My friend, who is a devoted Christian, told me about this parish and accompanied me to my first service here. I am catholic and have attended catholic masses my entire life. Going to Vineyard has been a different and interesting experience. I find the format of the service to be unique with the first half devoted to worship music that has the power to provide a visceral condition to anybody thru the music and the lyrics posted on the giant screen. The songs presented do give solid satisfaction, yet featuring music by the popular worship group Hillsong would add more of the visceral feel to the churchgoers.
Rich Nathan is the main pastor of Vineyard. He's highly regarded by the people who regularly attend the services and the countless seminars and events the parish has to offer. Joel Osteen has a much wider appeal across the US and around the world for his optimistic messages. If you're an admirer of Joel and no matter how many sermons of Mr. Nathan you may listen to, you're very likely to stick with the famous minister from Houston, Texas as your preference. Yet, Mr. Nathan's messages, despite being very different from Joel's, are stimulating and thought-provoking. His fiery, charismatic delivery encourages anybody to listen with an open heart. Had Mr. Nathan reached pop culture level popularity that would've attracted attention of those not interested in religion, comics such as Jimmy Fallon, Aries Spears, and Frank Caliendo would've done impressions of him.
Since he is an alumni of Ohio State, Mr. Nathan gushes about the Buckeyes whenever presented the chance. It's music to the ears of the OSU fans in attendance. But since Vineyard has strong appeal to those who aren't Ohioans and may be alums or current students of other Big 10 schools, who are rivals of Ohio State, listening to Mr. Nathan's grandiose praise of the Buckeyes and criticisms of their schools won't endear them.
At times, there are special speakers providing the sermons at the main campus and at the small ones around the Columbus area. They present diverse, yet interesting and insightful topics. This inspires anyone to develop a desire to be a speaker at the parish in the future. But the casual crowd would be more enticed by the sermons if any of them would do a positive message like Joel Osteen is famous for doing.
Fascinating segments of the services are the prayer blessings and baptisms. My friend encouraged me to be blessed at my first visit. It was worth it. I was forthright with the volunteer and the blessing I received was like out of this world. I felt the settling was surreal since the auditorium was dark. It was like being in a scene of a Steven Spielberg movie with my friend and the volunteer both strongly encouraging me to surrender to Christ, which I did. Another time, Mr. Nathan did the blessing by pressing on my forehand real hard, forcing me to lean back and shake, evoking a feeling of the Holy Sprit taking over me. After it was over, Mr. Nathan disappeared, quite different from being with a volunteer wherein you can chat with one afterwards. It was like a dream.
The baptisms taking place at the pool erected on the altar is a unique site. The video profiling an individual being baptized gives you a visceral feel and is convincing enough to make you want to be baptized as well.
Vineyard gives you an opportunity to donate to causes in which you didn't think you would have to chance to do such as the recent donation in helping rebuild a church destroyed in Ferguson, Missouri.
I haven't spent time with Mr. Nathan following a service, but I did chat with Andrew at the Lane campus. He seems to be a regular, down-to-earth individual. At this campus, there's a segment wherein you go meet and converse with others for a few minutes. I never was fond of doing this, but one time a young woman went up to me and she and I engaged in a delightful conversation.
The auditorium and the building, overall, provide splendid pleasures to churchgoers vying to enjoy themselves in a modern facility that represents a fresh alternative to the traditional, older churches. The bookstore offers an array of interesting and insightful books for children and adults not sold in mainstream stores. The CDs of Mr. Nathan's sermons are a lifesaver for those who missed them the first time or want to listen to them again for better understanding. Having souvenirs such as Vineyard T-shirts, pens, and memo pads would be tremendous keepsakes for both visitors and parish members.
The Global Cafe is a satisfactory eatery. The side salad with salmon is unique with the nuts mixed with the greens. The vegan pizza is first rate. A couple of times I've been here, the items were delivered by kids, which was neat. The drawback of this place on Sundays after the 11:30 service there are a lot of people here at this time, which limits seating vacancy.
