The community dates back to 1950 and has continued to develop over the years. Suniland Park was created from Rock Pit #21, a five acre parcel that Miami Dade County purchased in 1916. In 1938 they added 3.5 acres and dedicated the land to be used for a park. On September 8, 1962, the county officially agreed to develop the property with athletic facilities including baseball and football fields and basketball courts. In 1999, the facility was deeded by the county to the Village of Pinecrest. The park was completely redeveloped during 2002-2003. The $1.6 million improvements to the park included building a gazebo, enhancements to the basketball courts and fields, a new jogging/walking path, and lighting upgrades. Today Suniland Park is known for Andre Dawson Field and Howard Palmetto Hall of Fame Field. Andre Nolan Dawson, nicknamed "the Hawk" and "Awesome Dawson", is an American former professional baseball outfielder who was born in Miami. He played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball on four different teams as a center and right fielder and spent most of his career with the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010 and is a longtime Pinecrest resident. The main field was dedicated to Dawson in 2011. The park is home to the Howard Palmetto Baseball Softball Association, the largest recreational baseball and softball league for children 4-17 in Florida. The league was founded in 1962 and since then over one hundred and twenty thousand people have participated, coached, or attended games at the league. The active ten-acre park has multipurpose athletic fields for both baseball and football, batting cages, basketball courts, a multipurpose room, a Wi-Fi Spot in the gazebo, a playground, and Pawcrest Park, the only off-leash dog park in Pinecrest. Many generations of Pinecrest kids grew up playing at this park and it is still just as beloved today.

Park amenities include a recreation center with an Everglades mural, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, an all-purpose field, and a shade covered playground. In addition to all of the activities in the park, Coral Pine Park is also a pineland preserve. Pineland is a globally endangered ecosystem. It is only located in south Miami, the Keys, and parts of the Bahamas. Pineland once covered 180,000 acres or 12 percent of Miami but by the time Miami turned 100 in 1996, less than 2 percent remained. Today only fragments of the Pineland remain. Pinelands contain 225 species of native plants, 20 percent of which are found nowhere else in the world. Five of the plant species are listed as federally endangered.

During WWII Kendale Lakes remained largely rural as the rest of Miami sprang up. In the 1970's and 80's it was considered a bedroom community with homes owned by doctors and lawyers. Today Kendale Lakes is a well-loved suburban community with excellent schools and beautiful parks like this one. Kendale Park has a large open area for walking your dog, play, and exercise. A paved walkway winds through the park and in the center of the park is a playground and outdoor exercise equipment. This is the perfect place for people living in the community to enjoy the outdoors without having to leave the neighborhood. Anyone looking for a larger park with more amenities can avail themselves of the vast nearby Kendall Indian Hammocks Park.

But on a typical day or night, the park is mostly empty, and those benches under trees makes you just want to sit down and watch the day dissipate into the night.

The park is open to anyone else who wants to walk as well but be aware that there may be unleashed dogs. Rockdale Park is dedicated to encouraging dog owners to frolic, run, play, chase, and roll about within its borders. This is one park in Miami that is really for the dogs.

Sugarwood Park has a .3 mile lighted loop walking path, basketball courts, playground, benches, and tot lot. There is also a fitness court that features five pieces of easy to use, low impact gym equipment designed for cardio and strength training and even wheelchair workouts. Landscaping in the park includes butterfly attracting plants. This park is great recreational spot for families and people looking to exercise in South Miami.

This is a 14.5 acre park located in Miami across from Killian High School named in honor of Ronald…read moreRay Ehmann (1940-1975), a beloved coach of the Killian Cougars before his life ended tragically in a car accident at the age of only 34. Coach Ehmann was known for his love of sports, physical fitness, and the out doors. At Killian high school he was a biology and physical education teacher before taking over the P.E. Department. He championed his students and before his passing he accompanied six of Killian's most accomplished athletes to compete nationally in the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test. A unique feature of this park is that it has a walking trail through seven acres of a preserved pine rockland habitat which is only found on the limestone terrain in south Florida and the Bahamas. The only trees that live in this habitat are slash pines along with an understory of palms, shrubs, herbs. Pine rockland used to cover 180,000 acres of Miami Dad County but after development, only two percent are left in public parks and preserves. During my walk through the preserve I spotted many Peter's rock agama lizards, an invasive species from Africa. They were first introduced to Florida in 1976 from the pet trade. Adult males have distinctive red heads and black bodies and can grow up to a foot long. Their range has been expanding and they are now found as far north as Jacksonville and as far south as Big Pine Key. Unfortunately they like to feast on Florida's endangered butterfly species like the Florida Leafwing and the gray Bartram's Hairstreak which also live in the pine rocklands. Scientists are currently studying the effect on the environment of these lizards and I was able to file an online report of my observations with the University of Georgia who is recording invasive species sightings. In addition to the nature trail park amenities include a basketball court, soccer field, softball field, bike path, quiet resting place, playground, outdoor fitness equipment, recreation center, tennis center and six lighted tennis courts. Winter, spring, and summer camps are offered in the park along with tennis lessons. This park is a respite of nature in urban Miami. Come out and play, exercise, bird watch, or just to enjoy nature. The park is open every day from sunrise until sunset.

They renewed the park, it's nice but wish they would've put more slides and more musical items…read morebecause there is space for it. Also, the old park used to have more shade, so that's a big thing missing. My kids still enjoy it but if it's too hot they can't play on some of the items because it's boiling hot due to no shade.
