Its prior name was Prisenmarkt (named after Prinsengracht (Prince canal)). The earliest version of the market sold everything from pottery, textiles, household items, second-hand goods and pigeons. There's a detailed accounting of this market's history on their website. The current iteration of the market consists of 1) a farmer's market with many local and artisanal producers of farm produce, meats and dairy, baked goods, etc. and 2) a "general goods" market which consists of stands selling housewares, art, vintage clothing and accessories, antiques, textiles and household furnishings, and more. The former is held on Saturdays 9-4pm, the latter on Saturdays same time as the farmers market and Mondays 9-2pm. From where I was walking around, it looked like about three dozen vendors with stands of varied sizes gathered here to sell on a Saturday morning. I also arrived around 9:30am, so there were still vendors setting up too. What a bustling atmosphere and certainly lots of locals doing some weekend food shopping--saw plenty of veggies, fruit, bread, placed directly in bicycle crates (on the front or back of this popular transportation method Amsterdam is well-known for) and biked away. So many yummy looking items! It made me wish I had a kitchen there so I could buy and prepare food from this market. We bought Dutch cheeses ( cheaper than the specialty stores either same brands) , scarves, freshly made stroopwafels, herring fish sandwiches ( not our thing), and all kinds of things. Stopped at this large supermarket to pick up an inexpensive dinner and to check to see if they have…read morethe freshly squeezed orange juice like they have at the Lidl markets in Portugal and Spain and they do!! A deliciously fresh bottle of juice for under 3 euros! You put your bottle under the spout, push the button, and watch as your fresh juice is squeezed into your bottle. The juice is fantastic and you can taste the freshness of it. The oranges are just sweet enough and it's so wonderful to know it's all juice with no additives. The bottle is about 6 oz., but you can also purchase a larger bottle (can't remember the cost). There's no way you can get a bottle of fresh OJ in the states for this little bit of money! The food they carry seems to be pretty much on the healthy side. They have ready made meals you can get for a quick dinner. There are also the regular grocery items for those looking for more. Lots of different ready made salads, a meat market, fresh veggies, a fish/seafood section, and a bakery are also here. Their offerings are extensive and it's a great place to pop in for a quick meal or snack item. The discounts are the best part, everything's quite cheap. If you're looking for something super specific I'd try here first with the knowledge you might have to go to a second store to get everything you need. Not the best upkeep store, there's empty boxes and stuff laying around, and the layout is kind of hard to get around with carts.

I went in twice while we were staying in the area for about a week, and noticed changing items in a seasonal bin that were fun - first it was Christmas sweaters and socks, then it changed to pillows and towels... just random stuff. They have a bunch of great snacky things - nuts, dried fruit, chocolates - I actually picked up packs of chocolate drinking sticks (like a chocolate ice cube stuck on a popsicle stick) to bring home to give away to friends. I picked up fruit, pre-made smoothies, and sweets. Such a great find compared to higher end markets on bigger streets that have great options also and fancier items, but much higher prices.
