My hope is that under your leadership, no other family will suffer the nightmare mine did. In April 2025, my 87-year-old father died at home, not peacefully, but in pain, calling my name, without the comfort VITAS promised. We were assured VITAS would deliver compassionate, round-the-clock hospice care. Instead, they gave us a generic binder, no care plan, no medication list, and no guidance. A nurse arrived hours late and said morphine would come in the morning. It didn't. It took 2.5 days before my father received a small dose, just enough for a child. There was no case manager assigned to us. I was passed from person to person, begging for help as my dad deteriorated. VITAS falsely reported five nurse visits to Medicare, none of which occurred. The only nurse who showed up and called the situation "appalling" slipped out the door and left me alone while my brother and husband ran from Walgreens to Walgreens, trying to find the morphine VITAS failed to provide. My dad died while they were gone. His last moments were spent in fear and pain, not surrounded by his sons as he deserved. Even your own staff admitted this should never have happened. I have reported this to Medicare, Texas Health & Human Services, the Joint Commission, the OIG, the Texas Attorney General, and more. I have all the records, call logs, photos, and eyewitnesses. This review is not written out of anger. It's written out of heartbreak. Families need to know that not all hospice care is created equal, and that VITAS, despite its name, failed to meet even the most basic standards of human dignity. Please, Mr. Wherley, take action. I'm on Vita's Home Hospice Care and it works for me. My attendant Aisha, is professional, organize, efficient, friendly and truly does empathize with her patients. She very friendly and goes out of her way to answer any questions I might have. She makes sure I'm comfortable with what she has to do and I have gotten used to being cleaned and bathed. I wish Vita's had more Aisha's on staff. She is an asset and a very valuable piece of this organization. I hope they recognize and treated Aisha as a valued employee. I want to write a review for the excellent serivce given to my mom and to me from all the staff at VITAS Hospice. A couple of people are exceptional. Mom's nurse is Eliabeth (Betty) Smiley. She is so professional, kind and helpful to me with instructions to help me care for my mom. Betty has gone beyond the call of duty always even paying for some items from her own pocket that mom needed. She is very by the book and professional when changing out the catheter which I believe has helped mom from getting any infections. She even purchased some house slippers for mom's birthday. I can't thank her enough. Writing this review is all I know to do to show how much she means to us. I also want to write a review for the excellent care from mom's aide, Mary Richardson. She always gives 100% to her patients! She makes exceptions for mom not being able to hear and she will tap mom's leg or arm to communicate with her. She is so loving, kind and easy with mom. Never rushes her to walk always taking her time. She even goes beyond the call of duty with cleaning up after mom's bath. Mary will wipe down my glass shower walls so they do not spot. How nice is that! I can truly say that VITAS has two STARS in Betty and Mary and they should be awarded the STARS for exceptional work. I have grown to love both of these ladies. Stay clear of this company! They are the biggest joke I've ever seen. They just up and left us to care for my father after 4 days and zero notice. I highly recommend this service to anyone in the situation of end of Life. My mom unfortunately passed away last month, but their services helped so much. From the nurses to the people of providing the medical equipment. I want to give a special thanks to Reverend Alberto he was great in preparing my mom. Rev. Alberto was a great fit for my mom since she didn't speak English and he was bilingual. He is keeping in touch with us to make sure we're doing ok. Words cannot describe how much our family appreciates him. Normally Hispanics do not believe in hospice care but please believe me is one of the best decisions we've ever made. 1 year ago my mom was evaluated by Vitas hospice in the hospital. My mom wanted hospice at home so she tried it but had to return back to the hospital, this time Vitas recommended in patient hospice at their facility to "stabilize her medications" so that she could transition to another facility. I asked several times what did "stabilize her medications" mean? But got no clear answer, only, we need to find the right medications for her. It gave us hope in that she would get better to live in the new facility. Instead, the second she got there, they stopped all of her meds, took her oxygen away, sedated her so that she was not responsive and put a catheter in her. She passed 3 days later. If you're thinking about hospice for a loved one, get all the facts before you make that decision. There was something very wrong about the process that my mom and my family went through. read more

