7 years later - we're back! My son's first day at Village was 3 days after his 2nd birthday (yay for taking kids that aren't potty trained!!!) He loves the school as much as his sister did. Upgrades: The school has been upgraded a bit since my daughter was here which is fabulous. There's new play structures, new furniture, revolving imagination role play section, tons of new books and toys. Parent Involvement: The parents are just as involved as they were back in my daughter's village days too. It truly is just like having your friends watch your kid(s). Parents prep snacks, supervisor play areas and do projects. The creativity of parents is amazing - the help to come up with new snack ideas and projects is also amazing for those that aren't as creative. For snacks, the kids have had pancakes, DIY parfait cups, cold press juices and smoothies (made during project and tasted during snack time!)and delicious banana scones. Projects have been everything from cutting fruit for snacks to self portraits New "Friends": Our son refers to his classmates as his "best friends" and looks forward to seeing them every school day. He carried around his class photo pointing and telling us the names of each of his new friends. Field Trips: The monthly field trips are a great way to get out of the classroom. We've gone to the SF Zoo, a fire station, a rodeo, a pumpkin patch, the library, aquarium and even did a grocery store scavenger hunt! What a joyful place this is. Our two year old son has been here for 5 months now, and he is flourishing. The teachers are kind, patient, and always bringing in new ways to keep the children curious and engaged. Since his first day, his classmates took him in and made him feel welcomed, and he was all in. He comes home with new phrases, ideas, and art projects almost every day. When I first heard about Village Nursery, I thought it was an interesting way to be involved in your child's first education experience with the weekly volunteer days. What I didn't realize was the 70 year history of such a special place to build community and friendships. Parenting is definitely a humbling experience, and having a child at the beginning of the pandemic made us very aware of our child's need to be exposed to social situations. We started right when my little one was 25 months, and it was a very rough adjustment. Another family saw his understandably tough transition, and recommended a book to read to him about going to school. We had other parents check-in with us and send us photos so we knew how he was doing on the days they worked. I cannot emphasize how supported we felt from the teachers and other families, and realized it's all the in the name...it really "takes a Village." I love the fact that the parents (we see involvement from both dads and moms) are all there to support each other during this wild ride of parenting, but also that I get to be a part of their child's growth and development and get to know my little one's friends. It's a co-op, so that means it is run by families...with monthly meetings, monthly job tasks, maintenance hours, and fundraising goals. It's a lot, but it's all to build that community and create a space for our kids to grow and thrive. And the teachers create a curriculum that sparks social-emotional growth and curiosity of learning that will continue throughout our child's education. We've only been here a year, but feel the magic of the Village community and know we will be enrolling our 10month old when they turn 2. Oh, and another plus? I hadn't heard of co-op preschools until last year and we're so glad we found Village. It ended up being a great fit for our family and our son has truly blossomed in the past year. He was a very shy 2 year old who took a long time to warm up, even to relatives. But at Village, we found a nurturing environment lovingly curated by dedicated teachers and parents. At first we noticed how the older kids would naturally check on and look after our son whenever he cried or felt sad. Then our fellow co-op parents would come up to us and glow about our son's growth and milestones. We were hooked! Both of my children graduated from Village Nursery School and my family deeply appreciated the co-op format of the this preschool. We were looking to find an early education option where we could participate and be part of our children's gateway to learning. Village allowed us to support our children's transition into schooling through meaningful engagements with the curriculum, the students and the guardian community there. My children were both supported in developing social and emotional learning strategies, academic skills and multicultural education at their developmental stage. Parents/guardians who volunteered to support preschool teachers were also invited to learn more about facilitating learning for pre-k students, and younger. Through tasks like making snacks for the students, creating a arts and craft project, or being a yard watcher, many guardians really created a space for students to thrive. Director Brittany, Teacher Debbie and Teacher Briana have done a phenomenal job with the play based curriculum for 2 to 5 year olds. The Teachers and Parents create an engaging, positive, and warm environment for kids and adults. There are so many opportunities for families to be involved in their child's learning and development. The friendships and connections you make at this school will likely last for years to come. I'm telling you the parents are not the same in public elementary schools. The one thing I hear often is the amount of work for a cooperative school but the work you put in shows tenfold for your child, the school, and community. We are in our 4th year at Village and decided to keep our four-year-old in preschool one more year rather than having him go to TK. It was absolutely the right decision! Village is play-based and the social learning opportunities are excellent. My son loves being one of the "big kids" now and helping out the 2-year-olds. The teachers are incredible and provide small group time for age appropriate academics for the kids headed to kindergarten in the fall. The monthly fieild trips to library, fire station, rodeo, beach, pumpkin patch (and on and on) are so engaging and also change from year to year. I sent my two kids to Village. TBH like a lot of people cost was a big factor. I was initially hesitant about the co-op style, but it was a very good experience. You get to be involved with your child's development and you're able to build relationships with other parents. It's in the name, it really does take a village and having a community that chips in to make the community and school better is the biggest factor after being at the school for 5 years. Big plus is they help with potty training and can start at 2 years old. There is more outdoor area than there is indoor area, which is great for your energetic kiddos. The school is well equipped for various types of outdoor play. Water tables, balls, swings, climbing structures and slides. Indoors is great as well, as there are many stations for the kids to choose from, reading, sensory, dramatic play, and parent lead projects. The program is play based but there is a pre-k program(numbers and letters) for when your kid turns 4 to get ready for TK or kindergarten. read more

