I absolutely love small museums. This is at the top of my favorites for museums. I was expecting…read moresomething small, a side note. It flows like the actual timeline, beginning from before the Revolutionary War to current day, and actually highlights local Veterans, as close to their voice as possible, AND points out women who broke barriers, to include dressing as a man to participate in the Civil War. It was quite a moving experience. I would highly recommend to anyone in the area. Or as a special trip.

This time was no different when in Hattiesburg, visiting the African American (AA) Military Museum. This museum showcased the many contributions throughout military history by AA. One of my favorite displays was about Ruth Bailey Earl, one of Hattiesburg's native daughters. An accomplished nurse who served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, as well as Cleveland Medical Center and Forrest General Hospital. The building is a decommissioned USO turned museum. What an inspiration and wealth of information learned from the Magnolia state. Moreover, I felt proud to witness the significant beneficence of many local and national AA in uniformed service. I thoroughly enjoyed each fact, photo, audio and relics showcased in all of the displays throughout the museum. It was evident that many families contributed cherished mementos to have this museum tell a story of patriotism. I would highly recommend a visit to this museum as it holds a piece of history that is important, impressive and honors those who did and did not always get their flowers when they gave selflessly of themselves while defending the country.
