    Salt n Pepper Squid. Delicious!

Authentic Vietnamese? Then search no further as Vnam delivers delicious Vietnamese food! Without a doubt! It is definitely worth venturing a little bit further north from the Northern Quarter for this hidden gem, and on first appearance it appears to be another run of the mill small takeaway/cafe with a little bit of seating, but do not let this fool you. It's worth the visit! We were a group of 6, and late on a Wednesday evening, getting a table was not an issue, and it's BYOB, so after a quick trip to the local for a few bottles of wine, we were set to order! I ordered Thit Lon Nuong (pork skewers) for a starter, which were delicious! They were marinated pork belly with shallots and spring onion, and fantastic to quench the appetite. For the main, I ordered Muc Chien Gion (Salt n Pepper Squid) - mainly due to the fact I have a thing for squid at the moment, and wanted to compare to other places I had visited. The squid was battered and fried with salt and pepper with spring onions and chillies sprinkled on top, and accompanied by egg fried rice. The batter didn't take anything away from the flavour of the squid, and it was still quite chewy, which I liked! The salt, pepper and spices added great flavouring with a nice kick. Overall very tasty!

So I pass this place quite frequently on the bus. Eons ago I had purchased a voucher from good ol Groupon and happened to find it just by chance a week before it expired. The place is very pokey and tiny so It felt full to the brim the entire time. On arrival we submitted our vouchers. For starters I chose the soft shell crab followed by seafood broth. This place does not serve alcohol but offers you to bring your own. Next to us a arrogant male ordered something that was not even on the menu then demanded that some rice was made immediately afterwards. The waiters and chefs accommodated this without asking any questions which reflected their patience and quality of service. The soft crab shell was delicious I could have eaten ten. The soup itself was just ok.. the broth was tasty but there was not much of the seafood and I was not keen on the thin noodles. Overall there was not a lot of choice on the menu and I wish I had known about the alcohol..something they should.advertise more clearly. It was ok I just was not wowed enough to return.

After popping into The Mustard Tree nearby, I found myself in serious need of lunch in an area of the city I'm pretty unfamiliar with - Ancoats. Having eaten at Saigon Lotus (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/saigon-lotus-manchester) late last year, I decided to try Vnam as it came recommended and I wanted to compare. There were no other customers inside when I arrived, but it didn't take too long until a few came in for their Meal Deal for something from their set menu and a drink (£6.95 or £7.95 depending on what dish you order). I decided on their Beef Pho Bo (noodle soup), which arrived not too long after I ordered in a huge bowl, complete with a small plate of coriander, bean sprouts and chillies. To be honest I preferred Saigon Lotus' pho, but it was still tasty, filling and great value for money. You do feel healthy and satisfied after Vietnamese food. Service was friendly and efficient so if you're in the area for lunchtime, it'd be a decent choice.

Went to Vnam with a group of friends and had a good time and good meal. As a group we basically shared a couple of the sharing platters (and someone had some summer rolls). Was just easier to order a platter. (Plus some prawn crackers). We got the BBQ one and the salt and pepper one. Overall tasted good - hoped for a bit more salt and pepper flavour on the salt and pepper platter but it all tasted good. All a nice mixture of squid, chicken, prawns, tofu. The Vietnamese prawn crackers came alongside the starters. The prawn crackers tasted just like standard Chinese prawn crackers - almost as if they came from a packet. Never had Vietnamese prawn crackers before but expected similar to Thai prawn crackers with a bit more flavour added to them, maybe even some chilli heat?? For the main, we all picked our own dish. Plus ordered some rice and pak choi veg. I went for the Banh Xeo (savoury pancakes). I have had this before and know that its a tricky thing to make. Last time I had it, the "batter" was not thin enough so it was a bit doughy/soggy. But I know how good it can be - the first ever time having it, it was delicious and flavoursome. The savoury pancakes here in Vnam tasted good. Maybe not 5/5 good but there were crispy. I went for the prawn and pork one. Next time I am here I am going for that squid one. I ordered my pancake without coriander, as it sometimes comes with it (as do many things in Vietnamese food), and this was no problem. The service was good. And even though there was just one waitress, once we were ready to order we didn't have to wait too long and the food didn't take too long either. Please note if you go it is BYOB (Bring your own booze) - there is an off license nearby.

Second visit and photos to follow ... A beautiful iced peach tea while perusing my menu ... A delightful light summer roll with peanut and chilli sauce was like today's early spring'roll' appearance ... Very welcome and fresh . Then spicy beef salad .. A meal in itself ! Flavours of fennel mint and oh my goodness ... How do they make salad taste so rich and tasty. This is salad to change the eating habits of a nation Jamie !! ;-) Barbecue pork fillet with rice and beef and pork noodle soup for the main event .. You can eat tons of Vietnamese food and still feel light because the flavours are so fresh. Lime, coriander, spring onion, and fish garlic and chilli sauce as accompanying flavours meant our chopsticks were flying like a deranged knitting pattern granny the night before Christmas Eve :-) All Thai or Chinese food fans should try Vnam. In fact ... NO ... everyone should.