To say that we love Village Nursery is an understatement. Trying to find a place for our daughter to go while we transitioned to the next step of daycare was so stressful and we were so scared we would make the wrong choice. I mean how does one choose a place to send the most important person in your life and feel comfortable doing it? The answer is Village Nursery. From the first time I saw it I loved it and now with our daughter going there I love it even more because of the incredible teacher, experiences and just community of parents. She is constantly learning new things in a loving and safe environment and I could not have asked for more. She goes on field trips, she has daily activities, she learns to share and take turns and she has amazing teachers and staff to help her through every step. Came highly recommended by a colleague who said that since his daughters graduated that he misses it and that he made lifelong friends with the other parents! I am very disappointed that this nursery which should focus only play and that sort of thing with kids, tries to engage in political indoctrination of parents. I was SEVERELY disappointed when I got an email from them asking us to attend a training. I used to suggest this school to other parents constantly, but that has changed and I will try to steer parents away from this co op. read more

My child has been going to Village for 5mths now, the school is a fanastic Co-op. Everyone at the school was so welcoming when we started and always happy to explain things or help you when needed. Teacher Barbara is a wonderful. She sings, plays piano and guitar and even plays chase in the yard, all the kids adore her and they learn alot from being a good friend to safety(the focus topic changes monthly) They have monthly field trips and hot lunches. The programme has a good mix of mat time, activites and free play including a hour of play outside where they have a really big yard and play structure. I really like that the kids have a turn once a week singing a song with a plastic mircophone to the class...what a great way to start kids early on getting used to public speaking ;) I really think the school is a hidden gem in Daly City. Our preschooler truly enjoys Village! He started when he was 2 years old and has grown so much socially, emotionally, and intellectually. He's now almost 3 and enrolled in their summer program and enrolled for the following academic year. The great thing about Village is that your child doesn't have to be potty trained when they start. Village accepts kiddos at 2 years old and will even help you potty train them. This is a big deal as many of us parents know! The community is awesome and very accepting of all families. It's a co-op community so you are expected to do a work day once a week in the mornings and help with fundraising events and attend monthly school meetings. Really not hard at all and it's actually nice to know what's going on at your kid's school and being part of the decision making process. Which is so key for early education. Teachers are attentive and really care about your child's well being and development. They create a safe environment while giving your child the freedom to grow in a play based environment. The programming is structured and your child gets to develop their public speaking skills during their weekly share day. There are monthly field trips and each month is dedicated to a new subject that is integrated throughout the curriculum. JAMaROO is also part of the weekly curriculum so your child gets to do music and movement classes taught by a JAMaROO professional. Very diverse students and families and did I mention that tuition is extremely reasonable! Parents will need a little of their time and effort at this school, which is good. We do need to get involved. My youngest daughter will go this school when she probably turns 2. What an amazing find in Daly City! Kids get a great variety of experiences and learn to socialize and problem solve through play. Teachers Roxanne and Theresa lead the way in creating a super-positive atmosphere where all students and parents are welcomed and included. There is a large dramatic play area and tons of developmentally appropriate toys. You won't believe the large play structure in the yard. The kids all love it there. Prepare to be very involved - whether or not you are a "participating" parent in actually working during school days, there are a variety of participation requirements that keep you connected. Both of my children attended preschool here (between 2004 & 2008) and still ask to go back and visit Barbara. It was a nurturing, fun and safe environment and one that I felt comfortable having our family be a part of. Barbara plays the guitar and sings with the children and fosters independence and respect in a warm atmosphere. My son gives Village Nursery two thumbs up and 5 STAR rating! My son (age 3) has been attending Village Nursery School for the past three months and he loves it! When I tell him that he needs to go bed because he has school in the morning, he anxiously says, "With Teacher Barbara?" And I say, "Yes." He goes on to say... "I like Teacher Barbara and I like my school too." He has been attending for a short time and in this short time, he is starting to recognize his numbers and letters. Village Nursery School is a co-operative nursery school and there is a level of parent participation that is expected. Village Nursery offers a play-base learning environment. My older two kids have graduated from this school and in the fall our youngest will attend. It has a very unique and friendly feeling to it. The children really feel like it's their home away from home. The daily curriculum includes numbers, colors, theme of the week, art projects, music, and more. There is open play time in the morning and my children love being able to pick an activity. They also love the huge play structure in the back yard! Our son is autistic and constantly elopes. Because of this he rarely enjoyed outside play structures when he was little. Village Nursery's play structure has been wonderful for him!
