My first time visiting the lighthouse. It's one of the oldest if not the oldest buildings in AC. It's a cool place to visit. There's a small parking lot which I was able to find a spot but is also about half a dozen spots. The light house is on a big property and there's some stuff to see before you go to the main building. A small building with some information inside. The building has a small store and activity area and restrooms as well. We were greet right away and you only pay if you want to go up to the top of the lighthouse. I ended up doing that and it was a hike. There are stations along the way or rest stops if you need them. There's a window at every stop and each stop faces a different direction. There's also pamphlets at each window with information and history. Once you reach the top it's a nice view and there are bars so you can walk around the top of the lighthouse. There was also a gentleman up there that gave you a "made it to the top" card and he was very knowledgeable if you had any questions. Awesome place to visit. read more

Took today to seek out a few places in Atlantic City of historic importance. The area around this old lighthouse is not nice but the ocean is across the street. The lighthouse has a staircase that can be walked up to the top for around fee but I was ok with checking out the grounds. The Absecon Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse that opened in Atlantic City, New Jersey in January 1857. After a decade of prompting from Jonathan Pitney, considered by most to be the "father" of Atlantic City, the U.S. Lighthouse Service requested and received a $35,000 appropriation from Congress for a lighthouse on Absecon Island. Construction on the lighthouse began in 1854. The lighthouse was designed by George Meade, who constructed lighthouses for the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers throughout the 1850s. He later rose to the rank of Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1933 and, although the light still shines every night, it is no longer an active navigational aid. Absecon Lighthouse still retains its original first-order fixed Fresnel lens, which is made of lead glass and weighs 12,800 pounds. American photographer Jack E. Boucher conceived and oversaw the preservation of the lighthouse in 1964. A re-creation of the keepers' quarters was opened in 2002. My family and I visited Absecon Lighthouse this past summer while we were on a road trip. We were looking for things to do and heard that the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey was just a few blocks away from our hotel. Although the surrounding areas are all developed, the grounds at the lighthouse have been restored and resemble the way that they looked in the mid-18th century. We had fun exploring the museum in the recreated keepers' quarters. Exhibits include ocean life, shipwrecks, keepers and lighthouse history, local memorabilia, and restoration photos. Very kind and welcoming staff. When we reached the top there was a lady who told us so many fun facts about the lighthouse. She has been working there for 20 years and was very passionate! We were planning to go to the beach but it was a rainy day. We were having bad luck/service at other attractions, but spending jt at the Absecon Lighthouse was a great way to end the day. I got here shortly after 4 o'clock, which was perfect because the last climb starts at 4:30. I entered after paying the admission fee. There are a lot of steps, I'll tell you that much. Fortunately, it was a calm Monday afternoon and I didn't have to worry about kids and elderly people zooming by me on the way up. I stopped. Often. Fortunately, you can read while you wait for your heart to quit moaning. Especially on a sunny day, the view from the top is breathtaking and well worth the effort of the climb. Amazing historic site right on the water! So Absecon lighthouse is considered one of the most haunted sites in Atlantic City with a rich history for lighting the way for safety for ships since the 1850's. The Absecon Lighthouse opens at 11am and we were there on time. It's a Monday in September so we had the place to ourselves. It's $10 per person to climb the 228 steps to the top. A bonus was that Bayard Moran was there to greet us at the top. He shared a lot of information about the history of the lighthouse and the fresnel lens as well as took our picture. There is a lovely gift shop on the first floor and free parking on the street. I'd definitely recommend this experience. read more

