Unfortunately, the experience at checkout completely changed how I felt leaving. When I booked over the phone, I specifically stated that I would be using a gift certificate. Nothing was disclosed at that time about an additional charge. After my massage, I was told I owed an extra $10 because of the age of my gift certificate. I questioned the charge, and ultimately I was not charged the additional $10, but only after I pushed back and questioned why I owed anything at all. The certificate was purchased in December 2024 and states "4x massages," not a dollar amount to be applied toward massages. Hands of Joy has also not increased its massage prices since the certificate was purchased. What concerned me even more was that after I questioned the charge, additional wording was handwritten onto my gift certificate that had not been there when it was originally purchased or given to me. I will be attaching a photo of the certificate for transparency. Terms added after a gift certificate has already been purchased are obviously not terms the purchaser could have agreed to at the time of purchase. I am away for school for months at a time, so naturally it can take me longer to use a multi-massage gift certificate. Being made to feel as though that was somehow an issue, especially over a gift that had already been paid for, took me from feeling completely relaxed to feeling frustrated and belittled. My biggest concern is for customers who may simply pay an unexpected charge without questioning it. California has specific protections surrounding purchased gift certificates, including restrictions on expiration dates and service fees. I would encourage anyone using an older gift certificate anywhere to understand its original terms and ask questions before paying an unexpected additional fee. Karen and the massage itself were wonderful, and I genuinely wish that had been the entirety of my experience. Unfortunately, the way the gift certificate was handled at checkout, and having wording added to it afterward, left a disappointing impression.

I'm not sure if she understood me or not because of the language barrier -- so if you have past injuries or specifications for your massage, I wouldn't recommend this place due to lack of communication and language. Luckily I didn't so I just told her I needed a deep tissue massage hoping she understood. To start, the table had a thin sheet I laid out to cover myself with. Usually places have another thicker sheet/blanket but oh well! I told myself it didn't matter. I'm pretty conservative mind you, so when she started whipping the sheet around and exposing me without consideration and bending my knees while exposing between my legs, I felt uncomfortable and couldn't relax the entire time. At one point, my entire back side was completely exposed and the sheet wasn't covering me. I was extremely uncomfortable with that. When I flipped over for her to do my front side, she accidentally exposed my breast. Again, I felt extremely uncomfortable even though she said "oops, sorry!" As for the massage itself, it felt unorganized and all over the place. Usually therapist will slow their way into it and work their way around. This lady was all over the places and wasn't smooth. I felt like her thumbs were poking me all over instead of doing a deep tissue. Some parts felt great, don't get me wrong, but she rubbed my triceps so hard with her thumbs I was bruised the next day. When I flipped over to have my front side done, she never worked on my traps, front shoulders, or chest. She spent all her time on my legs (which I couldn't care less about compared to my back, traps, and shoulders). Last thing, when I went to pay at the end of it, she was hovering over me to see if I was going to tip (I'm assuming). Normally people don't hover over you while you're tipping, it's awkward and kinda rude. Overall, I won't be going back. Maybe this is just a bad experience for me. Idk but most massage places are considerate while exposing only the necessary body part and being methodical with the massage.
