Recently while shopping for furniture, I visited Vern's Furniture store. While browsing their selection, I saw four rather large cockroaches scurrying across their showroom floor. It was shortly after noon when this occurred. I can only imagine how many other critters are actually infesting that building and the products they offer. There is nothing that could get me to return to that establishment. People shopping for furniture deserve better. read more

I purchase two recliners and a dresser from this place.One recliner was new the other was used They also sold me a refurbish dresser which the paint/coat is now fading a year and 3 months later. The recliner within 6 months had to be repair, 7 months later it's having same issue. I spoke with PAUL the manger and he's exact words after explaining my concerns and what he can do , you know CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, his exact words I quote" IM NOT SENDING A GUY OUT THERE TO LOOK AT I don't make ANY MONEY. Furthermore, Shawn the guy who use to work there and believe in customer satisfaction quit because he wasn't allowed to treat people fairly. Extremely disappointed. Walked in today ready to purchase a new chest freezer... even called previously to see if they sold them. Not one person greeted me while I was in the store. I walked around the chest freezers, compared items, and found the one I wanted. I waited a bit to see if anyone would help me, then took out my smartphone and price matched the exact same model for $120 less online, with free shipping. I still waited a few minutes because I would prefer to spend my money locally, but Verns lost a sale today. As I walked out, 2 employees looked at me. Neither smiled or said a word. When I told the salesperson that their prices were too high compared to what I can get at Costco, he admonished me for comparing a local business to a box store. The problem I am having with this store is their warrantees. When I bought my couch, they were kind, supportive, knowledgeable, and everything you'd want from a furniture store. But my couch I purchased broke. The leg extender bent. They told me they would replace the piece. This dragged out for 6 months of my calling daily. Finally one day when I called they said I'm sorry your warrantee expired a week ago. Theres nothing we can do. So they have great stuff but make sure you're not depending on them to replace anything that's broken even if they say they will. read more

I give this business a "Could have been better" because they fail to tell you that if you live outside the Eureka/Fortuna area, they will not send a repair person in the event one is needed on warranty work. My elder mother purchased a new GE washer dryer set, was delivered and within 4 months both had issues. When I called Vern's, I was told that they would be in contact with their service person, whom would then contact me. Two weeks waiting, and I had to call ( several times) to find out that they could not send anyone to my location because GE would not pay for the travel time without authorization. I called GE and was given confirmation that a repair person would be forth coming however, not from Vern's, they would be coming from an appliance business in Fortuna. I recently purchased a Ashly Stracelen Sofa from verns and although it was a little ''squishy'' it looked nice, however, the V.O.C.s emitting from it are INTOLERABLE! I don't know what toxic chemicals they use in the manufactoring of this couch but I can't sit on it let alone be in the same room with it. I wish I would have kept the 30yo couch I replaced this couch with. read more

I have to say that they have very poor customer service and are in general rude. I bought a bed frame from them and they originally told me they would order it and I would have it within 2 weeks. It's been a month and it still isn't here. When I call and ask about it they act as if I am bothering them. They are very inconsiderate. Being 8 months pregnant I would of planned much better and made sure I was not sleeping on a mattress on the floor. It's incredibly difficult to get out of. Looking on Amazon I could of gotten the same frame for half the price and half the time. Trying to support this local business unfortunately was not worth it. The furniture here is like stepping back in time to the 1980s. It may be surplus but I'm not sure. The quality of the furniture is not very good. They carry some newer models of mattresses. The store has a limited selection of electronics. The place is usually dirty. The carpeting is stained and never vacuumed. read more

My wife came in with the kids to buy 2 new mattresses for a bunkbed we recently purchased. The sales people were too busy chatting with each other to bother to see if she needed any help, after 15-20 minutes of no customer service she finally had to walk out. If you value your time go elsewhere or just order online. So sad that when you are willing to pay more to keep money in the county the customer service is so bad you end up making an online purchase anyway. read more

