BEST (OFF LEASH) "DOG" PARK IN BOSTON!!! It is not fenced in which may seem surprising considering its proximity to the expressway but it really doesn't need one. Once you find parking in the smallish, dirt lot, the park is entirely on a peninsula even at low tide. There are usually at least 5 dogs there after 5pm and they range in all sizes. The weekends are busier when it's nice out but the busiest I've seen it is noon-2pm when dog walkers from around the city fill it with up to 40 dogs the last time I tried counting! and there was plenty of room for all of them; the swimmers fetched tennis balls from the water, the runners chased each other in the field, and the older dogs relaxed in the plentiful shade. The only reason it doesn't get 5-stars is the same as another reviewer mentioned. The city hasn't really claimed it with much more than the sign when you first pull up. It would be great if the trash was picked up regularly, they paved the parking lot or the walking path around the perimeter, and/or ideally installed a fresh water fountain with doggie bags dispenser. read more

Favorite neighborhood dog park. My dog always leaves happy and tired from playing with the other pups. Always meet cool people and it's turned into a nice little community where we share toys and refill water dishes scattered around the park. People are always respectful and it's always clean and safe. Edit: apparently this is not a dog park. Well, that is certainly not being enforced by the dcr. In fact the only people that come here to clean it are the dog owners that use it religiously. True, some people don't pick up the waste but again, those of us that come here all the time pick up, even after others'. A few bad apples spoil the bunch but the truth is the bulk of people here all know each other, or at least recognize the dogs, and respect and take care of the park. read more

5 stars for Victory Park, not so many for Dorchester. What's kind of hilarious is that dog walkers have made this park into a doggie heaven. There's a community drinking bowl, and people bring gallons of water with them. The city, meanwhile, has done apparently nothing to encourage or facilitate this seemingly spontaneous dog park. Meanwhile, over at Ronan park, the city put in some absurd amount of money into building a fenced in dog park with rocks and (I believe) a water spigot, yet no one ever uses it (I've never seen one dog in the many times I've been to the park). The city of Boston would have gotten so much more bang for the buck had they put a fence on the bridge of this park, and installed a water line, as well as a trash can. :) read more

I just started taking my dog to this park and it is great. The dog owners "get it" I have to say I was shocked to see so many plastic bags containing dog "stuff" on the ground. There are two trash barrels at the park. Don't be lazy people. Plastic bags are not good for our planet or for our dogs. I love that the park is on the water..my dog loves to swim...just keep an eye out for the trash and broken glass. I try to leave with a bag of trash each morning. read more

I was so surprised when I found this place. I went on a weekday around 4 pm and there was only 1 other person there. It is a tiny island dog park directly east of 93, immediately south of the rainbow tower. There is a small parking lot, and a short bridge that goes over the water to the park. It can get pretty muddy, and windy, so make sure to wear appropriate attire. It is like a smaller version of Stodder's Neck in Weymouth. Let your dog off leash and she'll have a blast running around. read more

Went here for the first time yesterday with my two dogs. Great place for the dogs to swim, space for them to run around. If you are looking for a park with walking trails this is not the place for you. One trail that loops around the park, takes about 5 minutes to walk from end to end. Reason for the 3 star rating is the culture of the park. We were bombarded by 4 different dog walkers each caring for 10 dogs who were all off leash. 40 dogs with 4 people supervising = lots of chaos. My dog was being chased and harassed and the walker could not call off the offender. One of the walkers had a very young puppy with them who was wandering off leash and I'm pretty sure she had no idea where he was. As we were leaving the park one of the dogs tried to get into my car with me (the parking lot is out of sight from where the dogs play) and I had to put him on a leash and walk him back to the group. The walker had no idea the dog was even missing. So overall, my experience was more stressful than satisfying. If the walkers hadn't shown up it would have been a good experience but I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

