We spent about two hours in a private tasting learning about the unique variations from region to region and sampling a wide variety of wines starting with whites and moving to reds. He even surprised us with a wine from the year we were married and grilled up some chorizo cooked in brandy as a special treat. We also got to taste an amazing port from 1944 as a part of our instruction. Such an amazing experience. The space is really cool too-part photo gallery, part wine shop. This is the perfect place to learn more about the wines of Portugal. However, it's not a drop in type place-you need to contact them and set something up. As they are also a registered travel company they can also help you with visits to the wine regions of Portugal or any other travel across the country. Of course the wine shop is open in the afternoons if you are looking for organic/biodynamic wines from across the country it's a good place to shop with great prices on older vintages too.

So this is now a review from *several* months ago, one of, thankfully, only a handful left from our…read moretrip months ago to Portugal, way more exciting than normal life. Obviously while I was in Porto, one of the most important goals I had for the trip was to try *as* many different Port wines, directly from tasting rooms, as I could while I was there. I wrote down a bunch of notes of everywhere I went, food/drink-wise... didn't think it'd take me this many months to get through them all, lol. So obviously, they might not still have the same wines I tried while I was there, especially the table wines. I imagine everything else is pretty similar a few months later, though. They have a very classy, relaxing second-floor space - I had a table to myself, overlooking the river. One of the best spots for getting a view of the river, especially pretty just as the sun was going down. It definitely wasn't the cheapest tasting room in the city, but the space kinda makes up for that. So did, unexpectedly, a really nice, wonderful plate of craft chocolates to go with the glasses of Port I had, multiple flavors. That said, I ended up being less impressed with most of the Port I tried than I thought I would be, especially for the price. All three I tried were decent, but a bit... light. I would've given the Ports 3 stars, but you can't give 3 stars to a place with such a great view and that hands out the perfect included chocolates as an accompaniment, so I asked if I could order a second flight of table wines (yay, being on vacation... I miss that). Happily, even though they were about to stop pouring (it was, at this point, 5:57), they were totally ok with that, so I also tried a couple quite affordable non-Port wines (a white and a red), and two much pricier "reserve" bottles (also a white and a red). Interestingly, while the "reserve" red was quite possibly the best Duoro valley non-fortified wine I tried that trip, I wasn't overly impressed with the expensive white. I *was* very impressed with the other, super-affordable white wine - fruity, super drinkable, but *not* too light. Way cheaper by the glass prices on table wines, too. Verdict, go here when you're tired of drinking nothing but Port because you're in Porto, drink table wine instead.

The staff led us upstairs and the tasting room is pretty small. We chose the classic wine and port flight which was only 26 euros and came with two ports, three wines, and some light snacks. (I intentionally stayed on the Vila Nova de Gaia so I could walk to all the tasting rooms!) Though this is right off the main strip where all the tasting rooms are, there's absolutely *zero* flash here - just a small room in front where you can pick from a menu which ports you want to try, and a small room in the back with a couple tables and chairs, that feels more like the waiting room for a dental office, than most of the flashier tasting rooms around the corner. I actually rather liked that - you could tell they focused entirely on the quality of the port itself. It was also one of the most expensive tasting lists (and commensurately expensive list of bottles), but there's a reason for that, quality-wise. Thankfully, after trying quite a number of ports by the time I made it here, I'd also determined fairly conclusively that I tended to like the mid-range stuff more than the longer-aged, fancier stuff anyway, so I was here specifically to try their LBV and the reserve Tawny, at 8 euro each for a pour. Even nicer: they made me take a third tasting to round it out, the 10-year white, which I did not have to pay for - I can confirm, all three were excellent. Then, being the only customer in the tasting room at the time the whole time I was there, I ended up chatting with the very knowledgeable server while I sat back and tasted them, not just about port, but about wine in general, both Portuguese and American. Great, chill spot. (Then I ended up also buying a bottle of the Tawny reserve for 35 euros, by far the most expensive port I brought back, but entirely worth it.)

The pricing for the tasting flights will look a tad expensive, but the quality is much higher. And the pricings are great if you share your flights. The pours are fairly generous, and port wine is fortified anyway. Three of us shared a six-glass flight for €120, and we were all slightly buzzed by the end! My personal favorite was the 10-year-aged white port. All of the ports were great, and getting to taste a Vintage port, much less two, is always a treat. Small snacks are available, like cheese and charcuterie. I ordered the chocolates for €5 and I would recommend this. It came with tiny white, milk, and dark chocolate squares, perfect for pairing with the different port types and seeing how they all work together. There were enough chocolate squares for all three of us. Our server/guide spoke excellent English and gave great explanations of the wines and answered our questions well. The ambiance is upscale and intimate. The tasting room only has a few tables. I would recommend reservations in advance if possible. Even though there were tourists there, it doesn't have a touristy vibe. And even the tourists there seem to be wine connoisseurs; the type that are going off the beaten path to find special wine experiences. One of my party ended up buying a couple of bottles at the end. This popped up constantly as a popular spot for coffee lovers, so we made a beeline. It has a light and airy Blue Bottle look and vibe. We didn't mind since it reminded us of the Bay Area. Seating on the first floor was limited, but fate allowed us to secure a table at the foot of the stairs up to the mezzanine where the laptoppers hang out. We ordered a Latte and a Cappuccino at 3,5€ each (Photo 8). Both were smoothly brewed and infused seamlessly with steamed milk. They offered a limited selection of baked treats. In need of a nosh, we got a chewy Choco Cookie (Photo 7) and a sweetly puffed Pao de Queijo (Portuguese Cheesebread) (Photo 10) at just 2,5€ each. Both were yummy with the cheesebread particularly satisfying. I wish we could've stayed longer than a half-hour, but the rest of Porto was waiting. As with most restaurants they bring bread without asking and presumably charge if you touch it. Only one server was on duty when I was there so things got a bit slow as more diners arrived for lunch.
