I was in town to visit my mother and we decided to try Vitale's for dinner. It is a very unassuming place, has the feel of an old time diner. You don't go here for the ambience (2/5) or for the service (3/5). I ordered the spaghetti w meat sauce and meatballs. I have to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised : ) The meatballs (4/5) were large and tasty, substantial, and perfectly cooked. The sauce was dark, rich, sweet and quite good (3.5/5). Went there after graduation. The place seemed pretty old but it was clean and the service was great. Front counter lady was kinda cranky but the waitress made up for it. A very pleasant surprise that a young waitress was so attentive. The lasagna itself that I ate was really good but the sauce wasn't for me. I'd go there and try a different dish. Tried this while visiting WIU. We did delivery so I do realize food quality goes down with delivery than fine in. The stuffed pizza crust and topping were great, however the over seasoned oregano on top was completely unnecessary this should not be assumed. The fettuccine Alfredo was so bland that we had to add a lot of salt and pepper. Not too many options in macomb as we will go back to dine in. read more

Fantastic! I have tried to copy several of their recipes but their spaghetti and meatballs with meat-sauce can't be duplicated. Their vodka sauce is very popular and the carbonara was the best comfort food I have had this side of Italy. Please understand this is a family restaurant and the adult children have grown up in Macomb but la nonna is from Sicily. Expect an authentic dining experience. read more

Its a locally owned and owners work there and they are from Sicily, very nice and friendly people in general. The best secret in Macomb is Vitale's! I've had Italian everywhere and this is hands down my favorite. Everything is always piping hot and fresh. I would recommend anything on the menu -- pasta dishes are huge. Pick your pasta and pick your sauce. Personal faves include Pavarotti, pesto cream, arrabbiata and alfredo on top of bow tie pasta. The evening started off with the "new" waitress not knowing what came on the different salads or what was being served on the salad bar...she had to go ask...no worries we all have to learn. I ordered a Italian sausage sandwich, plain, dry, add cheese. our food arrived and it was prepared correctly.... but I noticed that my sandwich tasted odd...i asked the waitress to take it away and bring something different...a meatball sandwich plain. a few minutes later a lady (she does not introduce herself) walks up and asked who had the sausage sandwich...I told her it was me...she asked what was wrong with it...I told her it tasted odd....(another lady at the table had one also)...she asked the other lady if her sandwich tasted odd....she said no...then she turns to me and says...you will have to pay for this sandwich because there is nothing wrong with it....and you will have to pay for the meatball sandwich as well....but we will wrap the italian sausage sandwich up for you to take home...maybe someone else will like it. At this point I stood up looked the lady in the face and said "are (bleeping) kidding me? I will not pay for that sandwich and I no longer want the meatball sandwich" The lady said fine....and walked away. At no point did she apologise or express any kind of remorse or sense of wrong doing. My party finish their meal...we all discussed never returning to this restaurant and how awful the food was. when the waitress returned with our check i asked her who the lady was....and was told it was the owner's daughter (middle aged heavy set dark haired). We double checked that the check was correct and that she did not charge us for the sandwich...she did not charge me for it. Easily the best pizza and Italian food in Macomb, perhaps in a 50 mile radius. The meat sauce is one of the best I've tasted bar none, and the pizza rivals many places in Chicago. Well, I wanted to really like this place, since the reviews seemed to be mostly positive. But it's not great. When we first arrived, they were pretty busy, but they weren't the friendliest of greeters. The lady who is either the owner or manager isn't pleasant at all. Maybe having a bad night. She should probably stay away from the customers. And they don't take names to prioritize who comes in first, so a couple of parties that came in after us actually got seated before we did (our parties were similar sizes). So that's just bad management. The server was fine, though it took quite a while for her to come by and get our drink order and greet us. I ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce and meatballs, my son had lasagna and my wife had the Pavarotti pasta. My son and I both agreed their meat/marinara sauce is way too sweet and their meatballs could use a bit more garlic and herb (and maybe a bit more spice). My wife liked the Pavarotti pasta-no complaints there. She even thought the grapes added something nice (which is unusual for her). Accustomed to Chicago Italian food, this place is a far cry, in reality. Though the effort is appreciated. Atmosphere? Needs much better lighting! It's a little depressing. Something as simple as some candles at the tables, or those little LED lamps, might go a long way. And dispose of the paper place mats. This isn't Denny's. I decided to give vitales a. Second try for pizza even though they messed up my Last one. BIG MISTAKE! They made me a thin crust instead. So I called to explain and as soon as I got on the phone with an owner they literally were huffing and puffing and offered for me to bring the pizza back and pay for a new one! I explained that seems unfair but they disagreed. Finally I decided I would take the deal,. I asked that the woman please ask the chef to put extra sausage on because last time there was very little, her response was "I'm not telling my brother how to make the pizza! You do it!" So I tried talking to the chef, thinking there's no way anyone could be ruder than she was. Wrong again! He explained to me that there is NO WAY he would ever have put a small amount of sausage on and I'm making it up, all the while he is also berthing very heavy and clearly uninterested and irritated with me. His final comment was, there's no point to this conversation good bye! Terrible customer service, especially when it's such a. Small town you would think you would be nicer because word travels fast! I'll admit, I was not the biggest fan of vitale's the first few trips here. The tomato sauce was too sweet, the alfredo was too garlicky, so on. But then my mom introduced me to her favorite dish...the farlenese. Sooo good!!! It is virtually the only thing I order. So far I've tried the eggplant parmigiana (very good, taste like homemade fried eggplant and sauce), the pasta carbonara is also very good ( the sauce taste made from scratch, I want to try adding garlic to it, as its on the bland side for me), and the Italian beef sub with extra cheese (I want to add more peppers and you should ask for "au jus," the beef juice to dip it in.) I was in Macomb for work and saw this place looked pretty good. The service was great and the food was very good as well. They have a small salad bar but the choice of pastas and pizza is where you should spend your time. I ordered pasta from the "Specialties" section- the Arrabbiatta. You could tell the sauce was freshly made. I love Vitale's! It's one of the nicer restaurants in town and so good! My personal favorite is their fried ravioli! We've dined in, taken out, and gotten deliver. The food is amazing and the service is nice. They also have gluten free pizza for those with allergies. The only negative thing I must add is it is a little pricey and on some nights packed full! This has always been my favorite pizza place in Macomb! The owners have been at this location for years and the pizza still has the same wonderful taste as it did when I was a teenager. The owners and staff are always friendly and kind, often waving to me from the kitchen when I come in to pick up my pizza. They are authentic Italian, and in a small town like Macomb, that's a big deal because it lets you get a taste of the big city without leaving town. I come here every chance I get! read more