I bought 2 washer and dryer sets a few days ago (one in off-white for my house and one in white for a rental). I definitely said to the salesman, "I love the off-white set for my house." Vern's delivered a white set to each house. I called to tell them that they delivered the wrong color set to my house. The salesman and store manager proceeded to argue with me that white is all they had and that the lighting in their store might've made the one set look off-white. They refuse to settle anything with me and since we were in dire need of the washer and dryer we decided not to return them. Since the salesman heard me mention that I like the off-white color in the store, he should've corrected my statement then if the set was in fact not off-white. Can't believe I'm leaving a 1* review because my family has done business with verns for almost 20 years. I am currently disabled and sleep in a recliner because of it. My Recliner broke so my brother went to verns(like we always have done in the past) to find me a replacement chair. Because of my injury I need a chair that doesn't rock and will comfortably support me because I have some extra baggage on me which is hard to lose because of my disability. My brother can't find the exact chair I was looking for but found a powered recliner that looks like it will get the job done. My brother buys it with the rent to own and brings home the same day. Because it's powered you press a button to raise the leg rest but as soon as I do this the chair tips over to where it almost kicks me out. Because of my disability I can't lift myself off of the floor so I had to call the fire department who helped me up and we tried to lift the leg rest with the fire department still there just in case and the chair flipped forward again almost pushing me to the floor. So the fire department helped me up again. Obviously this is an issue. My brother called verns this morning 8/25/20 looking to exchange this Recliner because we can't use it. My brother was told because of the Covid-19 situation they aren't taking any returns. I asked my brother if they mentioned that to him when they sold the chair to him and they did not. So I called hoping to talk over my situation and asked for the owner. I was told the owner doesn't take calls and would need to come in if I wanted to talk to him. Because of my disability it is almost impossible for me to go to verns and talk to him in person. So the person who I was talking to transferred me to the general manager. Almost instantly this person was extremely hostile as I tried to explain the situation. I asked why he was being hostile and he said he is under a lot of stress and paper work and had to talk to my brother 3 times. I said I am not being rude and he said he wasn't being hostile just under stress. I brought up that my brother was never told that they won't do exchanges because of covid-19 when they were doing the paperwork for rent to own. He responds telling me that what he discussed with my brother is between him and my brother and that he did my brother a favor by making this a rent to own deal because he says they aren't doing rent to own right now. I responded that I appreciated that they did my brother a favor(isn't the store called verns rent to own?) but we can't use use this chair to which he responded have a nice day and hung up on me. I honestly can't believe verns would treat me like this. This is supposed to be verns GM? Again we've done business with verns for 20 years give or take and this is how my family was treated by verns. I called up furniture design center and explained the situation with verns and they are going to try to help me out. Long story short im stuck making monthly payments of 110 to verns for the next couple of years for a chair I can't use and I will never do business with verns again. Do yourself a favor and stay away from verns and go to furniture design center or one of the other local furniture stores because verns has no problem treating long time customers like this. read more

The service was good, very accommodating and went out of their way to ensure that i was feeling good about making the purchase of my $2500 sectional. The couch was delivered on time and i love it! The frustrating thing is, and maybe it's all furniture stores, but looking online now only 4 months later I see the same couch being sold at different retailer for $800. He listened and help me see what look I was going for... even moved pieces around to let me see. Got everything I needed at this time but will be going back for more in the future. So far...no luck...I went in in December and ordered a sofa and loveseat...two weeks later I went in and ordered a king sized mattress and box springs. I paid cash for all. They had to order sofa and loveseat so told them to combine order and deliver all at once. It is now the middle of February and I haven't heard a thing! I just called and they told me they were too busy to help me so got my last name and said they would call me back. I am fuming right now. I paid cash up front and in good faith and they are giving me the runaround....am about ready to cancel the entire order!!! read more

