Disappointing Stay - Holiday Inn Sydney Waterfront…read more My wife and I hadn't been back to Sydney in nearly 40 years, so we were excited to return last weekend to reconnect with friends and family. We booked our stay through HCI, using some of our points. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the start. When we arrived, our room wasn't ready. That was the first red flag. The lobby furniture was noticeably worn and tired-looking. Once we were finally able to check in, we noticed smudged paint around the door and wall of our room. Inside, there was a gap between the hallway carpet and the tile in the suite -- signs of poor maintenance. Still, we decided to stay. That's when we discovered that the toilet didn't work. We contacted the front desk and were told the maintenance staff was unavailable -- and that we'd need to use a plunger ourselves. Seriously? No one ever showed up, and no plunger was provided. We were forced to use the lobby restrooms, which were in even worse condition: stall locks broken, sinks that didn't drain, and stained porcelain everywhere. We informed the front desk that we had lunch reservations and would be returning around 1:00 PM. We asked for either a working toilet by then or a new room. We also made it clear that if neither was addressed, we would not be staying another night. This is not the level of cleanliness or service I expect from Holiday Inn or IHG. I tried to find a way to contact Holiday Inn or IHG directly to provide this feedback, but had no luck -- so I'm sharing it here. Hope this helps others. If you do stay here, lower your expectations.

I don't recommend walking in front of the hotel with dogs on the sidewalk though. The grass isn't cut, and there is trash and who knows what thrown in the long grass in front of the hotel. Loved the bed, the pillows, the soaps and the staff. We enjoyed this hotel so much. I could see the Big Fiddle at the dock from my window! So wonderful to watch the glow on the water change over the course of a few days. Morning, afternoon, evening, night. This place is also very central to many good places to go - like the Governor's Pub across the street with live music every Saturday night. And the Cidery a little ways up the road - live music on Sunday nights. My dogs and I enjoyed our stay very much. 100%. Loved this place. Hope to go back some day. ALSO - it was interesting to stay here for a few days and see how the port changes when there is a ship in the port or not. How busy it can get, how quiet it can be, what the locals do differently when there is no ship in port. It was all very interesting in early June, 2024.

The views were fantastic and our room was comfortable but certainly not a lodge experience as advertised. Our dinner in the restaurant was a disaster from the beginning. We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation so expected a slight delay in service. That delay eventually became on hour before the last person in our party was served a drink. The only wines available from the wine list were much more expensive than those unavailable. The vast majority of the beer selection was also unavailable. This was communicated to us after a thirty minute wait after ordering. The wait for food after ordering was two hours or more. When it did arrive it was cold and obviously had been sitting for quite some time. The staff don't appear to work together, while waiting for our meals, some servers were setting their tables for breakfast. We were told there was no manager available to speak to us but eventually someone came and comped some of the items. Breakfast was great the next morning with lots of options. Bottom line is don't expect a lodge and eat dinner somewhere else

My only regret was the quality of the bedroom at the lodge itself. Before making your reservation make sure that you have a room with a view. You are surrounded by the majesty of Cape Breton so it is hard to look out your window only to see a wooden staircase.

Typically I only stay at the Comfort Inn when I am traveling in smaller towns where some of my preferred hotel chains don't have a location. The Sydney Comfort Inn is well located, on the waterfront and close enough to restaurants and the casino. Once the check-in completed, I walked down the hallway towards the staircase at the far end and was taken aback by the strong smell of cigarette smoke. I honestly can't understand why hotels still tolerate smoking in any of their rooms. Unfortunately, the smell had even wafted upstairs but it was much less noticeable. My room, on the second floor, was nice enough and comfortable. It was also impeccably clean, which is really what we all want in a hotel, isn't it? An unexpected touch in a hotel of this type is the 32 inch flat screen plasma TV. A complimentary continental breakfast is served, oddly enough, right in the main lobby. It's a bit strange to have lots of people walking by, checking out with their suitcases, while you're buttering your toast. With a $95 rate, this is definitely a good choice in Sydney but with the nearby Delta soon to fly a Holiday Inn banner, with probably some pretty aggressive pricing, they might have a hard time competing.
