Cavallino d'Oro is right on the Main Square…read more(Piazza Kraus) and features a welcoming Tirolean character and superb service by Stefan, Suzanne, and their very attentive staff. This is one of those review situations where Gayle and I could add a 6th Star. It's easy to be charmed by Castelrotto/Kastelruth, which has an appealing village character, mountains in the background, a traffic free center, centuries of history, friendly and engaging locals, and small town family feel. That last point further emphasized at the nearby central bus stop that was across the street from a school. In the morning when we were heading out, parents were walking their kids to school, while in the late afternoon when we returned, our public SAD bus dropped us off and immediately loaded up with lots of happy children as a school bus to take that group home. The center of Village action is Piazza Kraus, that includes a cool bell tower (with Chapel), a Catholic Church that seems plain on the outside, but is amazingly appointed and spiritual on the inside, and the Cavallino d'Oro. There were many highlights during our stay including: - A nicely appointed room, with lots of space to move around or hang out, a good strong hot shower, and comfortable beds. - An exceptionally good restaurant. We had Dinner there one night on their half-board plan, which was not only "Kick Ass", but a great value for the money. The breakfasts were also excellent and the Dining Room itself almost begs you to stay a little bit longer (especially at our table that had the alpine view). - A comfortable lounge area where Gayle and I would sit in comfortable chairs, with a drink from the bar, and hang out. A good Wi-Fi signal is available throughout the Hotel, but it almost seemed like a shame to use it in such relaxing and romantic circumstances. - Free laundry machines in the basement. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to use the steam room and sauna just across the hall. - Great Advice. The Hotel has lots of available literature on tourist choices in the area and Hotel staff were very accommodating with various inquiries. I witnessed one teenage guest who had a question about leather bags being sold as part of the Thursday morning market on the Square. The person at the front desk accompanied her out to several of the booths and helped her decide on a choice. I was interested in buying a cow bell, which I thought was the perfect and authentic Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm momento. Stefan was quick to suggest the local Coop, which had a wide variety of these genuine items. I'm not sure when Gayle and I would have the next chance to visit the South Tyrol of Italy. Maybe we should come during the Winter Holidays featuring the Castelrotto Christmas Market, the appearance of Krampus, or a performance by the Kastelruther Spatzen folk music group? If that happens (God willing), we'll surely be staying at the Cavallino d'Oro.

This is a really lovely place to stay!…read more * The rooms are beautiful (we stayed in a "superior suite" with its own little garden for two nights, and then moved to a smaller room on the third floor after that (as the amazing suite was already booked...) * The baths are big enough for two people to soak in after a long day hiking/climbing mountains * The food is simple, but really good quality. Our breakfast *and* dinner was included in the price. The dinner consisted of lovely three or four course meals every evening. They get you to choose what you'd like to eat for dinner at breakfast, so it stops them wasting food as they know what they'll need to cook. * The wine they suggest to go with the daily menu was lovely, and cheap as chips. * There is a sauna and steam room that you can book for a bit of private relaxation (free) * They even have a washing machine and dryer that you can use for free (which is perfect if you've already been travelling for a while before you get here...) * All the staff seem to be multilingual. I was impressed by their speedy switching from German to Italian, but everyone had excellent English too. * The wifi works well, although it is a little slow. I would be happy to stay here again.

We then decided to return and stay some days at the hotel, and it also deserves the 5 stars, for many reasons. First of all the structure, which instead of being made up of a single large building, has several chalets scattered in the green, furnished with style, great presence of wood, stoves in the rooms, large terraces, ancient objects in the premises and corridors and great attention to the environmental impact. Very interesting is also the offer of different specific packages: "alpine blooms", "spring and golf", "sculpture symposium", "photography and foliage", etc., each one with different trips, visits and initiatives. Finally, a particular appreciation for all the staff: the family, which began this adventure in 1954 with the first three rooms and of which representatives of several generations are present with specific roles and tasks, and all the team, all united by excellence, passion and courtesy.