$10 to climb the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey? Worth it. It is a good workout, and you get to see a nice view and learn a bit of history. This historic lighthouse has been around since it was first lit in 1857. Though the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1933, it withstood the test of time and is now a place that is open to the public. Visitors can visit the keeper's house, which is a museum and gift shop. I do not know much about lighthouses or lights, but one of the things that make Absecon Lighthouse special is that its original first-order Fresnel Lens are still in use. Though its light is no longer aiding ships, it is now a light for the public to enjoy. Those who are more adventurous can climb 228 steps to the top for a fee. 228 steps had me out of breath, but the view once you make it to the top is breathtaking. The view is definitely work the trek. Plus, Buddy, the lightkeeper, is up at the top to greet you and tell you stories about the history of the lighthouse. Absecon Lighthouse is just a short walk away from the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Check their website for their seasonal hours. Parking is free. I've been to Atlantic City countless times of the last twenty years but never visited the Lighthouse. This time, we were staying the Hard Rock Casino which is about a 1/2 mile walk or a 5-minute (probably less) drive from there. I walked from the hotel at around 2 PM. It gets a bit lonely if you are walking in the inside streets. I also wouldn't say dangerous, but some sketchy areas (like much of Atlantic City) the further you walk from the Boardwalk. I walked along the boardwalk until I got just past the Ocean Hotel and then walked inland a few blocks to get to the Lighthouse. There was a adequately sized parking lot there...I kind of regret I didn't drive. Parking was free with an entrance on South Vermont Avenue. You can tour the grounds and souvenir shop/museum seemingly for free but there is a $10 (adult) and $6 (child) charge to go up. The grounds are well kept with a small garden area in front. There is also a groundskeepers house with some museum-like information in it. The main building houses the museum (lots of useful information so be sure to read everything) and the gift shop. The gift shops has the usual gift shop trinkets; magnets, shirts, pencils, post cards, toys, mugs, picture prints...The lighthouse itself is a 228-step climb. On the humid (95-degree real feel) day, it was a bit of a struggle getting up there. There are landing stops, every 30 steps to rest. I workout and run regularly, but that climb was rough. Once I reached the top, I was greeted by staffer Dan. After I caught my breath outside and snapped a few photos of some of the amazing views up there, I returned in where Dan educated me about the lighthouse and its history. Dan has a wealth of knowledge of not only the Absecon Lighthouse but all lighthouse on the east coast. I learned a lot there and was very appreciative that he was up there to educate myself and others. The staffer downstairs was also very nice and patient. I highly recommend the Lighthouse to everyone visiting Atlantic City. The free museum and grounds are worth it alone...but for those who can physically make it up to the top, the views you see and the mini-class given by the staffer make it a must-do. read more

It's 228 numbered steps (you'll work off that pizza or cheesesteak you ate earlier) up a spiral staircase to the top of the tallest lighthouse in NJ and the third tallest in the nation. You get an excellent view of AC and the surrounding area from the top. They give you a signed card at the top to prove you really made it and be sure and talk to the keeper who knows more than you'd ever guess about lighthouses. There is a small museum/gift shop and the bottom so take a minute to check that out. Also, there is free parking on site. Oh and if you're like me and not a huge fan of heights, don't look down while walking up/down the steps. Trust me! At 171' high, it is the highest lighthouse in New Jersey mostly due to it's higher elevation then Cape May or Barnegat Lighthouse. There are 228 numbered steps to the watch room so you need not count them. Fortunately there are 6 platform rest stops which have small square viewing windows and information boards to read. The stairs are spiral and open framed. The good news is they are not closed in and you won't get claustrophobia. The bad news is that it is heart challenging even though you have rest platforms. For most people the 228 steps to the top should not be a problem. Once you get to the top you will be one level below the original first-order fixed (non-flashing) circa. 1857 lead glass Fresnel Lens. You will not be able to go into the lens room. What you will get is a business card that says you made it to the top and a docent who knows more about lighthouses then you might ever want to know. Step outside to some wind and a 360 degree panoramic view of the area including the Absecon Inlet, Atlantic City Boardwalk and Atlantic City.. It's a rush looking down and around just because you are up so high and not enclosed. Park free next to the lighthouse. There is a replicated 1925 Keeper House which is a gift shop/museum. The museum has some history. local memorabilia, marine and shipwreck information/ artifacts. The Oil House has a Fresnel Lens Exhibit. These exhibits are all free so if you want just look around.. To climb the lighthouse a donation (tax deductible) is charged. $7 Adults, $6 Seniors (65+), Active Military free, 4-12 ($4). A coupon for $1 off is on their website and AAA discount is also available. It's a non-profit organization. Each year during the month of October there is a weekend "Lighthouse Challenge". Took a trip to a.c but didn't plan anything besides a festival I wanted to go to. I had passed the light house driving so I decided to look it up and was thrilled that we could actually go in it. They have a mini museum and gift shop inside. You pay $10 for adults you get a discount if you are students or veterans. There are 6 landings which have a window and a little area to move to the side so you can take a break from the stairs. It is extremely hot but you get to cool off at the top. The view is great. I also got a nice business card from the tour guide that said I had climbed to the top which was so nice. I'm not athletic so it took me a bit to get up (no longer than 10 minutes) and I'm feeling that today . Totally worth doing it. To be fair, we went on an afternoon when it was raining/drizzly. The stairs were a little slick but had handrails which helped climbing/descending the stairs. The employees in the main entrance and at the top of the lighthouse worse masks and had plexiglass between them and the customers. Plenty of signage and social distancing markers in the main entrance as well as a hand sanitizing station right upon entering. Only 12 people were allowed in the lighthouse at one time to avoid overcrowding given the pandemic so that was considerate and made us feel more comfortable during our trip. All in all, a great experience for tourists that was reasonably priced and followed COVID-19 policies/suggestions to keep flattening the curve! read more

