I've been getting my haircuts at Victory for around 5 years and highly recommend this chill, sorta retro, friendly barber shop. I get the standard cut and in my biased opinion it always looks great. I recently started taking my kids here too and they both love it and also look great when they get out of the chair. If you need a barber or want a change check them out. Friendly staff, with a very clean, hipster kind of shop. If you're looking for that lumberjack kind of look, this is the place to be. It's more expensive then most barber shops, but at the end of the day they are quality and if you're willing to pay for it, I'd say check em out. Got myself a fade and a trim and it cost about $35.00 plus tip. I'd go back for sure. I wouldn't do it on a bi weekly basis but maybe once a month. Just get it cut short enough you don't have to go back in a week or two. Al in all, good little shop. I believe they are a chain with some shops over on the mainland. Great cut from Jordan, and a beard styling as well. I was so pleasantly surprised at the pricing! Super affordable. This type of hair cut and beard trim costs so much more in Vancouver where I am from. He bought some hair styling product as well and the product and two services came up to $60. I was shocked! UPDATE Owner's messages at bottom of post. Never trust a bald barber. The first thing you notice when you walk into this "barber shop" is a focus on typewriters, old bikes, taxidermy, and gratuitous, unimaginative self-branding. Everywhere. The store feels like that dumb footballer from high school. You know, that one who can only manage to communicate by raising his fist and stupidly shouting the name of the school's team. "Victory! Duh..." The uninspired, over-the-top design in-store should have had me questioning the establishment's authenticity right away. The bald barbers should have had me running. Never trust a man to cut your hair when he declines to keep any hair himself. A "buzzed on the sides, long on top" was the first style suggestion I was given, which was not surprising. Unimaginative, uber trendy, and easy, just like the boring decor and the bald pates at Victory Barber & Brand. Every other male in the shop was getting exactly that cut. I declined, and suggested some less ironic alternatives. My barber went to work. Perhaps he was nervous that he couldnt cut my hair in the same unique style everyone else was getting. Perhaps he was struggling to imagine new ways to articulate the store's name. Whatever the case, over 45 min cut, he said not a word in conversation to me. Awkward, much? Maybe the silence was part of the try-hard hipster aesthetic? I walked out of there less $40 in my pocket, and with a cut I could have had from any Supercuts. All in all, I felt like I was in an episode of Portlandia. Get your hair cut here if you want people to see you getting your hair cut someplace trendy, NOT if you actually want a good haircut. Never trust a bald barber. UPDATE In response to the owner's comment: Tried to contact me multiple times, eh? You added me on Facebook, and sent me two messages: One on Friday, and one today. I'm a chick and I got my hair cut here a few times with Crystal and had a great experience. Admittedly my hair is quite androgenous, so Victory was appropriate for me. They carry an excellent assortment of products that are well thought out. I live in LA but my roots are still in Vic and I make a point of always getting my haircut here. I've had my hair cut by Aahmes (sp?), Matty and Paul; all of which do a rad job. I find this place to be one of the most welcoming and friendly businesses I know with almost everyone saying 'hey' and checking in. Heck, these guys even entertained and cleaned up my 8 year old daughter's insane hair while I got mine cut. Big props to Matty and his crew. Best barbershop I know. Many thanks to David D. for his review of Victory Barber. Having just moved to Victoria I had no idea where to take my 15-year-old son for a decent haircut, but your review clinched it for me. A proper, old-school-style barbershop, complete with typewriters, taxidermy and old bikes? Not to mention bald barbers sporting glorious amounts of facial hair? What could be better than a little eye candy for me to appreciate while I sit and wait for my son to be shorn? I booked him an appointment right away, and we weren't disappointed. Not only was the staff welcoming and friendly, but the cut my son received was hands down the best he's ever had. No contest. He looks like a proper gentleman now, and that's what we were aiming for. If that means to David D. that my son falls into the "uber trendy," "unimaginative" and "boring," category, well, that's just fine. Great retro atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent service. Old style barbershop with modern values. I had a cut and a beard trim, both were done to my desire, quickly and friendly. If anything my visit was too fast, next time I will arrive early so that I can enjoy a beer and soak in the atmosphere more. Slightly on the pricey side, but I've been to more expensive places with lower overall quality and you are paying for the experience as well as the cut, so in my opinion well worth the cost. read more