Vern is a Super nice guy and so is his sales and delivery persons. Have bought over the years and just recently purchased a stove, washer and dryer. They assisted me in finding somebody to help the wife and I move, we are in our seventies, VERN, is the best and really cares about his customers. The help he found was to young guys in their twenties and very strong, we paid them an agreed amount, and they were so polite, they may work for him, I have no idea. We moved to this area last spring. We searched for furniture and appliances in the few available stores around. We ended up at Verns. I will give you the fact that it needs to be updated, they need a womans touch, BUT, you cant beat the customer service they have. Our salesman is Shawn and he knocks it out of the park every time we go in there. We also have had to call about a dryer that stopped working and they were so nice. We were told it was under warranty and they would have the service guy call us. We had a terrible ant situation and they gave us recommendations for bug companies. Fantastic!!! We will be going back for more items in the next few months and now we don't go anywhere else but Verns. Thanks guys!!! Oh, and the delivery guys are awesome. They are quick and courteous. I would not waste your time! Unless your related or good friends with a sales person which by looking at some of these great reviews could be. Or unless you know what you want and care about service or price and absolute sure. It was great at first but as sale went on and deal was done I called back next day to cancel because nothing would work in my place and wanted to think about maybe sleeper so sales person went ahead ordered sleeper I said was too much and asked not to. They delivered the recliner was wrong color it looked different in store when I called the manager said I had to speak with sales person. Wouldn't return recliner because was delivered even only couple or days I contacted their credit people and Vern's lied to them saying I ordered sleeper and had recliner s while well I stopped fighting it I'm paying on chair but they did cancel rest of order but they lost customer who needed much more but I won't buy there and will tell everyone to stay clear!!!!! I would just like to give the biggest shoutout to Vern's and specifically Paul. Our fridge completely crapped out on us last night and we were desperate to get a new one. Went to another store and their cheapest fridge was $1400 and they wouldn't be able to deliver until Wednesday (today is Saturday). We decided to go to Vern's and their prices instantly peaked our interest. We found a stainless fridge for $899. Asked when they would be able to deliver and they said Monday. We asked if their was any possible way to get it sooner. Paul said to give him a sec, went and called the delivery drivers and were able to get us delivery and haul away within 2 hours. I've been a customer here for about 5 years. Never once missed a payment. Well last month while waiting on my disability to come in (I'm on maternity leave from my job) I ended up being ONE day past my due date and they charged me a fee. I explained the situation and had even talked to a person earlier that week and had been Okayed to be a couple days late, literally no one seemed to care and insisted I pay the late fee. We bought almost 2,000 worth of furniture and had the worst customer service I've ever had. Our furniture was damaged, low quality, didn't arrive for over 7 weeks. And when they replaced the damaged furniture, it was with the wrong furniture so it doesn't match the other pieces. THE BEST PART?!?!? Love these guys, but man, the shop is a mess! Great service, great prices, delivery, BUT the place looks like a dump. I have never been to a showroom that looks like the Whinchester Mystey House! Downstairs is a dungeon and probably houses rats of various sizes... The carpets are never vacuumed and there is junk stacked 6 feet deep by the desks and customer service desk. Nothing has been dusted in 20 years. Aside from that, these are nice guys that work hard and offer quality merchandise. read more

I bought a bed frame last Winter and it literally took 2 months to get when they promised it in less than half that. It is true that they are very nice but look out once they get your money. I had to call American Express and start a fraud investigation. Once they saw the money had reversed they quickly called and offered to remedy the situation. Hey Vern's, Why didn't you offer to help me out when you had my money? Needless to say they finally got my order and I paid them. So, a word to the wise, cheaper is not always better. The man took me upstairs in an elevator that was also covered in dust bunnies and packing peanuts. When we reached the top floor he just stared at me as sat in different recliners. Creepy! A tip from a local repairman helped me connect with Verns. I went to several stores locally looking at dishwashers and ranges. Sadly it's hard to find a repairman to service many of the popular brands. Verns services all the appliances that they sell...that's a big deal in Humboldt County. We are very happy with our experience with them. Paul special ordered our appliances and they arrived in a timely manner. The prices were reasonable and no sales tax. The installers were professional and called before coming. We highly recommend Vern's Furniture and Appliances...they'll take care of you! read more

This place is horrid, I would suggest not to shop here, at least with the used furniture. I was going to purchase a used couch they were firm on $200.00. Without noticing the paint splatters & how filthy it was. I let them know about it, they became rude and still didn't go down to $170.00 like I was asking. I also noticed that their game consoles were well double the price of Walmart. $800.00 for a Ps4.. He stated that it's because they will accept "No Credit Needed" although for Walmart there isn't credit needed... He then went on to say, "you can also do monthly payments".. Got a mattress and a deep freezer at Vern's. Paul was very helpful and made selecting the right mattress for my needs easy. I had a nightmare experience at the local Sears with my washer and dryer order and I should have just gone to Vern's. I shopped at Sears for years as a property manager to get appliances. This last experience turned me off forever it was so bad lol. At Vern's it only took a few days for my items to arrive, delivery guys called to confirm, were nice and professional. At the time they had free delivery and no tax. I haven't had a chance to try out the mattress just yet but the service so far has been good which that alone makes me happy. read more

