I was looking for a breed of dog that was smart, loyal, had no genetic predisposition to many of the health issues that seem to afflict modern breeds, was good with others and other animals, and would be a good guard dog making sure any unwanted visitors wouldn't make their way into our residence. I settled on a Dutch Shepherd. I located Von Falconer and called them. I spoke with Eric and he said he had a few puppies available. So, I went to the facility and met with Eric and met Bryan. The facility is in a beautiful location. Eric was quite knowledgable and didn't pressure us in any way. We spoke about the puppies and what the assessment of each one was. We were given plenty of time to spend with the puppies. We talked about costs and training then I left to think about what we'd experienced. I called Eric back and decided to purchase a young male that I named Taka. The transaction was smooth and we were given some free training classes to get Taka started. Taka was everything I'd hoped for. He was smart and amazingly athletic. The classes were well run. Taka learned quickly. We did not continue formal training after the initial classes but continued to work with Taka at home. As he grew up, his personality really came into it's own. He was very loving though a bit rough and tumble. Dutch shepherds are durable dogs. Taka was very sweet and it was obvious that the breed is quite sensitive to the emotions of those in his pack. It's important not to be angry with the dog or train the dog with negative reinforcement while maintaining your Alpha status. Dutch shepherds are a bit stubborn and you will need to behave like an Alpha or it's possible they may run amok. Eric was always professional, knowledgable, yet friendly and clearly cared about Taka and wanted us to be successful with him. I owned Taka for almost 12 wonderful years before he passed. I had such a positive experience with Von Falconer that I will be giving them a call when it's time for me to welcome another Dutch into my home. read more

I was so blessed to find Von Faulkner K-9 Training Camp. My German Shepherd Von Royal Prince when he was a puppy tore big holes in my white couch. He ate through the wood on my stairs and carpet. I was so beside myself on what to do. I was told about this K-9 Training Camp in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains. It was an amazing drive there. So beautiful. My puppy stayed a month in Boot Camp and he was well trained by the best!!! My dog is so behaved and I am so grateful. He understands commands. If I could leave minus five I would. These people could not be more crooked. I'm an experienced dog trainer and have trained several of my own GSD through off leash protection. I have taught hundreds of classes and had great success training other people to train their dogs. I got a two year old female fro Eric through a barter. My dog for the pick of the litter. My dog had been so horribly treated at the Von Falconer kennel it took me a year to just get her to walk on a leash. I've never seen a dog so traumatized. With lots of attention and training she finally got something somewhat better. She never got over being afraid of almost everything. Her reaction was just toned down. When I picked her up Eric told me I needed to work in her prey instinct. I lived where I could walk her on several acres every evening. And every evening she would take off like she was shot out of a canon chasing after whatever critters there were. She had great prey instinct! She was poetry in motion and I loved watching her. When she gave birth to six healthy puppies I called Eric. He sounded absolutely stunned she had a litter. Eric also had her mother and she looked exactly like her mother. I strongly suspect he had registered some of her mother's litters to my dog. I am familiar with many of his dogs and found his breeding to be inconsistent. He couldn't seem to get a dog who adhered to the standard. Several of his dogs were way oversized. As a trainer he has no clue what he's doing. None of his dogs are trained in AKC basic obedience. The poor dogs have no direction but are expected to perform. They are yanked around and held between the handlers legs. The protection training is chaos. With no basic obedience the dogs were just lunging and biting. Not the way it's done. Von Falconer's is a disaster. Stay away! read more

When my house was nearly broken into for the second time in a year I decided I had, had enough and needed to step up my security. I searched all over for a family protection dog. With two small kids I needed to make an investment for a trained, even tempered security dog. Of course any animal in the house would be treated as a family member but I wanted to make an investment to make sure he was also going to be safe with my kids, my house and more importantly to do a job of keeping us all safe from outside harm. I found Von Falconer on the internet and called them right away. I explained what I was looking for and they said they had a great dog for me. I went up to see him and we fell in love with this beautiful dog. The only reason in fact for any stars is because he was an absolutely gorgeous and loving animal with good (not great, but good) training). Von Falconer promised to be my support system if I needed anything. Immediately after getting him home I noticed he wasn't feeling well. I called and the manager told me that it was probably adjustment issues and to give it a day or two. I called again the next day because he had gotten worse and based on their contract I thought I should bring him back to get treatment. The manager told me I could take him to my own vet and see what was going on. I did, and my vet found that from the grounds he was on that he had a bad case of Giardia. $384 later he was feeling better. 5 Months down the line, things were going well. He was well behaved, had the run of the house, a dog door so he could come in and out when we weren't home and protect the house. Then on a dime he changed, when we would leave suddenly he would tear apart the trash, destroy furniture, growled at my kids for no reason. I took him to the vet to see if he was in physical distress, I increased his walk time, etc. He has ample toys, bones, love and attention. There was no reason I could find for the behavior change and more importantly I couldn't stop it. I called Von Falconer for advise as to what I should do. It took them nearly 3 days to get back to me. The manager wouldn't call or e-mail me back, the office person called and left a voicemail saying that the manager said to put him in a cage while I go out! What??? First of all that defeats the whole purpose of a guard dog. Second of all, he was fine and able to have free run up until a few weeks ago when he flipped on a dime. That's the best you have for me?? I am so disappointed with these people. I now have a hugely expensive animal that I have grown quite attached to and depend of for security and now I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Von Falconer claims they are support team and that their dogs are top of the line. I think the breeding is impeccable and the dog are gorgeous and sweet, but the support system is virtually non-existent at this point. read more