Good bunch these guys. I always feel comfortable coming in, and their attention to detail is great. Hard to find barbers nowadays that commit to the technical details of a haircut and combining that with impecible customervice. Even if I could give zero stars I would still probably give 1 star as a benefit of a doubt. Considering that this place is still in business it must mean that there has to be at least one thing worth coming here for. Sadly this is not the case for me. I will probably never return to this place. This places reeks of Tryhardiness. It's the equivalent to paying hundreds of dollars for ripped and stained jeans. You can tell so much thought and money was put into making this place look old and hip. As for my experience with one of the so called "barbers" basically he ignored my instructions on how long to keep my hair, instead imposing his personal preference while he chatted to his friend the entire time. Don't pay the extra money for the look or brand this place tries to promote. The haircut I received was decent but definitely not worth the price I paid. You're most likely paying the high price for the whole package this places offers cause it's definitely not for the mediocre haircut alone. Save your money or throw it away to the owner so that they can spend it on more expensive junk. The choice is yours. read more

I had a good experience the first time through here. I'm terrible with names so forgive me that. My first experience was just before my wedding, had gone in to get my beard cut fantastic job was done by the woman who cut my beard. Had it been after that time I had written this review it wild have been far more positive. The second time through here I was hoping for a repeat of the first. Again I had gone in to get my beard trimmed. I seemed to get the impression that due to getting only a beard cut I was wasting people's time. My husband comes here every time we visit our good friends in Victoria. Even though we only visit once in a while everyone always remembers us and are so sweet despite the fact that we are just silly, uncultured Americans who can't speak French! My husband is always happy with his cut, the barbers listen to what he wants and give tips on what they feel would suit him. I changed barbers and came here on a friend's recommendation. First visit the barber was quite rude to me and belittled me when I asked for a hairstyle recommendation for my curly hair saying, " how would I know what looks good on your head, y'know? How would I know that?" ( a hair professional should have some recommendations right?) He gave me a cut and at the end simply turned me briefly to the mirror and said " okay you can pay at the front". Second visit the barber simply cut it MUCH too short on top after I asked for it to be left long on top so I could style with some product. After a few fails at other salons cutting my 8 year old sons slightly einstienesque wavy hair we were told to try Victory. They said "if anyone can make his crazy hair look cool it's Victory!" And by George they were right! The barber was incredibly patient while my son talked his ear off about Minecraft while giving him a rather stylish cut. It was about $25 which is higher than the other places I went by about $5 but it was a waaaay better cut and the atmosphere is super casual, you don't feel rushed. read more

Barber & Brand lives up to expectation. I walked in and was promptly served. I had a short but efficient conversation with my barber before he so much as put a towel around my neck. Once we were on the same page about what I wanted he did a very professional job with just the right amount of pleasant banter. Their is a strong aesthetic in the shop; one reflected in the price but given that haircutting is an aesthetic pursuit this can't really be a complaint. Nonetheless if you're put off by a little trendy hipster/steampunk vibe then this might not be the place for you. Friendly and professional staff greet/assist you when you arrive. Appointments are recommended, but I didn't have to wait without one. The barbers are courteous, attentive and receptive to the client's expectations. Be precise in making your expectations known. The atmosphere is strongly masculine...but a bit precious. I dig nostalgia as much as the next guy, and all that grandfather-era stuff is cool, and it's nice eye candy while you're getting a haircut, but it's expensive fluffing. If all you want is a no-bullshit haircut, you can save about half the cost and go to one of the chains. If what you want is the no-bullshit haircut AND the theme park-style atmosphere, Victory Barber is it. All they need is a sarsaparilla fountain and a singing quartet and maybe a monkey handing out cigars and they've nailed it. read more

