They also give tax refund if you spend over certain amounts, so make sure to ask and have your passport number ready! I normally don't take my passport around, but another option is to take a photo of the passport instead. Unfortunately, no public bathroom here! I've attached a map of where the store is located. The masks enchanted me and we had to go back. I was so thrilled when we found it again. I didn't plan on buying a mask but the animal masks were way too cool to pass up. I ended up bringing home a scorpion that is on my wall but will also come down for a Halloween party this year. The clerk was one of the mask makers and talked about the trade and the craft. This is the place that even made the masks for the film Eyes Wide Shut. I am not in to the cheezy typical masks you find all over Venice. These are a far cry from that. If nothing else stop in and check out these amazing wearable works of art.

Bringing home a special mask was something at the top of our wish list. After a 1/2 day of seeing many repetitive designs (and a definite overuse of glitter,) we decided we needed to seek out a unique mask shop, if one in fact existed, rather than looking for something special amongst the multitude of souvenirs, all with "Venezia" written on the face, but probably "Made in China" on the back. While wandering the quaint, narrow streets near our hotel and the Rialto Bridge, we came upon a gem of a store! Rugadoro's windows and store are filled with lovingly and artistically designed, unique masks. Wow! They are beautiful! Now, our task was to look through the selection of individually handcrafted masks. All are created with rich fabrics, many with colorful feathers, and Murano glass millifiore. The talented artist, Sarah Zanarella, who created each and every one of these masks, obviously with love, somehow finds time to own and run her mask shop. She is available to explain her creations and is happy to discuss the craft of maskmaking with those who want to know. If you want something handmade and unique, do yourself a favor and visit this shop, in the San Polo district of Venice.