We were on a group tour of the Dolomites region and spent a night here. It's a charming 3-star…read morehotel with beautiful mountain views and friendly, hospitable multilingual staff. The rooms were tastefully appointed and beds were comfortable. The bathroom was nice and modern. If we'd know there was an outside hot tub overlooking the mountains, we would've brought suits. There's a lovely outside seating area on the lawn. They offered us a buffet dinner with an array of delicious and fresh food. There was a raw and cooked vegetable (broccoli and cauliflower) bar with assorted salad offerings (romaine, cabbage, sliced cucumber, baby carrots, tomato wedges, corn, beets) and make your own dressing with good balsamic, olive oil, salt and pepper. Then there were the antipasti: mini cheese pizze, spinach tartlets with a mountain cheese fondue sauce (possibly fontina), cured beef carpaccio (tasted like roast beef versus typical carne crudo), fresh breads. Then the main courses were risotto alla Milanese (a creamy, cheesy risotto) and fresh homemade pasta stuffed with porcini mushrooms and topped with grated gran padano or another sharp sheep's milk cheese). They were little pillows of heaven. They called the dessert "apple pie," but it was more like an Angelo food cake topped with thin slices of baked apple and some crystallized sugar. It was heavenly and not too sweet. The breakfast buffet in the morning was both continental and European. Again, something for everyone. Small donuts with icing, fresh croissants dusted with powdered sugar, a berry crostini (possibly blueberry or blackberry), plus scrambled eggs, sausage, ham; a platter of thinly sliced charcuterie meats and some sliced cheese, mini pancakes. Then there was a fruit salad of diced cantaloupe, green apple, kiwi, orange supremes, plain yogurt with three jams, muesli, another cereal. For drinks, there were assorted black and herbal teas, coffee, three juices: green apple, orange, berry (these seemed to be from concentrate-not a criticism, just an observation). We walked around the town and people smiled and were friendly. Always a good sign. I will absolutely without hesitation stay here again for ski season or really, any season.

The breakfast is good and it seems that the cafe is a favorite of the locals at night. If you expect fancy, don't even bother. However, if you appreciate the more simple things in life, this may be the place for you. Also, the woman who runs the hotel has a brother who's winery is next door and Georg Mumelter makes some of the greatest wines in the Alto Adige.

The hotel picked us up from the train station at no additional cost. The driver spoke broken English but showed up on time in a marked car and made us feel welcomed. It was around a twenty to thirty minute ride up the mountains to the lodge/hotel/resort...lol. Check-in was quick and easy and we were on our way to ski (which was half off since we arrive after noon). The local ski rental place was just a short walk from our room. Our hotel was directly off the slopes so if at anytime we wanted to go in from skiing we could...and the hotel arranged for pick-up our rented ski gear at no charge! Lastly our stay came with dinner. This was my only disappointment. The meal was mediocre at best. It started with a buffet style first course or "hors d'oeuvres". We had a choice of three second corse options and two entree options. Finished by a standard desert. It was not bad. I did not come with a drink so they had a menu of overpriced wine options available. All in all I would definitely come here again. Oh I almost forgot about the spa/pool area. They have one of those outdoor hot pools!!! I just can't say enough good things.

Breakfast is a bit minimal, as in most places in Italy. It's a bit outside of the center, but by foot you can reach the train station and the beginning of the center in 10-15 minutes. The hotel offers free wi-fi, but it's very slow and often breaks.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel in one of the junior suites. The hotel is located directly…read morenext door to one of the main gondolas which connected us to a variety of ski areas, so very convenient. The main centre is just under 10 minutes' walk away which means it's nice and quiet in the evening as well. Our bed was incredibly comfortable and the shower was amazing, just what you need after a long day skiing! Breakfast was delicious - lots of fresh cheese, meats, cakes, yoghurt, and I believe all the food is sourced locally. We enjoyed a nice glass of wine in the relaxing, alpine style bar before heading out to dinner most evenings; and on one of the nights the owners even invited all of the guests to join them for complimentary Prosecco and snacks - very welcoming indeed! To top things off I had one of the best massages I've ever had in the hotel spa! All in all we really enjoyed our experience here. It doesn't feel like a party place so perhaps not the right hotel for a big group, but for a couple, or a family, it's ideal.