This is a lovely area to walk your dog, however I've consistently been horrified by the recklessness of some of the 'Doggie Day Care' providers who bring the dogs they watch here, creating an unsafe environment not just for the animals they care for, but other people visiting the area. I'm going to detail my experiences below. Victory Road Park is a small island surrounded by the coastal waters of Boston Harbor. There is a parking lot at the entrance, which holds about 10 cars. Walk across a small footbridge, and you're on the island. It is not fenced in. As others have said, all dogs are required to be on a leash (this can be verified right on the Boston PD website about the beach). This never happens. Dog walkers each bring groups of about 10+ dogs, and when the weather is decent expect to see 50+ dogs running around, all off leash. I bring my dog here often, as she loves to splash around and dig (I always keep her on leash). It's hard, because it's such a great area for walking and she gets SO excited to come here, but it can definitely be stressful for my husband and I, as often large packs of dogs will run up to say hello to my dog, which always results in her leash getting tangled up around other dogs, though this is the least of my worries. There have been several times we've been knocked over, and occasionally an unfriendly animal will be aggressive towards us or my dog. What bothers me more than anything else is seeing dogs in terribly unsafe situations. While some of the dog walkers are absolutely wonderful and responsible, many are not and do not keep an eye on the dogs entrusted to their care. This is very hard to do when so many dogs are at the beach. We've found dogs in the parking lot beginning to roam towards the main road. We've found dogs stuck in between the large rocks that border the sand. Some dog walkers will leave their leashes on yet let them loose, and yesterday as we were walking along the shore a tiny pup's leash was caught on one of the rocks. Trying to get free, she had tangled herself up, and was partially in the water...and this was as the tide was coming in. You couldn't see this from main part of the land. I always get nervous when I see the dogs with leashes still left on swimming in the water not being watched. As you can see when the tide is low, the seafloor is covered with glass, rocks, and even a few old metal spikes. What if their leash got caught while swimming and they couldn't get free? There has not been a single time we've been at the beach and not had to help an animal. It's so crazy. I've been looking at other reviews on internet forums and websites, and people have discussed experiences very similar to ours, and there are several news stories about dogs being attacked here. Victory Road Park has the potential to really be one of the best walking areas of the city, but things need to change and dog walkers bringing groups need to be more responsible and put safety at the HIGHEST priority. I just want to stress again that some of the walkers are wonderful people who keep a watchful eye on their "clients", but sadly this seems to be the exception, not the norm. read more

My boyfriend and I are always looking for new places to take our lab, so when I read the reviews of this park touting it as "doggie heaven," I was excited to check it out. Upon arriving, we noticed that the park was generally very dirty and unkempt. Litter all over the place, old wood boards scattered on the beach, etc. -- it was to the point where I felt weird about my dog sniffing and exploring the area for fear that he would injest old needles or something disease-ridden. Honestly, it looks a place where a homeless person would set up camp. When we entered the dog area, we were confused to see about 20 dogs and only 3 people (2 of which were lounging on the park benches, clearly not caring about what their dogs were up to). Then it became clear that this was a local hangout for dog walkers to bring their hoardes of dogs. One man in particular came in with about 20 dogs, all unleashed. That's fine, my dog was unleashed too, but this man had clearly no control over the dogs' behavior. One of them started showing aggressive behavior towards my dog, and then all 10 of them huddled around him, sniffing. I immediately felt uncomfortable, like my dog was on the edge of being attacked. We frequent Cat Rock Park in Weston, where there are a similar amount of unleashed dogs. But there, it's controlled chaos, not uncontrolled chaos where the ratio of dogs to humans (40 to 5) makes it completely impossible for a person to step in and properly handle a situation should it arise. As a dog owner, I think it's important to keep your dog under control to provide a safe environment for others. Obviously that isn't a priority here. read more

This one's for the dogs. From a people standpoint, I give Victory Road Park 3 stars. If the dogs were Yelping (and believe me they do), they'd give it 5 stars. I like to refer to Victory Road Park as doggy beach. There are no barriers or fences here and the dogs are free to roam. It's not an official dog park but since this space just seems to make sense Victory Road Park is makeshift. If you see the sheriff, make sure your dogs are on a leash as this area is more of a walking trail. But when the boss is out of town, let the puppies run wild and they will have a ball. The water is right there so on hot Summer days, it is great if your dog is adventurous and loves to swim. Victory Road Park has a huge open field but very few trees and not many benches. This is a good space for dogs to run, wrestle, or play catch. As I mentioned before, there is no fence so keep an eye on your dog if he/she is a runner. Also there is no segregation between large and small dogs. Our dogs Harley-dog (a mini pinscher) and Hank the Tank (a German Shepherd-St. Bernard mix) mingled fine but they are friendly and harmless. The other dog owners have their dogs under control and there seemed to be no visible problems or issues other than owner embarrassment in regards to dogs in heat. It's natural. It's okay. read more

