The Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby, Mississippi is one of the better, if not the best infantry arms museum to be seen. The museum building is located on manicured grounds and is rather new. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The displays are highly organized, arranged chronologically, and contain artifacts and memorabilia from every major conflict that involved U.S. troops. Displays include items ranging from division and brigade shoulder patches to the actual firearms and ordnance involved in each conflict being presented. And seemingly, everything in between. Rare photographs abound, and a concise historical summary with maps is provided for each exhibit. A stunning room-sized diorama of a medical dust-off in Vietnam will impress and even startle many viewers due to its accuracy and realism. Yes, that's a real Huey helicopter with a red cross on its flank. Outside on the manicured lawn sit the big boys, virtually every model tank and armored vehicle used by the USA. A rare XM-1 Abrams prototype bookends this display, which seems to go on forever. and faithfully chronicles the evolution of tank and armored warfare. Tellingly, there are several Iraqi and Soviet armored vehicles displayed separately, as well. The spoils of war. Artillery? This is the right place to see and touch the real thing. Every artillery tube used by the U.S. military, and also many foreign ones, too. There is a grim reason for so many calibers and designs of these weapons: Lethality. For those interested in aviation, there's a Grumman OV-1 Mohawk observation plane, an AH-1 Cobra attack helo, a Hughes Loach, and the incredibly gawky Sikorsky Skycrane, a giant of a helicopter, rarely seen on display, and meticulously restored. Admission is free, but freedom sure isn't. "ANY NATION THAT DOES NOT HONOR ITS HEROES SHALL NOT LONG ENDURE" --Abraham Lincoln

As someone who tries to take advantage of military museums whenever possible, installation museums are hit or miss. Sometimes they're great and sometimes they're a little sad, small, and dated. The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum is definitely in the former category. The grounds have an good collection of aircraft, tanks, and artillery. The interior traces the history of armed forces in Mississippi from colonial to current times. I have a personal connection with Camp Shelby, as I had two uncles who trained here during World War II with the segregated Japanese-American 100th Infantry Battalion & 442d Infantry Regiment. I was curious to see how their story was depicted. It was well-researched and very detailed. The one aspect that some installation museums have neglected is how the Global War on Terrorism has affected the posts. MAFM has a pretty good set of exhibits addressing this 17-year (and growing) phase in the US Armed Forces, and they're planning on a renovation to better tell that tale. There are some post museums with Active Duty Army divisions who haven't fully addressed GWOT yet! A great treatment of a subject near and dear to my heart, highly recommend if you're in the area!

This is an unbelievably great little Museum here on Camp Shelby. Sadly even though I served three years active duty in the Army here I never once darken the doors of this place and now I regret it. First off it is free which is music to my ears. It has exhibits ranging from the Mexican War all the way to Iraqi freedom and enduring freedom which are the Middle Eastern campaigns. Outside there is a plethora of tanks and helicopters which are fun for any age. If you're visiting Hattiesburg this is worth the quick detour to the South and see the tributes to the men and women that has kept this country safe.

These are a couple of the planes outside of the museum!

I absolutely love small museums. This is at the top of my favorites for museums. I was expecting…read moresomething small, a side note. It flows like the actual timeline, beginning from before the Revolutionary War to current day, and actually highlights local Veterans, as close to their voice as possible, AND points out women who broke barriers, to include dressing as a man to participate in the Civil War. It was quite a moving experience. I would highly recommend to anyone in the area. Or as a special trip.

This time was no different when in Hattiesburg, visiting the African American (AA) Military Museum. This museum showcased the many contributions throughout military history by AA. One of my favorite displays was about Ruth Bailey Earl, one of Hattiesburg's native daughters. An accomplished nurse who served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, as well as Cleveland Medical Center and Forrest General Hospital. The building is a decommissioned USO turned museum. What an inspiration and wealth of information learned from the Magnolia state. Moreover, I felt proud to witness the significant beneficence of many local and national AA in uniformed service. I thoroughly enjoyed each fact, photo, audio and relics showcased in all of the displays throughout the museum. It was evident that many families contributed cherished mementos to have this museum tell a story of patriotism. I would highly recommend a visit to this museum as it holds a piece of history that is important, impressive and honors those who did and did not always get their flowers when they gave selflessly of themselves while defending the country.