VITAS OVERDOSED MY DAD & He never recovered and died. This company needs to be shut down. I will continue to tell my story so that this doesn't happen to your loved one. My advice is to do your research before allowing anyone to take care of your loved one. Vitas took care of my Dad after being diagnosed with cancer. He was I'll but was able to take care of himself like walking, bathing, feeding and would get out occasionally to go to church or see friends. He had a pain pump and needed the bag of pain medication changed. The nurse came to our home to change the bag and programmed the pump incorrectly, giving him 50mg of Dilaudid per hour instead of 15mg per hour. They overdosed him for 4 days until they realized their mistake. My Dad never walked or talked again. He no longer knew who I was. He never recovered and passed away 10 days later. They took his voice, his mind and his life. read more

Hello, this isn't the normal recommendation most people would post but, i think its a very valuable one. My closest friend and roommate ever has decided to go on hospice care and pass on to the next life rather than struggle with his terminal ailing health. Vitas Hospice Care has been soooo very helpful, friendly, efficient and caring in this decision. One of their nurses even personally delivered pain medication to us when we couldn't get it ourselves. AWESOME service....!!!! 10 Star Service...!!! I have never seen how hospice works and Vitas has made it almost effortless with nursing staff, a traveling notary, rental equipment like hospital bed, bedside tray table, patient supplies etc. And, all billed for us to medicare. I am very disappointed with the care my mom received from Vitas. They do not communicate with each other. Upon calling the office with medical questions, every time the question or message was misconstrued or never responded to. Most importantly, all this hospice knows to do is push the morphine instead of trying to help solve the problem we called about. I explicitly told them from the beginning that my mom wasn't giving up & didn't just want to be put on medicines to make her sleep all the time. They never did any physical therapy and they made it difficult to get the extra care she deserved. Do not trust them with your loved one. I had doubts from the very beginning when we first met with them. It was all a sales pitch & they never stood by what they said they would do. My mom's nurse seemed very unprofessional to me. She would do her medicines but as I went back to check them she had done them wrong because she didn't go by the list. Her & the whole of Vitas made this time harder to endure. After my mom passed, it seems as though her nurse & rest of the team have forgotten all about her. The only ones checking on us are the Chaplin, social worker & child life specialist. Nick Westfall has some very poor employees that hang up on some someone. The employee when asked to speak to a manager to have equipment picked up after 3 days after mothers passing. The Employee stated OMG no I will not and hung up on us. We have had nothing but issues trying to get someone to come out for care during the last 1.5 years of being on Hospice. Some nurses would just show up without taking any reading and not looking patient over. I would highly recommend someone look into this at Vitas. I would not want another family member associated with this Hospice company. I would definitely look for other Hospice companies. The company does not seem to understand that some of their lack for performance causes families unneeded emotional distress. read more

2019-2020 - My mom was in kidney and heart failure. Lewisville Medical City in Lewisville, TX. The social worker recommended Vitas to us. Vitas's representative at the hospital sold the program and then he disappeared. (Scam). We signed papers for her to be in hospice at home. They sent outdated medical equipment and I had to send items back. One young man that worked for them finally said he would find a new bed and deliver it. The other thing was that they only sent one guy out to deliver and one guy put an old bed together wrong. They were inattentive and had no relationship or customer service skills. The nurses/staff members that were assigned to my mother for physical therapy were absolutely horrible. It was a constant battle with them. Fortunately, I work from home so I was able to observe their behavior. The supervisors assigned to the physical therapy personnel were shady and one, in particular, would call me only after I reported her because she never showed up. Once she told me that she was driving in Little Elm (20 minutes away) and couldn't get cell phone/internet service and I informed her and her employer not to ever schedule her. 24-hour on-call nurses were a joke. When they came, some acted as though we were a bother to them. The questions they asked over the phone were to deter them from having to make the visit! At one point, the nurse supervisor and I had a screaming match. The heart medication that was given in an IV bag was supposed to be administered by them. Because of their lackadaisical attitudes, I took on the responsibility. There was only one nurse that was on her game and she was the last nurse that came to see my mom. She dispatched her to be rushed to the hospital where she died 6 days later. PLEASE FIND SOME PLACE ELSE FOR YOUR LOVED ONES!!! I cannot believe I didn't think to write them sooner. read more

