Narrow medieval streets with winding alley ways are lit at night by old lamps which expose multi-colored French balconies, windows and beautifully colored red tiled roof buildings with rich histories. Street performers entertain in the evenings as you stroll through the narrow streets. Colorful and artistic personalities seem to gravitate to this part of town. Bars and restaurants are plentiful and diverse offering a wide range of cuisines. Some restaurants can be pricey like Le Boudoir and Di Piu but you can also find less expensive fare. It gets very hot in the summer but Old town Nice is blessed with many shade trees and the breeze from the sea is welcomed.. Small unique shops that sell local soaps, boutique clothing and perfumes can be found. There are also some more modern shops. Open air markets selling flowers, candies and sea food add much to the overall vibe of this area of Nice. I love gelato and thought the French have a nice version but I prefer Italian gelato.

Old Town Nice is the place to be for a genuine French experience. There's so many little shops and restaurants around and most of the people speak english, so it's very helpful. They do appreciate you making the effort to speak french though, so make that effort above all else. I love the small little lanes and cobblestone roads, it's very beautiful and lovely. I love seeing that after all these years, they manage to keep this part of France so old fashioned, just how I like it.

Every morning (except Monday), there is a beautiful farmers' market in the middle of Cours Saleya that offers everything from herbs to hats. I initially went around 7am, while all of the vendors were setting up. Not many people were around, and it was very cool seeing the market take shape. I later returned at noon, and the street was absolutely teeming with tourists and locals alike. It doesn't take much time there to appreciate the vast cornucopia that is Marché aux Fleurs, so I highly recommend strolling down Cours Saleya during business hours! Happily, Clayton Cohn

Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner were married here. Marc Chagall lived here creating many beautiful pieces. He and his family are buried in the cemetery at the end of the path. Look for the grave covered in stones to the right. Today, Saint-Paul de Vence is filled with so many art galleries. From classic to contemporary to pop art, it is fun to pop in and out of the galleries.

In truth, both are worth exploring, but it can be a bit much (about 4 miles each way). If you aren't up for that, I recommend staying seaside, but make sure to cross and check out Hotel Negresco and Villa Masséna Musée on the city side. I got an early start (I was out there around 07h30 on a Saturday, and it was great. The sunrise was beautiful through the clouds, and the seaside breeze was the perfect accoutrement to mid-seventies weather. For anyone going to Nice, taking a stroll down the Promenade is an absolute must. At the very least, I would walk from Castle Hill down past the beaches (closer to 2 miles instead of 4). I meant to visit the Château d'if on a Monday but it was closed and ended up at Îles du Frioule…read morehiking around and viewing amazing sights. I'm not sure what used to lay beyond the harbor but the seemingly old military buildings are all but crumbled. The hike around the island requires comfortable boots and if the seas are rough being a wind breaker. I was soaked by a rogue wave on the boat ride over! There isn't much beyond the initial row of restaurants except for a few abandoned basketball and tennis courts. Most of the restaurants have similar food and wifi available. Don't expect much in the off season for quality but you will find a friendly host. If you're an outdoor adventurer be sure to add Îles du Frioule on your list of things to see!

The islands (and the whole coastline of Marseille) are beautiful with their white cliffs, crystal-clear blue water, breathtaking calanques (rocky inlets), and sandy beaches. It is really a paradise. My first day in Marseille, I was lucky enough to get on the last ferry of the afternoon leaving Quai des Belges. I arrived on the main island just in time to run to where I could catch the last rays of the sun setting through a heart-shaped hole in the rocks. What a picture! However, my most lasting memory is from the pier, where I waited for the ferry to take me back to Marseille. It was evening and dozens of men were on the pier with their lanterns fishing for squid. I had never seen anyone catch squid before! They must be easy to catch, because the pier was just covered with squid writhing and gasping their last breaths. What a noise. I'll never forget the sight and sound of hundreds of squid, illuminated by lanterns, gasping for breath.

It would have been less relaxing. Must dos: Walk the beaches, main boulevard. Forville Market, Rue d'Antibes (shopping district), churches, casinos (bring your passport), old port, oh and of course the Cannes Film Festival, lol. Other things to do that we did not have time for: Lerins islands, Sainte Marguerite Island, any of the nearby islands (lol), painted walls, beaches, fortified monastery, etc. Ambiance - See above. The hotels are all very expensive, especially hotels situated across from the beach on boulevard de la Croisette. Hotel restaurants are all obscenely over priced. You can find better values in the old part of Cannes. The beaches are beautiful and free, many hotels setup bars and restaurants on the beach and include chair, towel and drink service. The shopping in the area is excellent if you are seeking the highest end brands from Europe, Louie Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Armani to name a few. I recommend checking the monthly weather reports for anticipated weather. We traveled in late October and it wasn't my choice as it was a business event. The weather wasn't great as it was cool and rainy. September on the other hand is beautiful.
