Danny is a great guy!! the Homemade burritos are A MUST!!! The merchandise is up to date and fresh. Had pizza most of the time also.

This wonderful store truly is an old-fashioned "General Store" with all the food, gadgets, gizmos, camping and fishing supplies, auto parts, laundry soap, etc., that anyone could ask for. Additionally, the owner (5th generation owning the store) Danny and his mother (Josie, previous owner) provide home-made burritos and frito pies, which are just the most delicious things ever. If you're not into Fritos, ask for just the red chile. Or you could get red chile over hot dogs, or over tamales, or over burritos, or ... the options are endless. Additionally, Danny carries locally-grown produce in season, and a small selection of other produce year-round. You can always get potatoes and onions, packaged chile powder, canned goods for making just about anything. The camping/fishing/outdoor supply section seems to be constantly increasing. Also: an ATM (*very* handy!), and local souvenirs, including postcards and mugs. The historic photos on the walls are really cool. There are a couple of spots for sitting down to eat - a little table in the back for two, and a sort of foyer in the front with a bench and a few chairs, and a functional Pac-Man game table from way back! I've been here plenty of times, and so I can say: Leave time to chat with Danny and whatever locals happen to be in there. We saw this store coming into town, on the way to the park. Some other campers told us they had good burritos,so the next day we went to check it out. We ended up getting frito pies- the BEST I've ever had although it was a bit hotter than I prefer. We also tried their fish and chips and they were just awesome. We ate at a little table in the middle of the store. After we left, I told my husband I enjoyed it as much if not more than a fancy restaurant. A unique experience. The store had pretty much anything you'd need. Their fresh meat looked better than any grocery store I know. It was very very neat and clean- a big plus in my book. Everyone was so very friendly and kind. I'd come back here sometime. (But not from I 40 pulling a travel trailer like we did. That was plain scary coming down that steep, narrow and curving road- we're going back through the northern entrance to I25) read more

His homemade food offerings are delicious & I think his store carries a little of anything you may need if you're a local or a passerby. We wish we were there at the opening of his new restaurant but we'll certainly be back through to camp at the nearby state park. read more

We stopped at this store on our way across the country - Washington DC to Washington State. We were camping at the state park nearby. Great place! That Danny Torres, what a guy. You walk in that store for charcoal and will realize you are missing other stuff. There 's one of everything, perfect for the location. Then there's Danny. So genuinely helpfull and good story teller, without any pressure, he will work you into the best potato and beef burritos you have had yet. Out of burritos? The blonde chili sauce of his fritos pie will work its way into convincing your brain into returning the next day. I'm kind of a solitary guy but when I left Villanueva, I somewhat felt I left a friend in Danny. Great experience; if I ever make my way back again in the region, I will do the extra miles to say hello to Danny. ... and a couple of those burritos. read more

We arrived here looking for caffeine on our way out of Villanueva State Park. We grabbed a couple of Cokes and went to pay at the counter. Behind the cashier was an ancient, all metal cash register, fabricated long before plastic, LED displays, or computer circuit boards existed. The cashier, who appeared to be in her sixties, said the ancient cash register belonged to her grandfather back when he operated the same store. She said the original building burned down -- the current building is shiny new and stands out in contrast to most of the old and dilapidated buildings in this tiny village. If you visit the state park, take the extra time to visit the general store in Villanuevo and check out the great old cash register. read more

We love this unassuming place in the traditional village of Villanueva. Their Frito pie is just delicious, just the right amount of spice to make you sit up but very flavorful, not just hot. Worth a trip! read more

We made a stop at the Villanueva General Store on our way to the State Park for a picnic with friends. I am glad we did. The owner was the nicest man. He prepared us a breakfast burrito and a tamale with a fabulous bean and red chile topping. We enjoyed it on his patio while reading a local paper. Then we bought some old time candy from our childhood and some locally made prickly pear fruit leather. It reminded me of when I used to sail in the Caribbean in the '70's and we made prickly pear wine! Great throwback. If you go to this area - and it's worth the drive - be sure to stop and shop at this store. I got a good feeling for the owner who helps young people by giving them their first job in his store. The owner, Danny Torres, is the friendliest man. My son and I were meandering our way down through New Mexico and after following a pretty, curving road through some beautiful countryside, we came upon this country store. Danny has both packaged food and items you would expect to see in a general store, but also some hot food ready to fill your belly. We came in just as he was closing, but he happily stayed open for us and he and I chatted about our common ground while waiting for my son. The missus and I stumbled on Villanueva quite by chance and stopped into the General Store looking for "whatevs". Propietor Danny Torrez greated us quite warmly and after some pleasentries asked if we would like to try the Frito Pie. I am not a Frito Pie fan, per se, though given the hundreds I have probably consumed over my life . . . In any event I recalled that Anthony Bordain in his CNN show about cuisine in New Mexico hated the Frito Pie he had in Santa Fe so I figured ordering one would be a symbolic middle finger to his show. This was the single greatest Frito Pie I have ever eaten. Telling this to Mr. Torrez he responded that he gets that response all the time and that people stop off at his store on their way to and from wherever just to get their fix (my word not his). This place is not "just off the interstate". You have to mean to go there. You should. We also had the burrito and the wife preferred it to the Frito Pie and it was, indeed, delicious. Mr. Torrez explained that for years and years his mother insisted on making all of them herself and would not allow him the recipe in this life. If she took any secrets with her you can't tell because this tasty treat is from the angels. read more

'if your belly and your gas tank are empty'. So... on the way to Villanueva State Park (worth going to...) my wife and I stopped into the Villanueva General Store 'cause we were hungry and the sign said 'Frito Pie and Burritos'. Now, I can't say anything about Frito Pie 'cause I have not experienced that particular dish. But I've had a few burritos in my life. And 'Josie's burrito' and tamale, were wonderful! They really hit the spot! We ate, and went on to the park where we had a terrific walk. Getting back to the car we realized though our tummies were full, the car's tank was almost empty! We looked and realised the nearest petrol station was farther away than the amount of fuel in the tank. We stopped back at the VGS to seek advice and another cold drink. The proprietor Danny Torrez came to the rescue. 2 gallons of his personal supply and another cold iced tea, and we were on our way back to Santa Fe. Fill 'er up!! read more