This is the worst experience I have ever had with a company. Vitas refused to take care of my wife's cellulitis leg. It became infected by maggots. Still nothing. No reports were made, nothing special was done. Her leaking legs smelled like death and still no action by Vitas. I complained daily with no results. They sent no supplies and I had to go and purchase bandages myself. This was the definition of negligence. I called my insurance company and they immediately reported Vitas and told me to get a new provider. As a final kick in the teeth somebody called the Dallas adult service center and claimed I was abusive and my wife of 50 years should be put in a facility. I was curious about the ratings after Vitas and decided to take a quick look. My mother was a patient of Vitas in November of 2007 to January of 2008 due to her breast cancer diagnosis. I was not surprised to see the one star reviews on Google, which I will write a review on there momentarily, and wanted to drop a review on Yelp as well. Unfortunately, in 2007 and 2008 there was no Yelp and Google reviews were hardly looked at during that time. When my Mom was originally enrolled into the Vitas program she was only supposed to receive palliative care and not hospice care. There are two distinct programs and my Mom's oncologist ordered the palliative care program. Vitas does not follow doctor's orders because they immediately enrolled Mom into their hospice care program. I was told by Vitas' social worker that I needed to be more considerate of my mother's feelings when I brought up this point with them. When my Mom was able to come home for a bit she had a urinary catheter and it took us two days to get a nurse to come change it. Mom was in incredible pain and I had to beg the nurse at the office to send someone to come change it. On the second day my Dad, who was also ill at the time, got on the phone with them and said "What will it take for y'all to come change a urinary catheter? Just tell me and it will be done. We have been calling for two days and she has had the catheter in her for about a month." The kicker here is when we were transferred to the Vitas inpatient hospice facility. No water was given to her, no food, she was never turned, and no blood pressure taken. There was not even an IV given to keep her hydrated. The rooms were we staying in were adjoined rooms and there was another patient next door to us. She would yell for help and nobody would come. I would have to get up and leave my mother to figure out what was wrong with the other patient and then get the nurse to come help this poor lady. The kicker during our stay was I kept asking why no IVs were given, water, turning, anything and the nurses would just tell me that is the hospice way. No pain meds were given as far as I remember. The nurse left my Mom's file open while she was out of the room so I took a look. There was a note from the primary nurse that stated "Do not talk with the family about care. Talk with the sister (my aunt, my Mother's sister) in San Antonio they are more realistic." My mother signed a form stating to not give out information to her family members. So, Vitas also violates HIPPA laws. Please do not use this facility. Your family members deserve so much better than what Vitas can do. They are a money hungry organization and should be out of business. Do your research of other well deserving organizations. read more

This was one of worst experience we had. The nurse was very good. However, their DME service was the WORST. 3 week ago, their DME delivered the bed to my mom's place. Instead of placing the bed where she wanted to them to put the guy made my 78 old 5ft fragile mother to move the existing day bed so he can put the bed where he thought it was appropriate. He just stood and watched her struggle to move the existing day bed. She should have called me and I would have cancelled the VITAS hospice. Then today, we had to wait all day for Vitas DME department to call us and pick up the equipment. The guy calls 4PM and tells us he can be here to pick up the bed and all the equipment in an hour. After 3 hours of waiting, we call the VITAS 24X7 number we are told that guy actually reported and already picked up the bed and equipment. Now, 8PM we will have to travel back to apartment next week and wait all over again for them to call and come pick up the bed and equipment. VITAS HME/DME is the worst. Their nurse worked hard. But the rest are uncaring and irresponsible. Actually LIE on New Year's Eve so he can go home and celebrate while putting my family in limbo and having to travel back to town. read more

