Visited 11 April 2025, normally I have a pretty good experience here but this time I was here I walked into the door and a tall skinny guy greeted me, I thought he said "can I help you find anything?" and I said "nope just looking" and he goes "Yeah you're in a record store" really condescendingly, so if that's how you treat customers then you need to work on your customer service skills. Ever get so disgusted with the guy running the store that you walk out within 2 minutes? Me neither, until I went to vinyl cup records. The counter guy would not leave me alone from the second I walked in the door. He was going on and on about the layout of the store and what am I looking for specific titles, and when I got stand offish he got rude with me really quick. He even started making fun of me to the other customer in the store. I'd just driven 6 hours and worked 4 more, so I was 10 hours past my ability to deal with a jerk like this. He suggested I go to rogue planet, which I did, and found several things. Thanks for steering me away from your business, I'm glad even you know you're an awful person and I shouldn't shop with you. I visited every store in the region on this trip and this is the only store I didn't buy from. I walked out in 2 minutes because I don't give money to people like that. This is a fun little place to stop. It doesn't have good signage & it's upstairs in what appears to be office space. If you're from the generation who actually listened to vinyl records because that's all there was, you'll likely feel nostalgic by a lot of the titles like Michael Jackson Thriller, Def Leppard Pyromania, and Wham! among others. I will not recommend them to anyone. Was looking to sell some records apparently I asked to many questions or they just didn't want to help someone who didn't know a lot about records. Either way they made me feel unwelcome and that I wasn't important enough for them to have to spend any of there time on. That's not how you should make people feel even if you don't own a business. But apparently there so busy that common decency and being courteous to people let alone potential customers isn't worth there time either. Numerous times in my interactions with them they claimed to pay more to pay more then the other businesses in town . I don't know if that's true or not . But paying more doesn't mean that u can treat people especially your customers in a way that makes them feel unwanted. Id rather lose a few pennies then deal with people who have the attitude that they seem to have . read more

One thing that does not make me melancholy is a place where I can find such music that is so wonderfully described in High Fidelity! Vinyl Cup Records, totally hits the spot for me on so many levels! First off the space is wonderful.. Big enough for shows with up to 60 people. Space to move around, and wait for it... They have an incredibly HI-FI Sound and HI-FI style and comfortable listening room! That makes me want to just sit and listen to records in someone else's living room type space. The gal working asked if I wanted to listen to anything and naturally I was like whatever, cause she was playing some rad jazz.. She also offered me a beer! (NOW WE ARE TALKING..) I didn't know how long I was going to be there so I declined, but such a nice thing to offer! She gave me a quick tour of the store and told me a bit about the store. I started checking out the new arrivals and Bam Zappa, Bam Badfinger, Bam the Band, Bam Little Feat.. Bam Bam Bam records I know and love and that get's me pumped up for the rest of the store! The prices were right on the money and there is definitely stuff here for everyone! I dig how the used and new records sections are just in alphabetical order, not put into sections like R&B, Rock, Metal, whatever... It make's the hunter and gather-er in me get excited about the hunt and makes you find stuff you might not normally look for! I took a photo and posted it on Yelp! And what do you know.. Luke the store owner, who I have admired from afar calls the store and asks if I'm still there cause he wanted to come down and say hi and thank me for coming into the store! How cool is that! That does not happen everywhere! Luke is fantastic and super passionate about records, collectors, and his community! To prove this he has rows of records that he rents outs to collectors who have been curating collections to sell! How cool is that! I have never seen anything like that in a record store and I have been to a few! I found a Biff Rose record I have been searching for, for awhile and it was only 10 bucks.. And I also found Nilsson's "Sandman" which I have been looking for a nice copy of forever as well! The Nilsson record was in a row from one of those community collectors... so his fantastic idea is working! I'm super excited to continue to shop here! When I arrived the store was locked with no indication that it was closed. When I called, the owner was rude on the phone, being condescending and antagonizing towards me. He also mentioned that they had put on their Instagram that they had closed early, making the assumption that everyone has social media instead of just writing that they closed early on their sign out front. Also the doors were completely locked when we tried to get to the store and the owner asked, "have you tried pulling on them?" (Obviously we had, that's why we called) the owner then said "Go ahead and write a bad review, we don't want your business anyway." The owner seems like a complete narcissist. read more

The store is on the second floor, sandwiched between two other storefronts. Don't pass this place up just because you didn't immediately see it from the street when passing it. You won't regret taking a look. Prices are competitive, the selection of new and used is great, and the attitudes are welcoming and professional. I needed a gift for the holidays. I had a specific vinyl in mind. Unfortunately, the vinyl wasn't available at multiple stores (this one included), but I told the person helping me look around about it and she immediately offered multiple other locations for me to try to find my album! That's good customer service, and it convinced me to buy my 2nd/3rd choice album from this shop; rather than go to Target or Barnes & Noble for my 1st choice. Let me start by saying I wasn't even aware that this gem even existed. I just felt very nostalgic one day last week as my wife and I are going to see Chicago (the band) soon here in Des Moines, and began going through my small but precious vinyl collection at home. I began listening to some Chicago vinyl, and began wondering where I could find some that I didn't already have. Google is awesome :). I told our daughter, who has an old soul, that I was going to pay Vinyl Cup records a visit and she was excited to tag along. Walking into the shop brought back so many memories of going to local record stores and sorting through albums when I was young in the 70's, and I was so proud to look over and see her flipping through them the way I had. I was in my happy place. The young lady who greeted us on Sunday gave us the lay of the land, and even offered us a beer as we browsed! How awesome is that? And I scored a Chicago album to boot! Full disclosure. I've not stepped foot in this store. My experience comes from a vinyl release preorder. I was given tracking information once a USPS label was created. Eight days later, after no progress was shown on tracking, I emailed the store to ask about order status. The reply from Luke (owner) was that everything had shipped so it's out of their hands and I would have to take it up with the postal service (like that ever helps). I replied that I would give it a few more days but then I would have to ask for a refund and thanked him in advance. He replied with "chill dude" and informed me that my album was held back with others to be signed by the artists. That's great! Helpful information to have. I was in the process of replying to him via email and let him know that and thank him when my phone rang. Yep, it was good old Luke. The owner. He proceeded to tell me that they pride themselves on making customers happy and they're not out to "screw anybody". I tried to reply and let him know we were good and there was no problem but he kept talking over me and hung up on me as he said see ya later. I'm guessing he inherited this business from someone because Luke doesn't conduct himself like someone who built a business from nothing or that it's something to take pride in. What should have been a pleasant experience with a bonus signature turned pretty crappy. read more

The owner, Luke, had a music knowledge that rivals anyone I know and he seems to have a photographic memory of what's in his inventory.