I bought my puppy here 7 years ago as a Christmas puppy. He passed away last month. I have to say that my experience with von falconer was horrible. I came and picked out my puppy before he was ready to be brought home. I put a deposit down and came back to visit him. When I looked at pictures I found out they had brought out his brother instead of him. I can only assume that they had "sold" him to someone else or did not know how to keep tract of of puppies. They said they didn't know what happenrd and claimed they had never done that before, but what an inexcusable thing to do. Now my precious German Shepherd has passed. I called and told them and received no offer of another puppy. He was a great dog but no vet saw anything in check ups. I took excellent care of him, I expected him to live much longer. I miss him so so much I spent 2500 on him and another 15000 in vet bills and he is gone. read more

We brought our Dutch Shepherd here because she was wild and out of control. I'm really surprised that there is only one Yelp review on here because, just by word-of-mouth, we found out that this faciltity is well-known and well-respected in the training community. We are so glad we "went out of the way" to find this training facility. It is nested up in the gorgeous Bonny Doon area, next to a winery and a Bahai retreat. A great place to visit. Eric and his staff are kind, communicative and they understand our needs-- we were given a protection dog but we just want her as a pet. They were willing to help us if we wanted her to become a personal protection dog, but they were honest with us and they could tell that she would be better as a pet. Our Dutchie changes when she goes to their training facility-- she obeys the staff naturally, obeys us when we bring her home, then we only have to reinforce what we learned. These people really LOVE dogs. They delight in bringing out the best in the animal, and in helping the owners make an obedient, happy dog. read more

We explained all of the issues about our dog and took her in before we left for holiday. A week into the trip, we called in to check on our dog. Eric and Brian are truly world class. We bought our German Shepherd Dog as a puppy from here. Eric and Brian have always been attentive and patient with him. Eric threw in some free obedience classes (which I highly recommend). They are dog whisperers. Seriously. I've seen owners take their out-of-control, crazy, about to bite your head off dogs here for their first time classes and Eric would walk right up to them and speak softly to them. They sit and down for him like they've always known him. AMAZING! Fernando is awesome with the dogs in the obstacle course. Our GSD loves running through it! At first we wanted a protection dog, but after talking with Eric we decided weren't going down that path with our 100lb GSD. That's what we love about Eric and his staff. They are honest people and sure, they could make a boatload of money out of $5000 protection training, but they choose to recommend just the loving, playful family dog instead. Our experience with Von Falconer has been (is) a good one. We have been taking our GSD rescue for training and purchased a puppy in addition. Both dogs and the whole family have benefited from the training classes and the advice given to all of us. Brian and Francisco, both, take their craft serious and they are always ready to share insights and advice. We have boarded both dogs at Von Falconer's where they received daily training, workouts and playtime. Our rescue received special personal attention and her demeanor has greatly improved. The dog we purchased is a very strong, intelligent and very good looking dog. He has a high drive and has pretty sound nerves. The influence of this particular dog on our rescue has been a tremendous. Our rescue is more confident, happier and more sound because of her pack mate. GSD need constant training and refreshers to obedience. Because of their high drive and their intelligence they will test their Alphas (which are supposed to be the humans) and if not corrected early, it will cause problems, such as described in some of the lesser rated reviews. The GSD wants to belong to his/her pack and they will work for it with loyalty and their protective drive, but they will also take advantage of a lax attitude towards training and try to run and rule the house, because someone has to :-) . No dog can be expected to be trained a bit, put in a home and have the 'protect' switch flipped. Training and refreshers are part of your life from now on until the end of your best friends time on this earth. You may not have to go to Von Falconer for training, but train you must, at home, at another facility or at Von Falconer. read more