We used and fired two other hospice organizations in DFW before hiring Vitas. They came over ASAP and did an evaluation and moved my wife to their in patient facility at Baylor All Saints which was marvelous. The nurses there are truly wonderful. I would have given them 5 stars but the doctor there said my wife didn't qualify for in patient and was going to be sent home the next day. She slipped into a coma and passed that next day. I am a 63 year old Licensed Professional Counselor and a former Geriatric Care Manager in Dallas, TX. Vitas care for my 91 year old mother has been EXCEPTIONAL. They have been extremely attentive to her needs and wants. Her quality of life has steadily increased since getting on hospice care with Vitas. Her pain is under control and she stays comfortable with their consistent oversight by the nurse. The key to getting quality care from any health provider is consistent communication with the provider's staff regarding your family's needs and desires. Vitas has responded positively in every situation that has come up. I recommend them highly and will use them again if the need arises. read more

I cannot thank VITAS enough for all the loving care they gave my Mother in the last few weeks of her life. They were there every step of the way. Mom did not have Cancer she was 96 and starting to show signs of her age. And suffered from congenitive heart failure. It cost us NOTHING and the amount of care they gave her was like a million dollars to me. They provide medical equipment, drs , nurses, social workers and transportation all at NO charge. In her final week of life she was in there hospital wing. These are the most AMAZING , caring people you will ever meet. They explain ,hug, and take care of the families as much as they do the patients. I cannot tell you enough good things about VITAS if you are looking for a service such as this PLEASE pick VITAS you will never be sorry. THANK YOU VITAS for all you did for ALL of us and for giving my Mother the dignity she deserved. This is the worst hospice company!!! My father came home on hospice 4 days ago and the care he is receiving is so bad it's almost like they want him to die the quicker the better. Absolutely NOTHING has gone the way they told us it would go. Originally we were told he would receive 24 hr care the first 24hrs to teach my mom how to care for him, which has still not been done! My husband and I went to see him the first night and he was reading, conversing and alert within 12hrs when the day nurse came on her shift we got a call from my mom crying saying the hospice dr came to evaluate him and said he only had days to 2weeks til he passed they told me he would be on continuous care and every so many days they would continue to appeal request 24hr care. That day he was so out of it he was a zombie we went to check on him felt he was being over medicated we requested he not be given morphine every 3 hrs he is NOT in pain ! The day nurse was a horrible person who lacked the ability to be compassionate after I insinuated they were over medicating him a nurse came by and said since I no longer wanted him to be given morphine she said he is no longer acute IT IS A MIRACLE, HE HAS BEEN HEALED!! He was only a zombie when the day nurse was caring for him when his nurse came on the next shift it was a contacted employee and my mom called and said a Veritas employee came by and removed the last 72hrs of medical notes so now my mom has not been taught how to and what meds to give didn't know how to do his breathing treatments and the person that was caring for him had nothing to refer to cuz all notes were removed. Also as far a the comfort kit goes it was all mixed in with all the other meds and at midnight they delivered another bottle of morphine and he hadn't been home for 24 hrs since I approached them with my concerns they are now sending people who can't give meds didn't tell mom what to give him oh and during the days he was never turned yesterday when mom was helping him we noticed bed sores all over back side which was never seen because he was turned or bathed we had no supplies to treat sores called veritas at 6pm and no one came until around 11pm and showed up with ONE bandage - DO NOT USE THIS HOSPICE COMPANY THEY TELL YOU WHATEVER YOU WANT TO HEAR AND AFTER HIRING THEM THOSE THINGS ARE NOT DONE! read more

DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE! Horrible Horrible Service!!! They refused the families order's to not give my grandmother morphine. We left one day and she was talking fine and came back the next day and she looked like a mummy. We were told that they were there to give us a break in case we had to go shopping or to get some rest. We specifically told the Supervisor NOT to give her morphine. It's way to strong for her amd because she was still very lucid we knew it wasn't time for it. After the 1st nurse was relieved we found out later after going through her file (which she left) that the supervisor okay'ed them to open her hospice pack and to start administering morphine. So we didn't know they were giving her morphine for 3 day's bit by bit. We walked in one day and my grandmother looked like a mummy. We asked them if they gave her any drugs and they LIED. My cousin is a registered nurse and she found the morphine. It took 24 hour's for it to finally wear off and she still isn't the same. The nurse also spent all of her time playing games on her IPad. She NEVER checked her blood pressure and didn't give her any of the medicine the doctor provided. She only flipped her over after I complained and we asked her to leave. It seems like they were speeding up her death, they never gave her juice or any type of food. They daid she told them she wasn't hungry. But how was that if she COULDN'T TALK because she was so high off the morphine! They threw out all of her pain medication so now she's sitting here with no meds and she hasn't been changed all night. They basically send old people who can't properly care for the patient and doesn't care about the families wishes. AVOID THESE PEOPLE AT ALL COST! READ THE HIDDEN REVIEWS. I recently placed my sister on Vitas Hospice and was amazed at how professional everyone was. There are no words kind enough to express my family's gratitude for the love, compassion, and support we rec'd over the last 3 weeks from Vitas Healthcare. My family and I have been so blessed to have an amazing group of people who love what they do so much to make what we went through bearable and even pleasant at times. From the HME delivery driver, to the AC, to the CC nurses and to the administration that approved equipment and services my sister needed even before she was a Vitas patient, I THANKED THEM from the bottom of my heart. My aunt was recently placed on hospice with VITAS. I can't thank them enough for everything they did for my aunt and our family. I personally stayed up all night with my cousin and the hospice nurse. He was very kind and answered any and all questions we had. The nurse made me feel comfortable throughout everything and I could tell he truly cared about his job and what he does. Terrible experience. Employees are arrogant and at times argumentative. Slow to provide supplies and medications. One would think that someone would know the difference between liquid soap and lotion - no they do not. A person put liquid soap on my loved one's body and did not even know they were not using lotion. My relative died without the benefit of morphine and the staff blamed it on paperwork. My firsthand experience with this company is having nurses that slept at night when there was supposed to be unacceptable. The TX Dept, of Aging will tell you there was no nurse that gave morphine, but to have a great weekend free of calls, the nurse had ME ONLY give him morphine every 1/2 hr. for 2 days to check off for the nurse on Monday. They did absolutely nothing of what they said they would from their booklet including grief support. Chaplains should not be taking widows to bedroom while husband lies dead in other room. THIS IS INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR AND PEOPLE NEED TO BE MADE AWARE OF THIS!!!!! read more

DO NOT use this company at all. When we met at the hospital my son-in-law & I were told they would provide 24/7 care for my daughter who was loosing her battle with cancer. We were told there would be a nurse at the house at 7 pm when we got home with her...a nurse showed up at midnight & stayed an hour then left. At 7 am the next morning her nurse...Sharon...showed up & immediately took over my daughter's care. Sharon was very loving...caring & compassionate towards my daughter. She got her medication changed & made her very comfortable for the remainder of her life. There was supposed to be a nurse come that evening at 7 pm...I received a call at 4 pm from Laura informing me that they had no coverage for that evening. I was very upset to say the least. She told me there would be coverage for the next few days. Me & my son-in-law split the shift of sitting with my daughter that night. The next morning Sharon returned & we were finally able to get some rest. Sharon not only took great care of my daughter but she also encouraged us & consoled me & my son-in-law. To say the least Sharon was a God-sent. My daughter passed away between 6 & 6:30 that evening...the nighttime nurse showed up a little before 7 pm & was very rude to my other daughter as well as removing my daughter's necklace without permission. I would never recommend this place to anyone...not if you truly care about your loved ones. This is the worst ran company I have had any dealings with at all. If you can't fulfill your promises then you should not make them. The only exception to this statement is her nurse Sharon. She deserves a raise as well as a bonus for her outstanding care & compassion. When you are promised continuous care that is what you should get. This is already a very difficult time & you don't need it being made harder..it should be made easier. This company cannot & will not fulfill that promise. The only thing I have left to say is you reap what you sow...God will hold you accountable for the way you treat people. Can you live with that??? read more
