The volunteers gave us what felt like a private tour, sharing not only the history of the station but also fascinating stories about Ocean City itself. We loved learning how the shoreline once came right up to the station, how the surfmen lived and worked, and how the station was brought back into service during World War II because of U-boats. The realistic mannequins, original equipment, and period rooms make it easy to imagine life there over a century ago. Best of all, admission is free, and it's clear the volunteers put their hearts into preserving this history. If you're visiting Ocean City, don't make the mistake we did and keep walking past it. It's absolutely worth a visit.

The historic life saving station in the north end of Ocean City is a pleasant journey into a bit of maritime history. You can still see some of the old life boats which were used in rescue attempts of people imperiled in and on the sea. The original kitchen and bedrooms are still here which were used by the men and women who worked at this facility and saved many a life over the years. Interesting enough - at one time this life saving station was directly on the beach and ocean but the years have shifted the sands and now it is a very long block inland from the water. I've never really exploited the rest of the city so this review is mostly from the boardwalks perspective. Not a lot has changed since I remember and that's a good thing. Plenty to do right off the boardwalk and there are plenty of hotels as well. It's a long walk from end to end of the boardwalk but it's a nice to do on a nice day. There's a trolley too(you have to pay) that can take you up and down the boardwalk as well. Great place to visit anytime of the year.

I grew up on a 400-tree holly orchard, so when I heard about the Shoemaker holly, I was all over…read moreit. My grandfather planted the orchard by hand in the 60s and 70s, as a (then) future retirement project, and in the late 80s my parents bought it from him. I began helping work on the trees at age eight, so I am pretty familiar with hollies. The Shoemaker holly is not what I expected. Hollies take much of a conical or spearmint leaf shape, and typically their branches grow all the way to the ground, especially if grown in a field as opposed to competing for sunlight in a forest. NJ wild hollies do tend to climb for sun, gaining more height than fullness, making them gangly looking, and branches can tend to be distortedly curved as opposed to just reaching out on all sides, like a person holding arms out to stretch. Like wild hollies, the Shoemaker holly is bare at the base of its trunk (much more bare than its field surroundings would normally yield), and its branches are kind of pent up, like it's been wedged between city buildings all its life. But heck for 325 years old, it's a lot prettier than I'd be, and the oddness of it gives it charm. And I am sure it's been pruned, and helped along by tree surgeons throughout its life. There have also been blights that have come through the region, and plagues of holly pests, which I remember coming in relentless waves in the 90s/early 00s. So, this tree has survived a lot, and it's standing tall and proud along the NJ Turnpike for all to see. The tree is located in the picnic rest stop area, with plenty of parking, picnic benches, trash cans, and a little path into the woods. The old tree is marked with a sign, and you can drive up to it along a driveway past the parking area. There used to be bathrooms at this picnic area, but they were demolished in 2014.

It cost money so make sure you have E-ZPass or Change 75 cents to be exact. 3 of the tolls are 75 cents and the others are I believe $2! Don't quote me just bring plenty of change and cash. There are a lot of speed traps and there also a state police barracks halfway down the expressway so tread carefully. It seems like you can do 75-99 but they are lurking and waiting to get happy speeders unaware! My brother has been pulled over several times in the last few months because that's the way he drives to work. I've fortunately never been pulled over on the expressway. Drive carefully and you'll get to your destination soon enough.

When I was going from New Jersey to Delaware I decided to take the scenic route. This causeway is actually called the Howard S. Stainton Memorial Causeway. Connecting Ocean City to Somers Point, this causeway takes State Route 52 over the water. While on the drive over the causeway you get some great views. Ironically, when the original causeway opened it was a toll road on its own. Then the state of New Jersey bought it and that changed. They also replace the original with a four lane bridge. This takes you over Great Egg Harbor Bay. Just another place you probably wouldn't notice otherwise and take for granted.