Hidden behind the Gas tank is the best dog park in the city. Okay so it is not an official dog park but it's pretty close. It's entrance is past the off ramp of the southeast expressway's Freeport St exit. There is a dirt parking lot and you walk over a wooden bridge (only way in and out) and you re in doggie heaven. Green grassy fields, swimming spots, plus usually lots of other dogs running around for your dog to play with. A tired dog is a happy dog, and my dog is always a happy dog when we leave here. read more

Great spot for dogs to run, but very near expressway - and swim in Dot Bay (beware the strange textured silt @ low tide) and play in grass & weeds (MUDDY!!!). There's LOTS of poop!! Most people are considerate (and sanitary) but I think dog walkers (with WAY TOO MANY DOGS to be safe) are not :( also good for people - walk the trail, look for sea glass (amongst the broken beer bottles) or just sit and catch a breeze with the sunrise. read more

This place is amazing. To the lady below with the tiny dog and the long incorrect review who wants to walk her dog on the leash at this off leash dog heaven, find somewhere else to go! The dog walkers can be hectic, but they are there mid day during the week and thats it. Don't go between 12 and 2 if you don't want to deal with it. This is a place for dogs who live in the city that need to run off leash, swim, and be worry free. Its cleaner, safer, and more beautiful then any pee stinking fenced in dog park in the city with its artificial ground. To my other dog parents in the know I'll see you on the island. read more

My dogs love this park. Enough open space to run and play with some small hills that have brush, bushes and small trees. We have always met friendly dogs and owners, and the few dog walkers we've seen there have had pretty reasonable numbers. Mostly this is a park with a pretty regular bunch of visitors who are respectful, pick up after their dogs, and bring water for the communal bowls. We've had no incidents of aggression. The parking area is small and can be very muddy as can the rest of the park after heavy rain. Still, an easy in and out from 93, and a nice place for off leash exercise. If I had a dog this place would get all 5 star. I went years ago when it had less dogs. Now there is just to many, land mines is every where!!! Some dogs must have eaten some really nasty stuff for some of the odor it produce. All the dogs that came here seem friendly, off leash. If your dog is not friendly don't bring them here cause drama will be unavoidable. Fisherman avoid this place, them dogs will swim by your line, sniff or eat your bait!! Shake some dirty salt water, dog body Oder, all around you when they come out. It as if they know it will get you to move away a little so they can rummage freely. read more

I echo Mary Jane's post wholeheartedly. Our dogs were in a veritable dog heaven. Lots of running and water play. We went on a warm Sunday afternoon and practically had the place to ourselves. A few people without dogs came in and out while we were there, also a few big dogs, too. Everyone was cordial, people and dogs mostly did their own thing. No aggression. We brought our own bags and water but there seems to be a community supply of both. I would go again, especially in the summer. What a cool peninsula. The yelp directions took us the long way, though- heads up. If you use GPS, pointing it to the intersection before the park entrance is probably a better bet and might save you 10 minutes, if you're coming from central-ish Boston (South End/Dorchester). read more

Great place to let the dogs run around. At certain times of the day, there are dozens of dogs playing because lots of pro dog walkers visit Victory. A little quieter early in the morning and late in the evening. Go a few times and you'll start to recognize the "regulars" - lots of friendly and interesting people to talk to while the dogs play! It has a little bit of everything - grassy area, trees, rocks, beach. read more

My wife went to this park for the first time last week with our playful, affable dog and they were both attacked by a pack of dogs. A dog walker was there with approximately 20 dogs off leash, one of whom we found out later had recently attacked another dog while in this dog walker's care. She let him off leash anyway and he initiated a pack attack that almost killed my dog and in which my wife's pant legs were bitten by a large pitbull mix. The dog walker "in charge" did not even have leashes for all the animals in her care and it spiraled quickly out of control. It is a miracle that my dog and my wife got out alive. The dog walker involved has not returned our calls and has left us hanging with the vet bills. Animal control told us that this has been the site of numerous "pack attacks" at the hands of dog walkers, that many dogs have died at this park and a few people have been bitten as well. I would tell everyone who cares for the safety of their animal to steer clear. read more
