It has taken me a few weeks to build up the fortitude for which to re-live this story. I had a puppy only a few weeks old that I thought was building up a bloated stomach and when I watched her strain to poop it looks like there was no clear path for the feces to exit. I couldn't get ahold of my regular vet so I took her down immediately to this location in Yorkville. They took her in and insisted on almost $600 as an emergency reserve. They examined her and freely admited that they could see no particular reason for any issues and could not do an ultrasound until the next day when I can only assume the owner would be in. I kept trying to get ahold of my vet the whole time I was outside. When I finally did get ahold of my local veterinarian she told me that if she was stable just to bring her home and bring her in to her tomorrow morning to be looked at by her regular doctor. On the phone my regular vet told me what questions to ask to find out if she was okay and stable and whether or not her backside was blocked or clear. Once I could determine that it seemed everything was normal and it was just me overreacting, I wanted her released. Even this location confirmed that the puppy was stable the whole time and even according to this emergency service they couldn't see an obstruction anywhere and could not see a buildup of feces inside the dog either but they guilted me to the point where I was in tears crumpled on the ground in front of the building on the sidewalk in a panicked State. They kept pushing me into having an x-ray with contrast which is what they called it. I even phoned back twice from the parking lot telling them no, don't do anything further just give me back the dog and I will take her to my vet in the morning because you've already told me that she stable. And they twisted my emotions by saying "what happens if she dies in the middle of the night you will feel terrible let us at least to do the X-ray with contrast because you're already here". I explained that I couldn't afford this and was happy to go to my vet in the morning. They pushed so hard that I finally in tears let them do it. I realised afterwards that it was just their way of making sure they didn't have to give me back my money or as little of it as possible. I will never again go to this location in fact I will drive out of my way to go somewhere else because who needs that emotional heart-wrenching pain to spend more money that you can't afford. And by the way, the puppy is absolutely fine. There was nothing wrong with her and they should have said so. They should have said we cannot see a reason for any distress. Take her home and let your vet look after her because she's absolutely stable. There was no reason for them to take the other $400. That was my rent money and I told them that but they didn't care.

Our cat Masha had a horrible case of stomatitis, poor baby already had some teeth removed and we've tried other alternatives that did not work and she was starting to be afraid of food as it caused her horrible pain, even a simple yawn was excruciating pain. Our main vet clinic suggested to go to Dr.French for more teeth removal. Dr. French who was not only the kindest but also super knowledgeable Veterinarian very gently suggested and explained that Masha should have all her teeth removed and with some hesitation we have agreed. It has now been 3 years, no teeth and we have the happiest cat in the world. She eats with absolutely no problems and she is full of life. The ladies at the front are also super nice and I honestly couldn't have asked for more. Thank you to all the staff and Dr.French you guys are truly the best!!

I was referred by a local vet to Dr. Saundra Hewitt at the West Toronto Veterinary Surgery office. I found Dr. Hewitt to be extremely friendly and showed a very genuine care and concern for my dog. She examined him, asked me all kinds of questions related to his activity level, his eating habits, etc. and then took great care in explaining to me what he was experiencing with his knee. She said that although she could correct his knee with surgery, it wasn't really necessary at this stage, especially given the uncomfortable recovery. It's so refreshing to have a surgeon really consider the dog first, rather than just say, "He needs surgery" just because it CAN be an option. The cost of surgery is always a consideration, of course, and if you aren't prepared for it, can really be an issue for some. Nobody wants to fork over thousands of dollars for something that isn't absolutely necessary, so I was really relieved to hear that my dog would be fine without surgery. In the couple of weeks since my appointment with Dr. Hewitt, my dog has recovered very nicely, from which she suggested was more than likely just a bad sprain. The knee condition was more of an underlying issue that he can live with comfortably for many more years. My dog is now back to his normal self, walking and running around like he used to.