I have purchased a dog before and was completely satisfied BUT in Sept. 2017 I purchased a new dog for over $2,000 and have never received the papers. I have tried many times to contact them by phone, email and texting, but no answer. I would not buy anymore dogs here...... or at least not give them the money unless paperwork is right there. We dropped off our beloved Austrian Shepherd for a 3-day stay. When we returned we found her cowering in the back of a kennel. She was so terrified she would not even come out of the kennel to greet me. I was horrified. I have no idea what happened to my poor dog other than she was severely traumatized. I purchased a Dutch Shepard from Bryan Falconer here several months ago. In addition to purchasing the dog, I paid an extra $2,000 for the 30-day training program they had. The dog and training is definitely not as described: 1 - The dog was very timid with people (not a confident working dog). 2 - The dog wasn't trained much at all, she knew the basic commands (sit, stay, and to heel on leash) however, because they did training/working on leash, whenever I would walk her, she would refuse to go potty on leash. I literally would walk her from 30 minutes to an hour and she wouldn't go, but the minute we got home and I took her off leash she would pee and poop in the house (another false claim stating she was potty trained) 3 - Another false advertisement to the list, was that the dog was crate trained. This dog was as far from crate trained as physically possible. She was horrified about going into the crate. Any dog with proper crate training actually enjoys going into their crate, as it's considered a sanctuary place for them. She would bark and cry for hours when put in the crate. She hated the crate so much to the point where she actually peed and pooped in the crate even though she had to sit in it for a couple hours. For a dog to go potty where she sleeps means that she really hated it in there and did not feel like it was her safe space. 4 - She was fearful towards men and the crate, which leads me to believe this dog was either neglected or abused. Either way, the behavioral traits of this dog at 6-7 months old were clearly from a broken home. I had to hire another trainer to get her to unlearn all her bad habits, which is much harder to do than training her properly from the start. The training (if you want to call it that) that I paid for was a complete scam. If anyone is looking for a house dog, be prepared that your dog will not be housebroken whatsoever. They don't even let the dogs in their house. They were all locked up in kennels or in crates. I made the mistake of not doing enough due diligence prior to making this purchase (that I would need to be committed to for the next 13 years). I expressed all of these concerns to Bryan Falconer, and I would be extremely lucky if he answered the phone or called me back. Not only did I get suckered in to spending so much money on this dog and training, but their customer service and satisfaction is non-existent. Overall, this was a traumatic, frustrating, and sad experience that I've had to deal with. I usually don't write reviews, and when I do they are very short. This is the first review I've actually spent time composing because I want anyone that's looking to purchase from this breeder to think twice. I highly discourage anyone from purchasing from here, but if you do happen to buy a puppy, whatever you do, do not spend the extra money on training because that's just another way for them to sucker you out of more money while the dog sits and does nothing. Ultimately, I couldn't even handle it. Fortunately, the trainer that I was working with to help her unlearn her bad habits agreed to adopt her and had the time to work with her. I then moved on to another puppy that came from a reputable breeder and had proper obedience training completed and my dog is perfect, which is what I was expecting originally from Von Falconer. I hope this sheds some light and helps some people prior to purchasing, so they don't get fooled and make the same mistake i did. read more

My wife and I purchased a male Dutch Shepherd puppy from Von Falconer one year ago. We visited the puppies when they were six weeks old and returned at 8 weeks to take one home. Bryan recommended a black colored male which we named Watson. Watson is absolutely the best dog anyone could want. He is healthy, affectionate, loyal, incredibly intelligent and just plain fun. Bryan is a wealth of information and has always been available to answer our questions and provide excellent advice. Great place to get a over priced family pet, Nothing sold are trained at this facility should be labeled a protection dog, working dog, are family guardian. A shepherd sold to me as a Family protection dog, with no show faults.... ended up being a floppy eared dog, with little- no drives, he came with a 100% satisfaction, not honored!!!, after several reasonable attempts being made. They took the working dog, mixed it with poorly bred show dogs, and created a dog not suitable for show and not strong enough for work. worst mistake of my life dealing with this facility and buying a dog from them. If you want a shepherd you are better off adopting at a local shelter for 1/5 the cost. These dogs are overpriced, have weak nerves, poorly bred, weak drives, I could go on. We could not be happier with our Dutch shepherd from Von Falconer K9. Sabre is now six months old and 60 pounds. He joined our 4 year old Malinois as part of our family. Sabre is a sound, stable, well-rounded dog. Fantastic with the family and friends and is exceptional in his protection training. He is easy to train, smart and everything Von Falconer K9 promised and more. We do spend a good deal of time with this training and please know these dogs are not happy just being house pets, They love to have a job. The staff at Von Falconer K9 was very responsive and we even paid a visit to see the parents before our puppy was born. I was pretty surprised at a couple of the other reviews that I had read because our experience has been more than exceptional. All of the staff were responsive to all of our calls and emails and kept us in the loop once he was born, they even sent us videos every other week of the puppies. Sabre is a perfect family protection dog. He's a goofball around the house but when it's time to work he really shines. Couldn't be happier with our Von Falconer's Swift Sabre. read more

