Every morning (except Monday), there is a beautiful farmers' market in the middle of Cours Saleya that offers everything from herbs to hats. I initially went around 7am, while all of the vendors were setting up. Not many people were around, and it was very cool seeing the market take shape. I later returned at noon, and the street was absolutely teeming with tourists and locals alike. It doesn't take much time there to appreciate the vast cornucopia that is Marché aux Fleurs, so I highly recommend strolling down Cours Saleya during business hours! Happily, Clayton Cohn

Founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for 19th-century European elite, the city has also long attracted artists. Former resident Henri Matisse is honored with a career-spanning collection of paintings at Musée Matisse. Musée Marc Chagall features some of its namesake's major religious works. Our NCL Viva cruise ship stopped here on our return to the port of Rome, Italy. We had to take a tender from our cruise ship to the port of Nice. See my tender pics. At the port we loaded onto a tour bus, which took us to the Old Town Square area on the Mediterranean Sea. We were visiting Nice for the first time with another couple of our friends. As we were touring the old town square center, we decided to stop at the El Merkado Restaurant for a snack and some cocktails. We had a nice table for 4 outside. We ordered two of their cheese boards and some local red wine. The cheese board and local red wine was spectacular. There was lots of cheese to eat. We could not eat all the cheese. We should have ordered only one cheese board for the four of us. Service here was very good for us Americans who could barely speak French. Our total bill for both of us was 58 euro. I would return here for another cheese board. After our lunch and some shopping we took our tour bus back to the port to return to our ship. Nice was a very pretty town.

We try to (of course) do all the "tourists" stuff, but my joy is really spending time with the locals and getting to know the real culture. So much to see and do here: Castle Hill, Old Town (had so many meals here), Promenade Des Anglais (walk around the water front), Cathedral of St Nicholas, Farmers markets, flea markets, Palace Massena, squares, shopping, etc. Other popular things to do that we did not get to do: Marc Chagal National Museum (closed Tuesdays, the day we went), all the other museums, beaches, gardens, Gairaut Waterfall, castles, etc. Population - Almost a million people. 72KM. Ambiance - It's the French Riviera! A great place to watch people, both in the morning when I drink my coffee in one of the outdoor cafes, and during my daily happy hours. Well located, since we are staying a week here, we had more than enough time to visit neighboring cities and countries, but you know that because you are following. We visited Cannes (Film Festival), Eze (a crazy 1 hour uphill hike to the village!), Monaco (Monte Carlo) where I actually won $$ and had my James Bond Martini. Service - Overall good. Price - Depends on what you do, eat or drink. Expect tourist prices. Well, we also went to the Michelin Star restaurant in Eze, Chateau Eza. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1526.

The octopus, both in the fritto misto and the grilled octopus, was unfortunately rubbery. Overall, I would definitely recommend Castel Plage for a lunch or dinner. However, I had to dock a few stars for the service quality at the beach club itself. I understand that the venue is large and busy, but there's really no excuse for how inattentive the staff were. We were sat and told to peruse the menu, then didn't see our attendant at all. After about an hour and half later, and multiple unsuccessful attempts to catch the eye of our attendant, another group pointed their attendant in our direction so we could finally order just some water and drinks. Overall, I would highly recommend the food at Castel Plage, but I would suggest looking elsewhere on the beach for a true luxurious beach club experience.

In truth, both are worth exploring, but it can be a bit much (about 4 miles each way). If you aren't up for that, I recommend staying seaside, but make sure to cross and check out Hotel Negresco and Villa Masséna Musée on the city side. I got an early start (I was out there around 07h30 on a Saturday, and it was great. The sunrise was beautiful through the clouds, and the seaside breeze was the perfect accoutrement to mid-seventies weather. For anyone going to Nice, taking a stroll down the Promenade is an absolute must. At the very least, I would walk from Castle Hill down past the beaches (closer to 2 miles instead of 4). It comes out not cut and you need to use a fork and knife to eat it. It's pretty messy and overflowing with toppings.
