As a national organization, I think Big Brothers Big Sisters is wonderful. I was a Little when I…read morewas an only child living in another state. I love my Big Sister and I keep in touch with her to this day. But since this is about the Anchorage location, I'm going to speak to my experiences about that. And to be frank, it left a sour taste in my mouth. I tried to volunteer with BBBS Alaska twice, once as a high school student and once as a full-time working adult. I wasn't matched with anyone the first time since the program for high school students is rather small. I was told they had to close my profile for potential matches once I was a high school senior, which I understand since many people, myself included, go to college/university out of state. A little disappointing but fine. The second time was much more frustrating. As a disclaimer, I do not know if some of these things happened because of BBBS national policies, or because of the management at BBBS Alaska. Regardless, I was very unhappy with how it ended. To make things short, I was interviewed and attended orientation. (Sidenote: if you interview, be prepared to explain some very uncomfortable intimate details about yourself and your family). A few months later the match specialist (who was very nice, so my beef is with the upper management) contacted me about a potential match. I ultimately declined just because I was in the process of moving and had other things going on in my personal life. I didn't feel like I could completely devote my time and energy to a Little at that moment. Several months passed, and I get a letter in the mail at my new residence stating they could not match me. No explanation, no phone call or email, just an impersonal letter signed by the vice president of BBBS Alaska or whoever it was rejecting me. I was upset but decided it was not worth contacting anyone over due to my past experiences with lack of communication. If I was unable to be matched because of lack of available Littles, that's fine, but I should have been told that. If you're interested in volunteering with youth, you're better off going with a small local organization. Most likely less strict requirements for volunteers, and better communication and professionalism.

I asked if they could provide someone to help with my daughter a few hours a week so I could work. Nope, we don't help people in Eagle River. You need to find your own provider there, we can't find someone to drive out there. I know because it's sooo far from Anchorage. I asked if they would help with a small amount of rent money to help us keep our apartment. I'm talking about $500 when we are between jobs and drowning financially. Nope we don't help with that. Well, what DO you help with? You have no problem asking people to volunteer to raise money and have no problem fund raising but where pray tell does that money go? I can tell you where it isn't going! It's not going to a family struggling to make ends meet at the moment. I guess they'd rather see a family separated into different shelters and a person with Autism that will never understand why they wouldn't help us. Their commercial is misleading as is their website. They never really say WHAT they will help with. Wouldn't recommend. If someone has any clue of what services they DO offer, feel free to message me as to what those are because at this point, I have no idea!

The emails were friendly so I felt positive.. I arrived at the shelter and Jillian said she had not been emailing me, and some other woman had. So she lied about exchanging emails. Our cat was really upset in her carrier and I almost changed my mind. She took our cat and she refused to let me see where our cat would be placed . She said something about a quarantine which was totally ridiculous. Our cat's shots were very up to date. Then Jillian had me fill out a very lengthy registration for our cat's history on a super tiny laptop which was incredibly difficult to use. I finally was done filling out the forms. I decided to just look through the window to try to see my cat. Jillian came over to me and said in a very rude tone, nothing is needed from you, so you can leave! I was very upset that Jillian would speak to me in such a horribly rude manner. I had donated a lot of towels, to the shelter and they were still sitting on a chair when I left. Not one word of thanks! I looked at my cat on the SPCA website and I felt sick! Our cat was sitting on a stained pet bed and half of the bed was hanging off a shelf. It did not look like a big space and there were no windows. I regret very much giving our cat to SPCA. Jillian should not be working there at all. She's a terrible example of customer service. I will never recommend SPCA to anyone in the community. I would go pay to get out cat back if I could. I am very worried about her. They have a weird rule about that though!