After travelling around Vietnam last summer I recently had a craving for some Vietnamese cuisine. This place is a little off the beaten track but easy enough to find and certainly sorted out my cravings. I opted for the Lemongrass Pork to start and the Spicy Beef & Pork Pho for main. Both dishes were outstanding and the taste and smells took me back to my travels. I would recommend this place to anyone. Close enough to the real deal.

I must endeavour to find a cookbook and rediscover the lost art of knowing exactly what you are eating. That said, when food tastes as good as it does from Lahori Kebabish I'd just say put the whisk and chopping board away my friends. I don't think its been here very long but me and my friends discovered this the other week - we were cruising around in my friend's car looking for somewhere we could grab some food. You see, after a few bad run ins with waiting forever for home delivery, we prefer to take matters into our own hands. Lahori Kebabish is pretty good value for money - for under a tenner, you get three different curries plus loads of pilau rice etc. With cheap prices comes mediocre tastes but we were all plesantly surprised. We'll definitely be trying here again for the next film night - good food to share/ mix and match.

It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside the decor is modern and clean and the service is quick, even quicker if you're purchasing the faster items. Kebabish also delivers, but only until midnight so eat before you drink! Cheap and good value, especially as it's BYOB.

While this is not a 24-7 location, they are open between 5 am and midnight, which is reasonable, they also have a drive-thru. It can get very busy on a match-day at the Etihad, with many fans liking to come in before and after the game, admittedly I've only ever visited this McDonald's on a matchday, and the staff do try their best to deal with demand quickly, even at busy periods, which is nice to see. I do find the inside to be a little small, based on how busy this place can get, it would be great to see this store modernised to look more like their restaurants in the city centre, to become easier on the eye, and have more seating, as it can be very difficult to grab a table. Pricing seems to be similar to other McDonald's locations in Manchester, the only difference being they don't charge extra for lettuce here (As of April 2023), which is a bonus. The food standards are OK, you're never going to get the best food in the world from McDonald's, but it met their standards for sure. I ordered my usual Quarter Pounder with cheese and medium fries. The fries were hot (albeit a little bland), but my burger was fine apart from the presentation. (My burger was served in the regular burger box, despite not having a bun, making it hard to eat, rather than the white tray they normally use.) PRO TIP: If you're gluten-free, and you're able to, bring your own bread roll for your burger, or at least some cutlery, the new paper knives and forks are awful, it's impossible to cut into something without them bending all over the place. 3* - OK. Very useful on a match day and one of the latest places opening nearby for food and drink.

The old railway building. Thanks yelp for making me aware. They have a lunch special with a selection of burgers and a chicken sandwich for £10 (at the time of this review 07/2023). That includes a side of fries. I noticed every restaurant that you walk In the host will ask you about any allergies or intolerances. If you let them know you're they will let you know what to avoid. Or if they do not know they will send you a manager who knows. There must have been a huge problem with allergies and it is a great way to avoid it. It is, in the beginning, a bit annoying until you realize it is actually a good thing (I wonder if Mcdonald's to the same - I'll might have to try that). So I ordered the chicken burger with a breaded fried chicken breast some black pepper mayo sauce some salad, Onions, and a slap of avocado. WOW - the nicely tasting breaded chicken was fried to perfection and it was a really big piece without drying out. Good job! the "burner" was definitely the combination of chicken and that avocado spread mixed in With the black Peppercorn mayonnaise - an almost perfect bite. The bun was not too big to get in the way of tasting what's important all other ingredients have been fresh and am tasty the fries also fried to a crisp state without being burned. Hands down a surprisingly great burger. Oh, I will be back - the service was five starts as well quick, knowledgeable, and friendly!

Cheetham Hill is a bit off the beaten path, but as an enthusiast for urban bricolage, I've discovered a fantastic meandering approach footpath from Rochdale Road through new and derelict industrial sites. (More of daytime route, folks!) It's the familiar curry café scenario here with the menu of the day on a whiteboard and seating for 30 at canteen tables. Both Kabanas are gleamingly whitewashed and clean. This Kabana wins foodie points for big, juicy chunks of aubergine, tomato and potato in the daily special, and also the range of complimentary (free) garnishes - coriander leaf, fresh ginger, fresh chilli, roast cumin seed and a sweet digestive masala for afters. Fried rice was OK, and the chapati was a bit elastic - I would plan asking for a couple of chapatis cooked to order next time and skip the rice. The spicing of the curries was significantly hotter than I normally prefer, with the heat drowning the other flavours a bit. However, the heat wasn't a straight blast of chilli, and I identified whole black peppercorns, whole clove and green cardamon. Between the spicing and the way the veg was cooked, this is a more authentic curry café. Whilst wider Cheetham Hill is not much of a conventional tourist destination, the vibe in Kabana is lively and up there with the best egalitarian venues. There seemed to be enough tables - but only just - when offices workers converged en masse at 1pm. But customer turnover is fast, so there should always be a seat for everyone. Curry cafés are good for foodies, vegetarian or not, as their foucs is all on putting great value on the plate - no staging, no marketing. I recommend trying Kabana alongside other top places featured on my 'Curry Cafés of Manchester' list.
