My friends and I jumped into this beautiful restaurant / bar for a quick bite and some drinks. It was an hour before closing, but we had just gotten off the train and needed food. To our delight we were greeted by a very nice bar tender, who not only offered us drinks, but the most amazing tasty elegant bites... if you are looking to experience a Pintxo bar, this is the place to come! The bar tender was friendly, the food was delicious and we'll likely be returning before the end of our trip.

Our REI Hiking Group's 1st Dinner event was held at this Victor Montes Restaurant on the Plaza Nueva, Old Town Bilbao. The authentic decorations, shelves full of exciting bottles of wine from all around the globe and the large display of variety of Pintxos / Tapas, were inviting the minute we stepped into the Restaurant. All 14 of us were seated by one long table which was also creating a warm welcoming atmosphere immediately. Our tour guide called it a Simple Style Dining, experiencing local Spanish mini-Sandwiches - Pintxos with ample toppings of delicacies and choice of red or white wines. We enjoyed learning much about local fishes, sauces and the variety of toppings. They all tasted super delicious because they were served on very fresh tasty bread. We had a fun Evening!!

Best pinchos that I've had in Bilbao. What my group ordered: -We came for pinchos and stayed for pinchos. We ordered a Foie Gras with bri and apple preserve, really good quality Foie Gras, and the bri melted nicely. -Next was a camambere with carnalized onions, 10/10 would do again. -And a mushroom, Jamón Serrano, garnished with little eels. Really good, and I expected the eels to taste bad but they were really there for look. Conclusion. Really good food. All I can say. Order pinchos! The other reviews were from people expecting something else, and I understand, this kind of food has some strong flavors, but if you don't appreciate it, please don't write a bad review.

An institution apparently. Been there forever, and I think the waiters as well! Its a charming old pincho type bar with a menu as well....the atmosphere is casual, local and on the loud side. We stopped here with some local friends since they said we should eat here being that it's such a known place. I enjoyed my pinchos and wine and tasted the basque cider which has some real kick. It was way more expensive than the other places in town so you pay for their famous-ness. There are pictures hanging up of famous people with the owners.

Our drink order was taken and promptly delivered to our table. I ordered a cod dish (sorry can remenber the name) with the potatoes and chorizo to start. Niki ordered the hake with risotto. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The potatoes and chorizo was incredible. The chorizo was spicy and the potatoes were crisp and all covered with a light cream sauce. To die for! The fish was a nice dish. Cod covered with both a lightly spiced red sauce and a delicate cream sauce. It was different but tasty. Nikis dish which I tasted was pouchini mushroom risotto with a hake fillet grilled. It was again different but very tasty. We passed on dessert since we were so full but we will gave to come back and get a slice of cheesecake.

We shared the chicken tenders which could have easily been a meal for someone. I ordered the stuffed chicken with mushrooms, such a big and delicious portion that I could not finish. Our bartender grabbed the icecubes for my drink with his hands. Luckily, I'm not squeamish. We paid cash and sat down. They clearly wanted everyone out before midnight. They were hauling in their chairs to stack. There were bugs crawling all over the bar. I watched them scurry and hide in the cracks. The room is really neat, but needs a good scrub. The bar stools that have cracked covers need attention. I wish I'd had a chance to eat the famous lamb pinchos. The pictures looked yummy. Prices were decent. There is outdoor seating available.

We ordered a few pinxtos, but unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what we ordered. However, I do remember that we all enjoyed what we ordered...whatever it was. ;) The service is pretty straightforward and the staff was nice and very helpful in helping us decided what to try. I will say that the overall ambiance was beautiful because the restaurant/cafe has retained a lot of the aesthetic from when it opened in the early 1900s. As a tourist, I thought the prices of the pinxtos and wines were pretty reasonable. Perhaps, if we visit Bilbao again, we should make Cafe Iruña our first stop.

They open for dinner at 9pm, and you will need reservations. We had our hotel arrange the reservation. They specialize in Ribeye and fresh fish, both grilled. We ordered the Ox Chop Ribeye for two. It weighed over a Kilogram and was prepared to our request of medium-rare. It came with a fantastic amuse bouche of puréed squash soup and a bite of a seafood salad. We split a fresh lettuce, tomato, grated cheese, and olive oil salad. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe and tasty. The steak was the best we have had in Spain. In my younger days I could have finished it all, but no more. The service was very attentive and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We considered ordering grilled octopus as a starter and they said it would be to much. They were right. It was not inexpensive (€171) but worth every euro. Can't recommend it enough.

My family and I came here during our trip to Bilbao. My sister and I ordered the meat medallions and simply did not enjoy them. Instead of forcing ourselves to continue eating meat that tasted like it came out of a prison cafeteria, we politely asked if we could order something else instead. The server or manager, still unclear which, although the ego strongly suggested management, immediately became defensive and hostile. He started lecturing us about how the meat is "supposed" to taste, as if informing us about pre slaughter cattle nutrition was going to magically improve this metal tasting dish. My sister continued patiently repeating that we did not enjoy this meat and asked if we could replace it with something else. At that point this fully grown man, who appeared to be well over 60 years old, aggressively grabbed the plates, slammed them together, and said, "Well I don't like the meat in your country, you Fu***** bi***." My sister is a minor, which makes the entire interaction even more disturbing. After his dramatic exit, loud enough to make the whole room uncomfortable, he shuffled back a minute later to continue explaining the meat to us as though we were lacking the intellectual capacity to understand the flavor profile of tenderloin beef. By then our appetite was gone, the atmosphere was ruined, and we decided not to order anything else. The medallions started it, but he finished the job, completely killing our appetite. The most concerning part is that he appeared to be in a leadership position. If this is how customers are treated for politely sending back a dish, it raises serious questions about basic professionalism in this restaurant. Bilbao has far too many incredible restaurants to waste your money being insulted by a man whose emotional stability clearly isn't suitable for the hospitality business PS: After reading other reviews, it appears there is a recurring pattern of defensiveness and hostility toward criticism rather than any effort to resolve issues professionally. How surprising. Shame on you sir. And shame on the restaurant for being represented by such an unprofessional individual.