She went above and beyond to help move my cat to Japan, including significant off-the-clock research and follow-ups. In my opinion, her services are worth all the time and dime. Caveat, as some commenters have harped on this: her services are not cheap. But, and I'll stress it again here, her services are exceptional. My family is moving to Japan with our beloved cat, and this is a fairly involved process of vaccination and documentation. We booked a number of consults, three home visits, and asked her and her team to fill out documentation for the Canadian and Japanese governments. She handled this all so well, taking excellent care to not only give vaccinations, but also to rush ship blood samples to the US, where the rabies testing lab is located. She also came into our home with full PPE every time, ensuring our safety, which is a big factor for us. She followed up on challenging export rules and even did a final check before departure. Oh yeah, and she is amazing with animals. Our cat can be wary of strangers and medical procedures, and Dr. Tina put her at ease and left a good feeling in everyone's heart. The result? Our cat is safe and sound now in Japan with no issues at the border. Seamless. So: worth it. Seriously.

This was the closest emergency hospital to us. I rang to make sure that they would be able to take my pet. It was really hard to get a hold of them on the phone, presumably because it was so busy. They did a very quick intake on who to expect - breed of dog, name, my name, etc. Since it's during Covid, when I showed up they told me to call. When they were ready for me I brought my dog into the lobby for a quick check from the vet tech. After that she was brought into the back to wait for a doctor to see her. We were asked to wait in the car while this happened. All of the remaining consultations would be done via phone except for pick up/drop off of dog. We were probably in the car for around 2 hours without much news. Afterwards we were told that they did some sort of scan and they were able to identify some sort of mass on her. Unfortunately we found out that an ultrasound wouldn't be possible until Monday which is when their radiologist comes in. They offered to keep her overnight for observation but we really just wanted her home with us. This visit of the scan, consultation, drugs administered, and take home drugs came out to around $600. This really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My dog's annual checkup is a little less than this and since this is an emergency visit, not the worst. We did come back for an ultrasound and it was kind of the same in terms of wait. Super long wait! Probably felt extra long because we were anxious to find out how the pup was. The results of the ultrasound were pretty conclusive. We consulted with our own family vet and their recommendations were the same as the emergency vet that we spoke to as well. The emergency vet that we talked to was very patient on the phone and spoke about my dog like she was a family member of mine. It was pretty reassuring in a very frightening situation. I honestly think that they did a good job with the treatment of my dog. They did their due diligence and weren't pushy with any procedures or recommendations.

My regular vet advised me to go to TEVH immediately where my cat was diagnosed with Vestibular disease, an inner ear issue. I was reassured that he should improve in a couple of weeks. He was prescribed ear drops to clear up some ear bacteria and yeast. Once home he seemed to improved marginally but then stopped eating, had nasal discharge and was lethargic. After several return visits he was admitted on Saturday May 9, it was recommended that a CT scan of the head, thorax and abdomen be done. Results indicated that he had an inner ear blockage and infection that needed surgery. He was to remain in hospital on a nasal feeding tube until surgery for a Bulla Osteotomy - Ventral could occur. I visited him every day. He was very quiet but alert on the days I saw him prior to surgery. On May 13 surgery went well, lots of material (gunk) had been removed from his ear. I was told a steroid for inflammation had been given and he should be feeling better soon. During surgery an esophageal feeding tube was placed so that he could receive medication and food while recovering until he began eating on his own. Cornish Rex cats do not have a lot of body fat and are very sensitive to anesthesia. This is common knowledge regarding the breed and I have been told about this by previous vets and by breeders. Rexs need to be kept warm. Thursday morning I expected to hear about discharge details. Instead I heard that he was still a little slow to come around from surgery and they would like to keep him for another day. Lots of reassurance he was doing well and that I could come and visit him until his discharge on Friday. At Thursdays visit he appeared heavily sedated and not very responsive. The tech said they had him on a warning blanket and he looked like he shivered at one point. I noticed that his face was quite dirty and he had matter around his mouth and dried urine on his back legs that I tried to clean off. During the visit he coughed twice, a very deep phlegmy wet cough that was not reassuring at all. Thursday evening I asked the vet if he was getting pneumonia because he coughed twice and sounded really awful. I heard no that this was from the anaesthetic and he was actually sounding better. I was told his lungs were X-rayed and there was no sign of pneumonia. I called later that evening after 9 p.m. to get an update and heard that Jerry was doing great, they were weaning him off supplemental oxygen and he had peed twice. Friday morning when I saw TVEH number come up as a call at 10:30 a.m. I thought.... good, I can go and pick him up. Instead the vet calling identified himself as a critical care vet. He said that Jerry had double pneumonia and sepsis and that I should come right away. He was in septic shock when I arrived and I was told his body temperature and heart rate were low. He was under a heating blanket and non responsive. Later that day instead of bringing him home as planned I had to euthanized him. After asking I learned that his inner ear infection was positive for E. coli bacteria. I am aware that E-coli bacteria can be resistant to standard and generally prescribed antibiotics and can require different and more aggressive antibiotics. How does a cat go from nothing but positive reports to pneumonia and sepsis in such a short period of time? Even after having asked about the possibility of pneumonia the night before. I don't believe that he was being monitored as closely as he should have been. I am left with a feeling that those entrusted with his care were not paying attention. Throughout the entire process I was also left feeling like TVEH was more concerned that the escalating bill for his care was paid up and current, which it was. In future I would have to think long and hard about returning to TEVH. There are alternatives and other available emergency hospitals in the GTA. Surgery always comes with risks. Those risks were mitigated by receiving reassuring and positive reports at every contact and then the worst possible thing occurs, it doesn't make sense and doesn't fit. My advice to anyone reading this review is if time allows seek an alternative opinion. Check out other emergency care hospitals because they exist. Ask that less intrusive options be tried first. I trusted my cat's care to TEVH and I am left feeling that they let us both down. He paid for it with his life.

