Ask the Community - Visiting Angels

Does this company do background checks on their aides? Do they have references and employment backgrounds? How are aides matched up with clients, is it random depending on who is on duty, or is there a matching of clients needs and aides skills?

Hi Kris, are you in the Salt Lake area or Davis/Weber area?

Not so amazing if your loved one is on Medicaid. My mother was one of the original residents at…read moreTwin Oaks. Also, one of the most functional. The sales staff would regularly use her to pitch the facility to families shopping around for assisted living facilities. Staff routinely parked themselves in the big recliner in her apartment to chat and relax with a resident who could carry on in-depth, pleasant conversations. Mom was given one of the best rooms at the facility because, at the time, it was barely occupied, and the salesperson wanted to fill the units. In return, Mom did her spend-down with T.O. (thousands of dollars), effectively depleting what savings/resources she had left after the death of my father. Then, as planned, she enrolled in the New Choices Waiver Program, with most of her SS check going to the facility every month, along with her Medicaid reimbursements. Over the next several years, T.O. managed to fill its units, and Mom's one-bedroom apartment began to look like a cash cow occupied by a resident who could not afford to pay the "market" price. The administration will likely claim they gave Mom the first right of refusal, offering to keep her in the unit if she could pay the full fee, which, of course, was impossible. In effect, they evicted her. Worse yet, the so-called studio units they offered as a replacement (which are little more than hospital rooms) were also priced beyond her financial reach and that of most Medicaid clients. Mom's contributions to the facility and her history as a resident were not taken into account. Mom's actual mental health and clinical needs took a back seat to the promise of financial gain. Like everything else in America today, money proved to be the most important consideration. My sister and I were also dragged through a hellish process for months, during which offers were made, then retracted, contradictory and false information was given, and little genuine empathy was offered. At first blush, T.O. looks less institutional and more "homey" than many assisted living facilities. Ironically, there is a cold, unfeeling attitude at its center.

I would recommend Twin Oaks to anyone who is looking to find a home for their loved one. My mother…read morewas a resident there from March 2023 until she passed in September 2024. Mr. & Mrs. Kim have created a wonderful community and the caregivers they have on staff make the community that much more wonderful. Some places I toured before deciding on Twin Oaks felt so cold and sterile; that is definitely not the case with Twin Oaks. You walk into the building and there is such a welcoming and warm environment, it ceases being a building and really does feel like home. The caregivers at Twin Oaks truly care about all of the residents and treat them like they are their own family member; that care also extends to residents' families as I can attest to as I spent the last days/weeks of my mother's life there as an honorary resident. While their primary focus was on my mother, where it most definitely was needed, they also made sure that I was taken care of. Words can never truly convey the immense gratitude I have for everyone at Twin Oaks. You made the last year and a half of my mother's life comfortable and as free of worry as possible.

We went with Sunrise because they claim that they could manage this patient population. Over the next several week it was clear that we made the wrong choose, they where nothing more than a nursing home with locked doors. The CNA were not qualified in memory care as Sunrise had claimed, talking to the state I found out that Sunrise only meets the minimal state requirement to be licensed as a nursing home. To be classified as a dementia unit they are required to have a physician on staff and nurses 24/7. Sunrise does not meet either of those they do not have a physician on staff and only an R.N. 8 hours 5 days a week. After 3 weeks we parted ways, I was called 5 time by security at 1 am because they could not handle my 93 year old mother. I had to sit with her all night until I had to go to work, then on Christmas eve at 4 pm they discharged her again because they did not know how to handle her. We had to take her home, because they did not give us time to find another facility or make any other arrangements. We had to leave all of her furniture, and personal items and pick them up 3 days later. Please kept in mind that somehow security was involved with my moms care not the nursing staff when they were having trouble it was security that called me never the memory unit . Please understand that a dementia unit and memory care are two different units, these memory care places would like you to believe they are the same thing. Beware !!

We thought they were you, the entire experience was a waste of time the pricing They had quoted us. They then said oh our new 2025 pricing is $500 more it was just a very disappointing experience. It looked like a nice place parking was atrocious the elevators trying to get down the floor was impossible. Can't say I would recommend even a tour.

Virtually every visit we've run into an issues ranging from feces all over the bathroom floor, to bumps, bruises and bleeding, to no showers, to lost items, to no cleaning and laundry service. When I've walked the floors after 9 PM, I often can't find a single person at the nurses station (behind the glass enclosure). Walking the halls turns up no employees as well. Each time we notify staff about issues, we get apologies and promises for improvement. However, things never get any better. Legacy has had leadership issues and turnover at the top levels. If you're looking for a newer facility with nice furniture and building amenities, this is a good option if you can afford it. If you're looking for a facility where your loved one will be happy, look elsewhere.

Also, many thanks for sending the wonderful aids who were the best "fit" for our dad, his personality, and his medical needs. They charge more for the clients and in return keep all the money, therefore the employees make minimum wage; who actually do all the work doing very difficult tasks throughout the day. I am disappointed with them because they are suppose to be a "Care team"-but don't know how to show it to employees or there clients. They don't keep in touch with past clients who had to discontinue with them due to illness. I think that's unprofessional if they would like that client back.
