It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. Once you get past that you're presented with a surprisingly large, and very sleekly decked out, restaurant. There's all sorts of deals on here for bento boxes and lunch deals. But the full menu is also very reasonably priced. I had the ramen Chilli chicken. And oh my God! It was easily the best I've ever had. Very, very spicy. But sweet. And full of peppers and perfectly cooked chicken. My friend had the chicken katsu curry - and again, said it was the best he'd had. The staff were super cheery and really helpful. For 2 mains and 2 cokes the bill came to less than £24. I sinceriously can't wait to go back for more.

This was one of the first restaurants I dined at in Glasgow with my now husband after our fateful meeting in Japan, so it is very special to the both of us. I'd hopped on a plane to the other side of the world to visit a man I'd known for 14 days, fell in love and moved here. We've returned here loads of times since then, but I haven't been to Nanakusa for nearly a year. In my endless quest of eating out as many places in Glasgow as possible, sometimes the real gems get left behind for the new and exciting places. I was so glad to return last night for a UYE and see that nothing has changed since I first fell in love with Nanakusa (I was already in love with my husband by the time we ate here!) Now, Nanakusa. It does Japanese food, and it does it really well (see the aforementioned reference to meeting my husband in Japan!). I really love sashimi and there aren't enough places in Glasgow that I can eat it, so I always get a portion when I eat here. I also love takoyaki (octopus balls) and can't resist them here. I've tried them elsewhere but Nanakusa's are the best. The service is always friendly, smiling and helpful. It was a little slow last night but there were only two people working the whole restaurant, but none of us were in a particular hurry. I had a small glass of rosé with my meal and they also have a selection of saké and plum wines, as well as Japanese beers for that really authentic taste. The food arrived quickly and as soon as it was ready. Two people had ordered bento boxes and these arrived about 5 minutes after everything else. The waiter seemed really conscious of this and kept coming over which was a nice touch. I loved all my dishes, the takoyaki and salmon sashimi and I also had the chicken teriyaki. Sides like rice and noodles are optional which is great if you're all about the protein. Downsides? As I said, service was a bit slow. I'm also not a big fan of the lighting (the wall panels change colour) as it makes it hard to take nice food photos! Haha! Bench seating can be difficult to navigate getting in and out of gracefully. Booked in for a Groupon deal (you know how I love my meal deals!) as a wee birthday dinner for a friend, we chose the five tapas and wine offer for £20. On arrival we were seated immediately, had the deal explained, and offered a choice of red, white or rosé. We took the poppadoms and spiced onions, which I thought might be complimentary, as in some restaurants, but alas, they weren't. We looked at our choices for our curry tapas and opted for 1 chicken, 2 lamb and a veggie dish, and a meat. When they arrived the colours alone spoke volumes. Each dish looked different from the other, and not in that food colouring flow chart type way. There was depth, consistency, texture, and most importantly FLAVOUR! The lamb keema (mince) was devine, the saag with halloumi was decadently buttery, the lamb curry was melt in the mouth, and the chicken Labrador (it's not really called that, but it's close) was grrrrreat, and finally our haggis pakora was just amazing. We added rice and Nain, which you definitely need to accompany any curry. Wine wise we chose the house white, and it washed down our meal perfectly. The staff were very friendly and chatty, with good humour. There was a bit of difficulty with the card machine, but everything was done to rectify it before I had to venture out in the rain to an ATM. Needless to say I cannot wait to go back and eat A La Carter, or even order a cheeky takeaway.

During my most recent visit we ordered chicken pakora, khumb hara pyaz (a gingered mushroom dish), lamb dhaba gosht, chicken sharabi and lamb ra ra gosht, plus a Peshwari naan. Five tapas-sized dishes turned out to be plenty for the two of us and we spent the meal bickering about which one was the best (it's the lamb ra ra gosht, anyone who says otherwise is a fool). I really like the atmosphere of this restaurant too - the staff put you at your ease and will cheerfully make recommendations and suggestions (like, "you probably don't need both rice and naan if you're ordering 5 tapas, I'd suggest just getting one of the two"). We noticed during our visit that they offer a "tapas madness" option on Tuesdays and Wednesdays which seems like an economical way of working our way through the rest of the menu. Friendly but fairly aloof in terms of service, the young waitress spending much of this slow service flirting with a bartender, Stravaigin's menu offers a good bit of customization whether one opts to partake a just a Burger, in courses or using small-plates as a sort of Tapas. Not neglecting Whisky across a Cocktail list, Elevenses a smoky Citrus masterpiece, the "wee" portion of Haggis is perfect for one with four-bites of liberally spiced Offal alongside equal size quenelles of Potatoes and Rutabaga.