Not only is this clinic state of the art, packed with knowledgeable doctors and caring staff-but they don't take advantage of your misfortune by abusing your pocket book. The prices were very reasonable for an emerg clinic and the care was out of this world wonderful! My cat Samuel was very ill - dehydrated, not eating, losing weight. He was rapidly deteriorating within a week. I brought him to my regular vet and they recommended 24 hr care. I was sent to CTVRC where the staff was waiting for me and Samuel to arrive. I left him there and the staff assured me he was in good hands. The next morning Dr. Goldstein called me and proudly reported " Your boy is eating like a champ." The fluids and antibiotics were working and Samuel was making a turn around for the better. He was there for 5 days and I was able to visit every day as the clinic does provide a family room with a comfy couch. Dr. Goldstein is one of the most amazing vets I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He is knowledgeable, compassionate, and has a real love for animals. I always laugh when he picks up Samuel after an examination and cradles him in his arms as he talks to me about the next course of action to be taken. He really does care about his patients! Dr. Goldstein, not sure when you fell out of heaven, but I sure am glad you fell in my neck of the woods....you are truly an awesome doctor and an amazing person. Thank you for giving Samuel a second chance:)

[Do not go to Central Toronto Veterinary Referral Clinic (CTVRC)]…read more To fellow pet parents: Do not be misled by some positive rating. My experience reveals that this hospital selectively solicits feedback only during "smooth" visits while ignoring cases fraught with issues. I urge you to scroll through their other negative reviews; you will notice a recurring pattern in management's responses: a defensive, gaslighting tone that blames the owner to deflect from their own clinical and communication failures. I am sharing my senior cat's (12.5 years old) journey to warn you. While their surgical skills may be adequate, their post-operative "care" is a transactional nightmare. 1. Management's "Gaslighting" & Refusal of Accountability When my cat suffered a preventable post-op infection due to their vague and insufficient wound-care instructions, the response was not professional concern, but aggressive defensiveness. The manager's response (see attached screenshot) is a masterclass in "victim-blaming." Instead of addressing the lack of guidance, they attempted to weaponize my "attitude" as a concerned owner against me. It took immense pressure to receive even a reluctant apology. They would rather argue for an hour than admit a flaw in their protocol. 2. Aggressive Upselling & Disregard for Quality of Life Despite Milou's advanced age, the specialists pushed for extreme, high-revenue options like full-limb amputation and chemotherapy. They hide behind the "we must list all options" excuse, but the narrative was clearly steered toward the most expensive and aggressive procedures. It felt less like a medical consultation and more like a sales pitch that prioritized their bottom line over a senior animal's peace of mind. 3. The "Emergency" Illusion vs. Reality They claim to have constant emergency availability, but my observations in the waiting room suggest otherwise: Feb 12th: I watched the parents of a shaking dog wait for over three hours--having to eat lunch in the waiting room--only to be told to go home because the facility "lacked availability." Feb 26th: In the room closest to the lobby, I heard a male doctor loudly exclaim "Everything looks bad!" before even closing the door. This performative alarmism seems designed to instill fear and pressure parents into high-cost decisions. 4. Transactional Professionalism Their recurring response during crises was: "This is all we can do." While technically a statement, the dismissive delivery earned this 1-star review. Compared to my local vet (Juno), CTVRC's communication is heartless. They offer "free rechecks" as a funnel to pressure you into unnecessary, billable tests. To the CTVRC Management: I anticipate your canned response: "You could have brought him in for an emergency check, but you chose not to." Let me be clear: seeing how you treated that shaking dog and how you spoke to that dog parent, I knew returning would only feed your revenue stream without benefiting my cat. God and Karma see the truth. Regardless of the polished PR responses you post here, the universe knows whether you truly care for animals or just the transactions they represent. If your intentions are not as you claim, karma will eventually do the work. Summary: Save your money and your pet's dignity. My experience was purely transactional and lacked basic empathy for a senior animal. Read their responses to other 1-star reviews--the blaming the victim style tells you everything you need to know about their ethics.

