I was looking for an activity to do on Friday, observed Veteran's Day. School was closed, and the…read moreveteran in our home was off of work. I randomly thought of Brushes & Beans. We called around noon, and they made us a 2:30pm reservation. We arrived a bit early so my husband and I could order coffees, and we bought a baked good for my children (ages 4 and 6). I think some might be caught off guard by the macchiato at this cafe, but they are true to Italian size and style (says the prior northern Italy resident). My husband ordered a double and had them add the bourbon caramel flavoring to it (not true to Italian style - ha!). He said he really liked it, and I enjoyed teasing him with a little "pinkies up!" call out when taking his photo. I ordered a decaf Americano (boring, I know) and also enjoyed it. Our children split a chocolate chip scone. There were a variety of muffins to choose from, croissants, and gluten-free items as well. Soon, it was time for our painting reservation. I have to say, everyone we interacted with was patient, helpful, and kind. They each seem to enjoy their job. They came around the tables often to ask if we need anything, and would bring additional paint or offer help and advice when needed. There is a nice variety of ceramics to choose from for painting as well. All in all, we very much enjoyed our visit and would certainly go back again! I was thinking it could be a fun outing for a Girl Scout troop or any kind of club or organization. You could go and paint ornaments, which are affordable and easy to do. I may have to pass that idea past our Girl Scout troop's leader. :)

I love Brushes and Beans! Usually paint your own pottery places are BYO for food and drinks, but…read morethey are half coffee shop, half pottery pain. They have a huge selection of items to paint and prices and pieces range from around $8 to up to $80. You pick your piece and paint colors and then go to work. To get the true color you need three coats, so it can tale awhile. But it is a really fun experience and the staff is really helpful. They fire your piece and you come back to pick it up in a week or two. Great for something to do with the kids, a date, time with friends or even a fun solo activity.

It was something we have always wanted to do, but it always sold out before we had the chance to. As the glass blowing experience approached, I took the day off work and we coordinated an entire day around the session. We were very excited to go. On September 27th, we received our confirmation email reminding us of our upcoming session. On September 29th at 3:07 pm, we received an automatic cancellation email that our appointment had been cancelled and we needed to reschedule. The email provided no explanation for the cancellation. There was no additional email sent and no contact attempted by phone. Confused, my boyfriend tried the number provided and left a message. He also sent a Facebook message. Concerned, I called the company as well and after 2 calls, reached Janine (spelling?). She explained that they didn't receive the glass supplies needed for the session and that they were cancelling all sessions on Saturday and all sessions on Sunday. I asked if they were going to reschedule or offer an additional session for those who have already signed up. I was informed that I could reschedule after January 1st, 2018 because the rest of the pumpkin workshops were booked. I mentioned that a glass pumpkin wouldn't really do me much good in January and she agreed. I asked if we could come another time instead. She told me that she would speak with the guys who run the workshops and call me back. She didn't seem concerned and it was like she was caught off guard by my questions. On October 4th, I still hadn't heard back. I called the company again and left a voicemail for Janine asking for a return call. Today is October 10th. I just attempted to reach Janine again and it went to her voicemail. I left another message, but it's been 11 days since our first conversation. I don't have high hopes that she will call me back. I understand that things happen. I'm not sure why supplies weren't ordered ahead of time (since we booked 2+ months prior and they had already had a weekend of workshops), but even then I can understand that it might have been out of their control. I'm not an expert in glass supplies, but I would imagine that there has to be more than 1 supplier. All of that aside, there is absolutely no excuse for how it has been handled. I would expect a phone call or email explanation for the cancellation. As a customer, I shouldn't have to make numerous attempts to find out if it was cancelled intentionally or in error. When called, I would expect that a business do everything it can to accommodate those that were cancelled. An additional session could have been opened for those who were still interested in attending a workshop. Ironically, Vessel Studio Glass has a 48 hour cancellation policy in which you will forfeit 100% of your session fee if you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment. They provided only 24 hour cancellation notice to us and were not apologetic in any way. They also did absolutely nothing to try and make it right. I am extremely disappointed with my experience and wish that we would have had the opportunity to attend the workshop that we signed up for.

Their jewelry is locally hand made and goes anywhere from traditional to whimsical motifs including Harry Potter, Disney, Hamilton the musical, mosaics, and even dried flowers! Their booth only carries a limited selection of what's in the store where they have partnered with local food vendors such as Olive and Marlowe, as well as other Pittsburgh vendors to sell you almost anything. You can find stickers, clothing, caps, coasters, keychains, soap, candles and so much more! I was able to chat with Jenny who is one of the owners of the business who told me that they offer various craft classes in the store as well as unique themed parties such as Harry Potter for kids. If attending a class is not your bag because of the pandemic then on occasion you can purchase a craft kit in store and arrange for a Zoom class on a particular day to make your craft. They are very flexible when is comes to meeting people exactly where they are. You can find most anything on their website. Have something in particular in mind? Just contact them and they will accommodate your every need. During my visit I picked up two pairs of earrings with surgical steel backs. Jenny gave me some rubber stoppers with my purchases to insure they won't get lost. I purchased a pretty teardrop stud earring set and the Hamilton inspired earrings. I'm all set to enjoy one of my favorite Broadway musicals-"Hamilton." I also learned they do "Wicked the musical" jewelry if you are fond of that show. It's a great place to buy local made arts and crafts showcasing Pittsburgh. Although they are based in Lawrenceville across from Children's hospital, you may run into this business at various events with the last one I saw them at was VegFest. They were also at Picklesburg. Jenny told me that If I ever make to the shop itself the cheapest parking is at Children's Hospital across the street for $3.00. Not a bad deal if you are looking for parking in the area. Will be looking forward to visiting their store this fall to check out their other offerings.