The wood floors and old-school decor, mentholated scents of men's products, heavy-duty barber chairs, and classic rock LP music is comfortably trendy without devolving into the kitschy feel of similar retro-hip barbershop-salons. While strategically placed design elements may be appealing at first, the lack of actual personality was all to evident. From the initial stare of vacant vintage glasses to the brisk "this way" the pervading sense was not at all welcoming. While I am not looking for a new best friend, minimal interaction at some point during a fairly intimate service is a good thing. One of the things I have always enjoyed about a barber shop is the ability to walk in any time they are open, and get a haircut. If the place is booming, all chairs full, them I sit down in the waiting area and read car magazines or similar, listen to the banter and join in if I feel like it. I decided to try this place out as it was one of the few open Sunday downtown. It certainly looks nice, sort of a modern update on a classic old barber shop. I walked in and saw only two of the chairs with customers, they looked like a father and son, so was pretty happy, no waiting! No one greeted me so I walked up to the counter and the gentlemen there asked "how can I help you?" At first I thought he was joking (why else would someone walk into a barber shop?), but I then realized he was serious. So I took off my hat to show him my hair, and said "A hair cut?". He then said, very nicely, sorry, we are fully booked. I looked at all of the empty chairs, and then back at him, expecting to be let in on the joke any second. Instead he grabbed the appointment book and stated they were fully booked for the day, being Sunday and all. This is not a barbershop! This is a men's stylist with all of the reasons I choose a barber shop over a men's salon clearly missing. No welcoming casual atmosphere, no walk ins, no good natured banter. Just felt unwelcome and unwanted, and certainly not accommodated. I don't mind a wait when a place is booming, but to be told they are fully booked when only two chairs are full seems like they are missing out on opportunity. If you want a men's stylist where you book ahead, then maybe this place is for you. If you are looking for the casualness and friendliness of a drop in barber, lots of better choices in Victoria. read more

This is my favorite place in the world -- not just including Barbershops, but anywhere. Amazing shop (the best in masculine decor), excellent hair stylists (who can do anything perfectly, from a simple razor cut to very complex or trendy styles), the best hot shave I have ever experienced, and the best anywhere in shaving supplies and male toiletries, including great colognes and artisanal shave soap. I decided to give the shop a try as it is located a convenient block away from my office. The space has a strong, albeit over the top, focus on its decor. At the end of the day, I could care less about the store design, as long as the service I am paying for is worthwhile. My first experience was average. The barber seemed far more interested in joking around with his co-workers than acknowledging my attempts for small talk. I'm not demanding that my barber be interested listening to my every word, but having the customer service skills to carry on a casual conversation certainly could not hurt. My haircut was mediocre, but far off the mark for its nearly $40 price tag. Against my better judgement I decided to come back and try another barber to see if the experience could be redeemed. It was a disaster. The barber mumbled a hello, which was about the extent of his interaction during the cut. I attempted to strike up a conversation which was ignored, along with my instructions/expectations as to how I wanted my hair cut. Instead my chair was turned around away from the mirror as he attempted to complete my cut as quickly as possible. My hair came out looking nearly exactly like his own and nothing like what I wanted. That said, its mainly my own fault for not learning my lesson the first time through. If you are looking for a ordinary haircut, don't care much about customer service, are alright with the shop's premium price and don't mind being having your haircut style forced upon you, then this is the place for you. However, I would strongly urge you to learn from my mistakes and spend your hard-earned cash elsewhere. For a place that prides itself on offering a superior experience in comparison to a standard barbershop I certainly did not notice anything noteworthy other than in my wallet. This place REFUSED to give me a haircut just because I was a WOMAN. I have a short barbered haircut and have been going to barbershops for a long time. Victory Barbers (Gastown location) called me to confirm if the appointment was for myself or for someone else. After I confirmed it was for myself, they said in the most patronizing voice that it *is* a barber shop and they only cut men's hair, but they were sure the salon next door could take me. They didn't even ask what kind of haircut I have and outright denied to cut my hair just because I was a woman. This is discrimination and I honestly baffled at the treatment I received. They have a female barber but they don't cut women's hair even if it's a barbered cut?! read more

The stored look nice and designed for gentlemen so I thought why not might as well give it a try coz I live close by. Like Steve B's comment below apparently you could not just walk in even when it is only a barber shop (rather than a salon or a spa). Made the reservation for a few days later and there was no wait. However the attitude was not friendly, no one actively greeted any body, I was wearing a cap and they did not bother to make my hair wet and blow dry it to make it slightly fluffy before cutting it. Honestly I had to cut a little bit of my hair as soon as I got home and redo the whole style with products. I guess it is ok for the simplest buzz cuts but I would not recommend that if you want something more (e.g., a little bit of style or precision, friendliness etc.). read more

Great shop in perfect downtown location. Crystal is fantastic as is Pierre, her super friendly French Bulldog. Lots of great products for purchase as well, though I haven't indulged in those yet. My choice to rate low is a bit complicated. I noticed many fantastic cuts and neatly trimmed beards at Victory. But the haircut I received was nowhere near the photo I provided. I am now scheduled for a total head-buzz, and can thank Victory for the long summer ahead of scalp sunburns. There are talented people at this Barbershop, but a 1/9 chance you'll wind up with an absolute butcher. Is the risk worth it? Probably. Do I regret taking it? TOTALLY. read more