We have had their pasta before and though it was pretty good, it is a little high - like Olive Garden prices. We opted for something more in our price range so we tried the pizza this time. The pizza was GREAT! The sauce tastes homemade (not sure if it is or not) but has VERY good spices and flavor, better than any I have had anywhere else. Perfect flavor. We had an appetizer basket, 2 sodas, a medium pizza with bacon, ham, pepperoni, sausage and extra cheese and our bill came to just under 22 bucks. (I recommend the extra cheese if you like a fair amount of cheese, otherwise they don't use enough cheese for our liking). We were very pleased and will definitely go back. This is one of those places I would have turned around and walked back out if there were other options that day. It was a holiday and we were extremely limited on restaurants. We went on Memorial Day 2015. There were only two places in town that stayed open besides the fast food joints. When we walked in, their last customers just left - this was around 7pm. All four of their wait staff were sitting in the back booth by the door. We stood there for a few minutes before being acknowledged to let us know to sit anywhere we would like. There was a sea of dirty tables, no customers, but they were sitting down and gabbing. The table we picked was dirty as well, but the least one next to the front window. The windows were absolutely filthy and needed washed. The window sill had so much dust and dead bugs it was disgusting. It also had what looked to be a bullet hole in it. By the looks of it, they had not been clean for I don't know how long. The floor was dirty. Yet, they were all sitting on their backsides not doing anything. Our waiter came to the table and almost everything we asked about, they were out of! We started with some appetizers. Well, we only received partial orders of our breaded cauliflower and breaded mushrooms, because they were out. They did have a full order of mozzarella sticks, which were very good...it was the ONLY thing that was good. They substituted our other items with the breaded ravioli, which was completely bland. Their "salad bar" is an absolute joke. They should be ashamed for calling it that. There is barely anything on it, it's a small little cart type thing, and you can basically get a house salad from this. The fact that they charge for this, is asinine! Now, we are at an "Italian" restaurant, but they don't have an ricotta cheese...there goes our first choice, lasagna. Also, many other choices because many Italian dishes have ricotta! I can't remember now how many things we inquired about, but they didn't have it. We decided on Calzones. We should have went with the pizza because that probably would have been decent. The Calzones start a $9 without ANY toppings included in the price. I think they charged a $1.50 per topping. So, a $9 calzone without any toppings that come with it, quickly becomes almost a $20 item!!! We asked our waiter if there was a decent amount of cheese in it. He told us it's a "regular" amount. I am a fan of cheese, especially good cheese. Well, my husband and I made the terrible mistake of asking for extra, not double. Our son just had the amount that comes with it. When the calzones arrive, they are absolutely SWIMMING in olive oil! That right there, was enough to make my stomach turn, but I decided to try it. I am not exaggerating when I say this, it took me FIVE MINUTES to get the first bite down. There was so much cheese that it almost choked me and it got stuck in my throat. I couldn't separate it in my mouth. I have never ever had this problem in my life and I love cheese. I ordered four toppings in mine, and you could barely see them. All you could see was cheese and a standing pool of olive oil. My son, who didn't order an extra cheese, had a ridiculous amount of it. I think our waiter was afraid to say anything to the cook (could have possibly been the owner), because we informed him how awful it was and he said: "Is there anything else I can get you." He didn't offer to have it remade, didn't offer a discount, or to go speak with the cook. We barely ate anything and normally we take home doggie bags. This order was over $70 for 3 calzones and 3 appetizers - two of which was half an order because they didn't have any. I was livid at the price of this bill! If it would have been good food, I'd have no problem paying this price. I felt as if I was robbed when I left this place. This was my first and last time I will ever step foot in that place. I have no idea how they have such a high rating, but the dirtiness of the place alone is enough of a reason for me not to return. If the dining area looks like this, what in the world is in that kitchen?! Factor in the prices for what we didn't get or couldn't have, I would have more of a satisfaction to donating it. read more