My new stove from Vern's came today. I couldn't be happier. Truly. I was probably the most PITA customer you could ask for -- had to pick something from the catalog, asked a billion questions including personal opinions, took up a ton of time, had a $1k daily limit on my card, changed my mind on the model when I got home, changed my mind on the model a week later, forgot I was carrying a 10% off coupon and asked to use it post-sale, called at least twice a week to check in on the ETA and get prices for the models I was asking him to hunt down for me from his suppliers, and generally was one of "those" customers. Not only was my salesperson ALWAYS professional but he was also genuinely friendly and personable and took all my fussiness in stride. Today when the delivery guys came by, it hit me that I needed to get on Yelp and write a good review for Sean and the guys who installed my new stove. The delivery went smooth, the guys were super friendly and mellow, and hauled away *two* broken units off my property -- cos they're that awesome! I had been searching for "the right" new stove for almost two months, online and locally. Nothing felt right. I considered Costco and Amazon for their return policies, but prefer to make these buys local (that is, not online). I checked the usual local places (including Sears... I was *that* desperate) but I kept getting pressured in various ways and given misinformation or turned off by their attitude about "the competition". You know you hit the right place when things feel good, and for me, that worked out great at Vern's. I've also purchased a washer from them (a few years ago) and that was a great transaction as well. Thanks, Sean, and today's delivery team... you were great. UPDATE: A few months after the stove was installed, one of the burner knobs broke. I called to see if they could order the part and they said they'd look into it but it probably wasn't possible, and that was the last I heard from them. Wow. I bought my mother who is a 65 year old woman a new recliner from Vern's Furniture. We have owned it for a few years and is still in great condition but recently the material is lifting in spots almost like it's peeling apart. I called over a month and a half ago and was informed that they never loaded the information of the sale into the computer system. After speaking with one of the sales representatives they told me that they would contact the distributor/manufacturer. After having to keep following up with the repair guy to make sure he is doing his job which by the way he is a complete moron. After confronting the repair guy that he hasn't followed up on this nor has he contacted me as he said he would. I get told that he has a copy of the receipt "which was back dated". Again I was first told they didn't have any kind of information regarding the sale. All of a sudden after a month and a half of contacting them they have a receipt. I told the repair guy I would be down to pick up a copy of this receipt. As I entered the building I over hear a young man (who is the repair guy) and an very old crusty man saying (who is the owner of Vern's) "oh don't worry I'll vouch for you" as I approached them. They did greet me and I gave them my name. As I did that the little weasel (repair guy) walks over and hands me a copy of the receipt. When that happened I asked them oh what are we vouching for?? They both stuttered and then I presented the situation to the Owner of Vern's. He then told me that they can't do anything for me and I told them I wasn't asking for Vern's to do anything besides contact the manufacturer to send over the pictures for them to review and see if they would be willing to provide anything or send a new recliner. At this point I am mind blown on the customer service and the lack of help they offered me. I spent almost 600 bucks on this recliner for my mother to enjoy and this happens. I left the store with no help and I told them both I would never buy anything from Vern's Furniture ever again. read more

We went in to Verns on Dec. 16th looking for a very specific style of chair to complete updating a waiting area. We had already picked out our sofa from another retailer and told that because the sofa was being custom created to expect delivery in 8-10 weeks. The service at Vern's was great, the sales associate was helpful, took us to the large screen kiosk that we could look at from Ashley and we were even able to send photo's from that directly to our cell phone. So, on Dec 18th, 2017, I called back said we had made our decision, paid in full over the phone and was told that Ashley is an "in-stock" company and to expect our chairs in approx 3 weeks. Fantastic! Knowing that it is Christmas season, we didn't expect to have them in 3 weeks, but were optimistic, since it is an "in-stock" item.The custom couch from a competitor arrived 5 weeks early, but the in-stock chairs are nowhere to be found and, not only has there been no definite date on delivery, the last person I spoke to asking for the chairs to be tracked said they don't do that and even though they receive weekly shipments from Ashley, there is no guarantee of when they will arrive. This was the third phone call to them. The first was to confirm the chairs had been ordered, which I don't think they had on Jan 2nd, the next call they said they would ship on jan 13th and be in our business by Jan 16th.
