' app and the ease of finding all paperwork, information, contacts etc. was the best though. Changing the excursion time at 1 of the port (due to late arrival of cruise) was handled by her as well, she made it so I could enjoy the vacation as well (than stress out, which I normally would have). I reached out to Heather bc I promised my gf a trip to Paris this spring. Heather had me fill out a form to do a phone interview on Friday. On the following Tuesday, I reached out to heather stating I hadn't received anything from her. She immediately replied I hadn't paid a deposit yet and asked if she should re-send it. This was the first time I've ever used a travel agent to plan and book a trip, and I only wish I'd done it sooner! I had an initial call with Heather and Holly to explain to them what I was looking for in a family vacation, and a few days later they sent me a curated list of options, fully priced out including airfare, rooms, and airport transportation, and with detailed information about what each resort was like based on their personal experience. All of the options fit my criteria but one especially stood out. We booked that one and it was exactly what we wanted. I feel confident I would not have discovered this option on my own. Our trip was amazing! Out of curiosity, I priced out what it would have cost me to book the trip without using Vacations By Heather, and I was able to see that they got significantly better rates than I would have gotten on my own. They must have access to special deals! They also got us a significant room upgrade, which was a nice surprise when we arrived at the resort. Also helpful, before we left for our trip we received a detailed itinerary for what to expect and explaining what documents and information we'd need to have ready (it was an international trip). Everything went so smoothly. If you are someone who spends hours trying to plan a perfect vacation for your family, save yourself the time and hassle and use Vacations By Heather. DO NOT USE!!! We had our complimentary conversation with Heather on July 4th to discuss where we wanted to go and what our goals were. We explained we wanted to go to Portugal in two months and we wanted to catch an evening flight on 9/17 instead of 9/18 so we could get an extra day. We told her we didn't want to do tourist type things, but wanted to explore local delights and drinks. Heather explained that if we wanted to move forward; we would have to pay the $250 fee. We received and paid the invoice the same day; July 6th. Her associate, Kelly, emailed us the same day to confirm payment. Then radio silence. I waited five days, July 11th, then had to reach out to Heather. Then she passively aggressively responded by saying thanking us for checking in. She should be checking in with us, not the other way around. Another four days, July 15th, and no response! My girlfriend had to call the office and Explained to Kelly that we were upset that we paid 10 days ago and have not received an itinerary! Kelly told her to "calm down" and that she had seen our emails. We are paying customers with concerns about not being able to book this trip in time. Kelly tells my girlfriend Heather is on vacation. Why wouldn't Heather tell us that beforehand? It would have been fine if she said "Hey there might be a delay, I'll be on vacation." Or " sorry I'm too busy to book your trip." All of a sudden Heather e-mails saying that there was poor reception and that she was frustrated. Excuse me; paying customers have been frustrated for 10 days! She also is saying that my partner doesn't want to work with her; no she was trying to just get In touch with you and express our frustrations. Then she passively aggressively suggests we shouldn't work with her if we don't want to. Terrible approach, but she did refund the $250 fee. And was it a coincidence that her reception got better when we called and complained? I decided to give her another chance and see what she has to offer. She gave us the wrong fly out date; which was important to us and gave us a quickly put together itinerary. I told her to update the itinerary with the correct flight and she then resends one over budget! Blowing the entire budget on flights and hotel. All the activities were add ons and were tourist traps; specifically what we wanted to avoid. I could have put together this itinerary and have had everything booked. She obviously doesn't care. I even emailed her telling her that due to her lack of communication I was worried that if something went wrong while we were over seas we wouldn't be able to get in touch with her. Honesty, transparency, and communication is key in a professional relationship; all things were thrown away. She did not communicate, she did not care, and she wasted almost two weeks of our time! Our experience with Vacations by Heather was very different than those of the other reviewers. My wife and I were excited by the many positive reviews. We're planning a trip to Italy this fall and wanted help with the arrangements. I first wrote to Heather on January 1 to set up a phone consultation. Her consultation times are mornings on Monday through Friday until around noon. Hoping my wife could be involved, I asked whether it would be possible to schedule an appointment after 1:00 on a Friday, when she gets off work, or on the weekend. We received no response. Thinking that perhaps she was away for the holidays, I waited a number of days and wrote again via her contact form. We received no response. A few days later, I wrote a last note on her contact form, expressing disappointment we had not heard from her and mentioning that, had alternate hours for a consultation been a problem, I would have spoken with her alone. We received no response for a third time. A friend then recommended a travel consultant he used. We spoke with her by phone, and within days had our trip fully laid out--hotels, trains, transfers, advance bookings at historic sites; everything requested and within our price range. I have no idea why three attempts to contact Heather went unanswered, but I consider a failure to respond both inconsiderate and unprofessional. I would never recommend working with someone who treats potential customers in this manner. read more

It has been an awful experience working with Heather. I hired her to book a ski trip for my family in September and was promised then she would take care of all the details, including booking us for lessons. One month before the trip, after paying the amount in full, she told me I had to book the lessons myself and when I went to do this they were completely booked after she said she would take care of it 5 months earlier. I had to cancel the trip because she couldn't get lessons and my kids are in tears. Now it's a nightmare to try to get my money refunded for the trip. We are part of the Heather fan club. She did such a good job helping to plan a "Big Birthday" trip for me and the entire family in Mexico. We went to exactly the right place for the three generations, and the celebration was a complete success. Now, she's topped that. My spouse and I are just back from a fabulous trip to Costa Rica.
