I paid a $20 deposit at booking, and $62 per person upon arrival. There were maybe 8-10 total guests on the boat. We had an enthusiastic captain and first mate who pointed out good photo ops and the type of bird (or seal!) that was nearby. We saw tons of puffins, cormorants, razorbills, gulls, guillemots, kittiwakes, and a few eagles and herons. I highly recommend bringing binoculars (or you can rent for $8). They had a small gift shop where I bought cute puffin socks after the tour. I highly recommend this experience!

His extraordinary reply to me, within 24 hours, consisted of five lengthy paragraphs detailing (1) why his costs (hiring a driver, taxes, fuel, fees and licence requirements to legally drive the Cabot Trail) were so high that he needed to charge more than double what I'd originally offered (2) recommending several colleagues (along with their telephone #'s) whom I could contact, and who might be able to offer the same tour for my wife and me more affordably. As a first-time tourist visiting Sydney off a cruise, I had no idea of the burdens imposed upon these tour providers, and now better appreciate why such private tours have become so expensive. I'm so grateful, and appreciative of Greg's generosity, which actually referred me to Sydney Adventure Tours, and a perfect solution for my forthcoming tour of the Cabot Trail. I mean on the plus size you don't wait very long to pass security(unless you get there a bit late, then you're stuck with all the other late comers in a single file line), on the down side you can't really eat or buy souvenirs here. The innkeeper tried to pass off that charm to her guests by instructing visitors only to unload their "carriages" and then relocate them to the side of the building. Unfortunately, the Kay visitors were late, loud, and inconsiderate and beamed their lanterns into our lower unit late at night and left their Cadillac of carriages parked, blocking our ocean view. To make matters worse, they were heavy-footed beasts and clomping around above us at midnight, but then when you're so "entitled", you probably don't GaF. The room was quaint but the beds inside are not the same. One is a platform bed with a better quality mattress. It was in the kitchen area. No matter how odd that may seem, choose that bed. It's better than the lower to ground, weak mattress one we slept on! Not all of the outlets worked and instructions for the shower are necessary and can be found only if you look up!! Now the really odd thing about Room 6 was the ONE WAY mirror in the room with blinds. Perhaps this allows the voyeur-side of you to feel like someone is watching you -- Norman Bates-ish if you ask em. For us it was a WTF moment. So that's my point of view. I'd probably rethink the higher price of stay for oddities (and no ghosts).

When we checked in we were greeted with warmth and helped quickly, lots of hospitality points for this place! We snuck over to the back around 6 pm to check out what they call the 'Beggar's Banquet' -- a sort of feast they host in the evenings where everyone dresses in colonial gear. We're talking full costumes, which I think they provide, but don't quote me on that. The event really goes with the atmosphere of the town, especially if you spent the whole day walking around the fortress, which is basically a giant reconstructed town from the 1700s and a colonial roleplayer's paradise. All-in-all a nice stay, much nicer than our first night in Baddeck!

Disappointing Stay - Holiday Inn Sydney Waterfront…read more My wife and I hadn't been back to Sydney in nearly 40 years, so we were excited to return last weekend to reconnect with friends and family. We booked our stay through HCI, using some of our points. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the start. When we arrived, our room wasn't ready. That was the first red flag. The lobby furniture was noticeably worn and tired-looking. Once we were finally able to check in, we noticed smudged paint around the door and wall of our room. Inside, there was a gap between the hallway carpet and the tile in the suite -- signs of poor maintenance. Still, we decided to stay. That's when we discovered that the toilet didn't work. We contacted the front desk and were told the maintenance staff was unavailable -- and that we'd need to use a plunger ourselves. Seriously? No one ever showed up, and no plunger was provided. We were forced to use the lobby restrooms, which were in even worse condition: stall locks broken, sinks that didn't drain, and stained porcelain everywhere. We informed the front desk that we had lunch reservations and would be returning around 1:00 PM. We asked for either a working toilet by then or a new room. We also made it clear that if neither was addressed, we would not be staying another night. This is not the level of cleanliness or service I expect from Holiday Inn or IHG. I tried to find a way to contact Holiday Inn or IHG directly to provide this feedback, but had no luck -- so I'm sharing it here. Hope this helps others. If you do stay here, lower your expectations.

I don't recommend walking in front of the hotel with dogs on the sidewalk though. The grass isn't cut, and there is trash and who knows what thrown in the long grass in front of the hotel. Loved the bed, the pillows, the soaps and the staff. We enjoyed this hotel so much. I could see the Big Fiddle at the dock from my window! So wonderful to watch the glow on the water change over the course of a few days. Morning, afternoon, evening, night. This place is also very central to many good places to go - like the Governor's Pub across the street with live music every Saturday night. And the Cidery a little ways up the road - live music on Sunday nights. My dogs and I enjoyed our stay very much. 100%. Loved this place. Hope to go back some day. ALSO - it was interesting to stay here for a few days and see how the port changes when there is a ship in the port or not. How busy it can get, how quiet it can be, what the locals do differently when there is no ship in port. It was all very interesting in early June, 2024.