We bought a dog from them 3 years ago. She is one of the most gorgeous German Shepherds I've ever seen. They estimated she'd weigh 75lb but turned out to be 90lbs. The facility gives you a nice information packet and 4 free training classes when you buy your pup. The staff is nice. The down side is that we never got our AKC papers, the training classes were boring. The trainers were good at training dogs one on one, but could not make the transition into teaching others to train. Our dog also had giardia that was difficult to cure, spent many months going back and forth to the vet over GI issues. The dog we wanted as a family pet ended up being extremely strong willed and high drive. Had to invest lots and lots of time and money in training, more than any other dog I've owned. We now have a very protective, intelligent GSD. She is great with our immediate family and our cats. She is doing so much better socializing with other dogs, still likes to play like a puppy and has lots of dog friends in our neighborhood. Despite the problems, I would still recommend a Von Falconer dog if you are willing to commit to lots of training, and get training from another facility. read more

I purchased a beautiful male Dutch Shepherd puppy from Von Falconer. The puppy is gorgeous and is HUGE! He's already 30 pounds at just under four months of age. Beautiful, sweet, and very obedient (learned to sit on command in the second day I had him!), yet has the requisite drive, confidence, and desire to bite to make a good Schutzhund prospect. I already have begun some tracking exercises with him, too. Additionally, my puppy has magnificent conformation. I can only hope that, when I eventually title him and have his hips/elbows cleared, I can find a female worthy to breed to him. My eventual goal is to breed and train police K9s and SAR prospects. My puppy is beautiful, as well as physically and mentally stable. That is a testament to the breeder's abilities and choice of dogs for breeding. I would recommend Von Falconer to anyone, and I won't hesitate to purchase another dog from them when that time comes. read more

Von Falconer is one of those rare businesses that far exceeds expectations. I would give them 10 stars if I could. We have two German Shepherds from Von Falconer Canine Training Facility, and they are beautiful, highly intelligent, loving dogs. We have a four year old named Kona who is fun, connected, well behaved and happy, committed to keeping our home safe. We take her out with us often and always get comments from people about how beautiful and calm she is. We wanted Kona to have a playmate at this point, so we just brought home from Von Falconer a four-month old named Winslow who was easily house trained and knows many of his commands. We expected to be going through the puppy stage for months, but Winslow has already learned to cue us when he needs to go outside and has gone from being a bit bitey to knowing how to "leave it" and how to be gentle when he takes his treats from us. We have only needed to tell him something maybe two or three times before he remembers it and makes it part of his behavior. Our adoption of Winslow comes with two months of training sessions, and we expect Winslow to come out of his training knowing his full set of commands. Above all, we know we will have Von Falconer's support whenever we need it which makes the process so easy and so much more effective. read more

They did such a great job with him, not only did he get loving care while I was gone but he got some great foundation training and he came back a new dog! Just purchased my fourth dog from here. I have been a client since 1999. I have had three of the best dogs ever from here. They have all been healthy well adjusted dogs. I have been to the facility and always found it to be clean. The staff has always been very helpful and knowledgeable. I have not used any of the training services so I cannot rate them. I recently lost my female to illness and I had no hesitation whatsoever about getting another dog from here. They know their dogs and are very helpful. They have been really good with communicating with me during this difficult process and have kept me regularly updated in the new litter. read more

I brought my dog Aki here a few months ago. i did alot of research on local training facilities for my german shepherd. after exchanging a few emails with Eric at von falconer and emails with some other places in san jose, I finally decided that i would take her to von falconer. i did this because i wanted her to learn obedience as well as keep her drive to protect our family. she spent about a month with von falconer. in this month they taught her the fundementals ( she was young when i took her so it would be hard for her to learn much more than the basics) but they told me i could bring her back for a free week at a later date to make sure that i was satisfied with their performace. they are located in the santa cruz mountains which was a little far for me but it was worth it because they know what theyre doing. they also have an iphone app which i would reccomend to download because it has some good tips. read more

