It is a big tourist attraction so in peak season it can be busy but rarely crowded except at a few popular sculptures like the angry boy. For me the sculptures were OK and felt a bit repetive in style though they are certainly all different. We took the tram here since it is a bit out from central Oslo. I really enjoyed the combination of rich Norwegian history and the peaceful atmosphere that can be found here. Walking along the ramparts, courtyards, and ancient buildings was a wonderful experience. The entire area is well maintained, clean, and perfect for exploring at a relaxed pace. It is a place where you can comfortably spend several hours while learning more about the history of Norway. Admission to the fortress grounds was free, with charges applying only for the museums. I also appreciated that the visitor center provided free drinking water and free soda from a dispenser. We were able to refill our bottles as well. The toilets located around the site were also free to use.

The large crab apple tree planted in the center of the large lawn was so abundant that there were tons of over ripened ones that had fallen all over and littered the lawn. This caused a bunch of bees buzzing around them on the lawn. There are also a lot of tourists walking the outer grounds of the castle, stopping to pose next to the cannons. The views of the ocean and blue skies are noteworthy. It was worth the long walk from the hotel.

I particularly appreciated that the building was open to visitors during my stay, allowing me to see the representative halls where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held each year. The building is located by the beautiful waterfront and also offers lovely views of the Oslo Fjord. For me, it is one of the most interesting places in all of Oslo. Be prepared to wait in line before entering, but the visit is definitely worth it.

This is an amazing area to come visit while in Oslo!!…read more While here on vacation in Oslo, I was interested to visit bygdoy for a few various reasons. First of all, this is a nice area with lots of natural scenery, fresh air and open space. Great to visit in order to escape the craziness of the main city area and to experience the museums (the majority of the museums in Oslo are situated out here on this peninsula). We took a ferry from City Hall to get here after purchasing our Oslo Pass. The ferry was a very enjoyable ride. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day and made for a great boat ride, during which we got to capture lots of great pictures and see some open water. Many nice houses and boats situated along the oslofjord to observe on the way. Upon arriving, we were glad to see much open green grass to picnic and enjoy the view; the museums are also located close by. We first stopped at Fram (polar ship) Museum, but decided to skip Kon-Tiki Museum. After that, we wanted to see the viking ship museum and the norwegian folk museum, but we quickly discovered after consulting the map that those 2 places were located a bit of a walk away. After enjoying a nice, pleasant walk we arrived at the museums. They were both very enjoyable and could spend hours there. There are many homes and locals located on this Peninsula of Oslo, which i was surprised to discover; however overall we had a fabulous time and really enjoyed having a visit here. I would recommend to other people who come here on vacation. By the way, the Oslo pass is worth the money in order to get entrance to all the museums and transport here!

We had seen very positive reviews of this museum so we hopped on a ferry from pier 3 in Oslo and…read moreventured out to this area. It was quite busy given it was a Saturday at the height of tourist session. We were able to get a good discount and got the combo ticket to also visit the Kon Tiki museum next door. The museum is quite good and did a nice job of telling not only the story of the Fram and it's many expeditions but the story of other related explorers and explorations to the Artic and Antarctica. Most of this was new to me so it was quite educational. The two ships were fun to walk through and the many displays contained a ton of information (frankly way more than I could absorb). They do have a small snack area but it has a pretty basic selection if you are counting on it for lunch. Overall a worthwhile visit.

If you are prone to seasickness, be aware that at times rolling seas are projected on the walls and ceiling of the building housing the ship. Informative displays are arranged throughout the ship and the building. I'm not sure if it is worth the price of admission as our entrance was covered by our Oslo city tour. Right across the parking lot is the Kon Tiki museum.