If you find yourself in AC and wanting to do something other than the usual, take a trip to this historic black and white lighthouse right in the heart of the city! It never disappoints! It's super inexpensive and a nice tush workout too :) It's the tallest lighthouse in NJ, and 3rd tallest in the US. It's 456 steps round trip and my kiddos climbed it for the first time at ages 3&5 so it's definitely doable for the wee ones. Just watch the curves! Kids under 4 are FREE. Kiddos over are just $4! There's a tiny gift shop/museum with very informative, kind employees. Feel free to chat with them about the history of the space. They were very willing when we visited. They have really neat old photos of the parties they used to have by the light of the lighthouse. Don't miss them! They do offer tours, but they aren't so frequent. You can easily do it self guided, no problem. They host FREE climb days on major holidays such as Mother's & Father's Day and kids are FREE on National Lighthouse Day which is Aug 7th. They host fun events such as full moon climbs, haunted tours for Halloween, Santa & his Elves climbs, group vow renewal, couples BOGO admission for Valentine's Day and so one. Check their site! So fun! I have yet to do a "By the Light Of The Moon" night climb, but it's on the list for one of these days! The lighthouse is open all year round but hours change seasonally so double check before you visits. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday and the last climb is a half hour before closing time. The spiral staircase climb is fun and in a sense beautiful, there is something about the metal lace spinning below your feet as you circle up and up... Small view windows on landings let you take in views of the city and read up history of lighthouse posted on each landing. Each step is numbered after one of fundraisers, so you don't have to count (I always tempted!) On very top, old lens still lights the night along with two 500 watt light bulbs - impressive contraption made by French. Chat with lighthouse keeper for a bit, he knows a lot about this place. This lighthouse is awesome. Tallest in NJ, say whaaaat. My manfriend and I went on a late weekday morning during the winter, so parking was ample (street parking and I'm pretty sure they have a lot). Admission for adults is $7.00, but I saw a little AAA sign and it's a buck off per person. $12 to climb up a historical monument? NO PROBLEM. It's a donation for a non-profit, don't be so stingy. They also have a coupon listed on their website for a dollar off. Speaking of donations - while googling the lighthouse after we visited, I found out they classify their donors as keepers based on donorship level. How cute is that? For $40 , you can call yourself a LIGHTKEEPER and have unlimited admission for four people for a year. Pretty sweet donor deal, if you ask me considering most orgs don't come with any perks whatsoever. For $250-$10k, you get a really boring name: Head/Corporate Keeper. You climb 228 steps, each step is numbered, and the stairwell itself is actually really beautiful. I'm normally not scared of heights, but there is something about climbing an open, circular stairwell that gives me the heebie jeebies. For those of you who have climbed to Lady Liberty's crown, these stairs are a hundred times more spacious and less suffocating. I still held on to the railing for comfort. Plus there are platforms where you can take a break and read up on some history about the lighthouse. A man waits at the top, give you a neat little business card that says you survived/didn't die/are still alive, tells you some facts about the lightouse, the lens and then opens the door to let you walk outside. He warned us it was icy, and it was, so nothing like the fear of death, but beautiful views nonetheless. WOOHOO! indeed. read more