I have wanted to write this review for a while now, but decided to wait to see if my level of disappointment and anger at Downtown Animal Hospital would subside. But it has not, so here goes... In early September of last year Benny got very sick and we rushed him to the emergency Vet, at that time we were told that he suffers from lower respiratory disease, in addition to the heart disease and pancreatits that he has been battling for several years. We were told at that time the prognosis for a dog with his complicated conditions was three to eight months. On the night of Friday December 29th 2023, we noticed that Benny was not breathing normally. Again we rushed him to Downtown Animal Hospital where he was a patient for years on Saturday December 30th, after x-ray and blood tests we were told that Benny had pneumonia on top of all his existing conditions. We had to hospitalized him on that Saturday and Sunday. Then we took him home on New Years eve as he was doing better and seemed to be slowly improving. In the last week leading up to his passing, he had some good days and other days were not so good, but Benny hung in there and kept fighting the good fight until his heart gave out. His breathing never did normalized even though we were supplementing his oxygen at home to help him, but even that couldn't beat the pneumonia and the damage it inflicted on his little lungs. In the last few days he stopped eating and it was a struggle to get him to take his meds. On Monday, 8 January, we resorted to feeding him via a syringe which he hated. When we were getting ready to feed him on the next night, which was Tuesday, 9 January, he took one look at the syringe and went into a panic / anxiety attack. He started to pant very badly and no matter what we did he never regained / caught is breath again. He passed away within minutes in my arms at 7:35PM. I / we cannot believe that Benny is actually gone. It is all so surreal and it hurts like hell. But what makes this so much harder to bare, is our final interaction with Downtown Animal Hospital, in particular, Dr. Vihos. On the 30th and 31st of December when Benny was hospitalized there, he was given oxygen therapy, antibiotics, other medications and 2 x-rays were taken of his lungs with a total of just under $2,500. Then when we spoke to Dr. Vihos on the Tuesday following, she wanted to do 3 more x-rays even though Benny had 2 x-rays a couple days ago. We felt it was a bit much and over done, and did not want to subject Benny to all of that radiation. Dr. Vihos never called to check up on how Benny was doing or any other Vet there since we had been seen by Dr. Steede in the past. On the morning of Wednesday, 10th January, we called Downtown Animal Hospital to let them know that Benny had passed the night before and to inform Dr. Vihos. We were told that Dr. Vihos had gone on vacation, but will be informed and that Dr. Steede would be informed as well. Well, to this day as I am writing this review, we have NEVER received a phone call from Dr. Vihos or Dr. Steede expressing their condolences for the passing of their former patient, Benny. You would think that someone in the business of caring for animals, it would have been the natural thing to follow up on the patient. I would always hear negative things spoken about Vets and how money hungry they can be, but never wanted to believe until now. It seems that Dr. Vihos and Downtown Animal Hospital is only in business for the money and how much they can squeeze out of vulnerable pet owners. And lack care and compassion for our fur babies which we place in their care. We are blessed to still have one more fur baby, Teddy and we will NEVER set foot in Downtown Animal Hospital again. Your experience may be different than ours, but BEWARE!