I put a yelp review up last year and I notice it is not on here anymore, so I want to make sure to put it back up, as I was horrified to my experience with this company. I boarded my son's dog at vonfalconers last november, right after or during Thanksgiving, my son was stuck in New York so I got Chico from Bed and Biscuits (he loves that place,) and took him to Vonfalconer as this was the only place available at the time. I had no yard to keep my sons dog. He was 85 to 90lbs at the time of placement. I brought a specialized bag of dog food with him to the place. I signed an agreement and we left it open as my son didn't know when he would be back. After one month and a couple of days, I went up to the place to pick up Chico, as my son was still in New York and decided to abandon his dog to the shelter. Yes,, I was beside myself at this request, as he has owned this dog for 10 years, but that was not the issue, as I ended up giving the dog to his ex wife, who met me at the shelter. When I picked up Chico, Bryan would not come to the gate, he had his handler there, and he shoved Chico through a side gate, without a leash, and said to me "it is what it is". Chico's bones were showing, and he was to my eyes almost dead. I took him to the shelter and they weighed him in at just 47 pounds. This means Chico had to lose half his body weight in just one month, he had sores on his rear end indicating that he sat on concrete for long hours at a time. Bryan won't return my calls, and yes I filled out a report to the humane society. They won't give me any info as I am not the registered owner, but I pray to god none ever leaves an animal in Bryans care ever again. Yes, my son paid him over 2 thousand dollars for this care. Never never place an animal there. He is a liar, and his animals all look unhealthy. I was mentally thinking that when I left Chico there, as I thought to myself, "gosh this looks like over breeding or something, the animals were all pacing frantically." This happened in december of 2017. I can't believe people are actually still buying dogs from this guy, Oh and a piece of news, this place has been in business for along time, Bryan however is not the original owner. Just and FYI. He is surely riding on the coat tails of the previous owner. read more

My husband found Von Falconer online and we were going to go check out Dutch Shepherds but fell in love with a female German Shepherd. This is my first German Shepherd and my first bred dog, having shelter mutts all my life. My girl, we named her Berlin, has been a real eye-opener. She is smart as a whip, agile and has a thoughtfulness and independence I never expected. I have come across shepherds before and they all seemed neurotic, needy and destructive. Berlin is 7 months now and 50 pounds and she is already a fierce and loyal protectress but is also very much an easy going (loves every dog she meets) and social girl. She travels with us everywhere and I can't wait to see the adult that she will blossom into. We get so may compliments as she is also very beautiful and all black. I travel every other weekend or so to see Brian and the crew at Von Falconer Canine Training Facility from over 75 miles away. They have helped me to get my GSD very well trained by training ME! first. Often it is the owner that is the biggest enemy of a well trained dog as we simply do not have the tools to train effectively. The boarding here is awful. Small dirty kennels, dirty business style and overall bad place to take your dog.

Our Dutch shepherd is now a year old. We got her from Von Falconer Canine. She's in obedience training and doing very well. We live in New York so they're not training her but they are always in touch with us and ready to give suggestions or a consultation if need be if we're hanving an issue. She has alot of energy so she needs alot of work but we were told that when we got her. we don't do treat training so it's all a matter of respect. our trainer says she's absotutely wonderful to work with and very smart; that goes along with the breed and stable selection of sire and dam. Hats off to Von Falconer for that. In 2015 our intent is to purchase another Dutch Shepherd. This dog will come from Von Falconer Canine. It will probably be an adult and trained by Von Falconer. I have the utmost confidence in them. I look forward to meeting the staff from Von Falconer they are true professionals. read more

Von Falconer Canine deserves 5 stars plus! When you are looking for a German Shepherd dog you have to know that this dog will be a part of the family in a big way. Brian VonFalconer and his team understand how top breeding is done with this line. Your pup will learn all the basics very easily, sit, stay, come, which Brian offers with the purchase, but he offers much more as the dog grows. Family manners for German Shepherd are so important and Brian and his team take you there. These dogs are not over bread so there is minimal if any hip problems, they are beautiful to look at. I live in San Francisco and I can't walk down the street without someone telling me how beautiful my shepherd is. She is just as nice inside as out, and very protective. She is so smart that when I tell her it is OK she knows all is safe. She adores other dogs and plays often with them at the park. Brian had me expose her early on, and we did. What I love about the Von Falconer group is they still answer questions after three years of owning a dog. It becomes a triangle, you, the dog, and Brian. I searched all over for the right breeder and I am so happy I did my homework as I have a dog I adore. It is worth the trip to Santa Cruz. The also have a great web site. read more