My fiancee and I visited this place for the first time this weekend and had a great time. We learned a lot from the little museum and from the volunteer at the top of the tower. It's a very neat piece of history and the volunteer was knowledgeable and sweet. You can climb the tower pretty quickly and it's very affordable. They have signs and info posted throughout the landings so you can give your legs a few breaks and read up on some history. The view from the top is nice - you can see the boardwalk and the ocean. The volunteer at the top told us all about the frenell (spelling?) Glass and how it used only 4 or 5 kerosene lamps which transmitted light about 20 miles out to sea. Awesome stuff. He made our day with his kindness. A little gem in A.C. and worth a quick stop if you want to do something other than gamble! read more

Hmmm it's a weird lighthouse to tell you frankly. It's location is not the typical cliff by the water at all! It's really funny because it's along the city streets like a few blocks away from the water. I wasn't expecting that at all. It's got a nice clean bathroom by the parking lot. It's a quick climb up. I feel like this place is the most undiscovered and forgotten thing in Atlantic City. Its the largest lighthouse in NJ and the 3rd tallest in the United States. And you can walk up to the top!! As long as your not afraid of heights and/or claustrophobic. Its at the north end of town, we took the jitney to Showboat and walked the rest of the way. You do have to walk past some rundown buildings, which is typical for AC that isn't a casino. Its recently been restored so its really nice to visit, and they have a little museum in the keeper's house. When you get to the top, a guide is there to hand you a card that says "congratulations, you just climbed the 3rd largest lighthouse in America!" They also answer any questions you have. You have an amazing 360 degree view of the surrounding area. read more

It was probably the most foggy day at the lighthouse in a long time, but it was still open when I arrived yesterday. The eerieness of the fog covering the top half of the surrounding buildings, ocean and neighboring beach was actually cool. After climbing all the stairs to the top, the strong winds were refreshing once I stepped outside to the ledge. Take as much time as you need to do each step; it is not a race and the stairs are narrow, so wear sneakers and keep your hands empty to use the hand rails. Don't wear heels if you plan to climb to the top of the lighthouse; steps are grated. Be prepared to help someone in your group incase anxiety takes ahold of them while in the spiral staircase, as there isn't much room to get next to them or ahead or below them. If you use an inhaler make sure to bring it with you and take as many breaks as you need going up or down the spiral staircase. I sincerely say go at a pace that you can handle, and take deep breaths bc it can be a bit overwhelming all of a sudden. Once at the top, you'll meet a very nice volunteer named Ed who is very knowledgeable on the lighthouse. Thank you to people who choose to volunteer, especially here making the climb all the way to the top everyday that the lighthouse is open and patiently waiting up there, alone, for any possible visitors. One of the few worth while things to do in AC. The lighthouse could definitely use a fresh coat of paint but otherwise is pretty impressive. The neighborhood it's located on is sketchy but on the plus side parking is free and abundant. The connecting house is now a gift shop and information center. The museum/info center is pretty bare bones but has all the information you'd probably want to know and the gift shop is surprisingly impressive with all the little Absecon Lighthouse things you may want. The best part is you can climb to the top of the lighthouse for $7. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is that you can't actually go into the very top room with the Fresnel lens because they don't want people hurting themselves on some of the sharp glass parts. You can look up the steps into the center of the lens though. The Absecon Lighthouse is a nice piece of Atlantic City history and a unique experience. At over 150 years old the lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in NJ (ascending 228 steps) and one of the oldest in the country. Admission to the Keeper's House Museum, Exhibits and Grounds is FREE; however, if you wish to climb the lighthouse - which is well worth it - there is a modest fee.
