    Candy sold by weight
    Peggy F.

4 Star. Overall. Would return. But quite pricy. I've passed by their stands at multiple supermarkets throughout the decades, nothing looks appetizing initially so never stopped to try. My impression changed a month or so ago after trying a few samples and now I'm a regular returning customer for select snacks. This place is known as 老字號 (lao zhi hao) in Chinese or Vua Kho Bo (VKB) is their English store name. 5 Star. Quality. Compared with the packaged snacks on the shelves of Asian supermarkets, I'm very surprised that the freshness here is far superior. It's as if, VKB's snacks were recently freshly made vs. the grocery store packaged snacks that were made a year ago and kept fresh with added preservatives and artificial additives. I was always curious how VKB stayed in business for so long, but apparently, their snacks do quickly sell out and their non-air-tight-and-frequently-opened containers are frequently refilled with incoming fresh batches. 3 Star. Price. These snacks are NOT inexpensive at all. Let me rephrase - they are SUPER expensive compared to grocery store shelf packaged snacks at almost double the price. (e.g. a 6.3 oz of dry olives at $3.99~$5.50 vs $7.09 at VKB) I'm always wondering why is my total bill so high and finally decided to weigh my purchases with my home scale & calculate for price comparison. Turns out that their scale is accurate & I was not overcharged. In fact, the lady rounded off and gave me a $0.33 discount, billing me $59 for what weighs $59.33, no tax added. On top of that, she gave me a free cup of warm tea and 1.7oz of dried sour plum on the side for free. The price in-store matches the prices on their online store laozihaousa.com as well. 5 Star. Variety. Plenty of options to choose from. Some have added preservatives, artificial additives, MSG, etc. but some do not and are all natural. I carefully checked out every snack and sample tasted everything I was interested in, narrowing down to a select few all-natural healthy snacks that I would purchase on a recurring basis. Purchased Items (and the ones I like): * 龜苓膏軟糖 GuiLing Cream Candy @ $12/lb - my calculation from my home scale tells me that each candy costs $0.284. My kid likes this. It's chewy, lightly sweet, and helps with stopping his frequent nosebleeds. * 無核大黑橄欖 Large Black Seedless Olives @ $18/lb - my calculation from my home scale tells me that each olive costs $0.574. So, just consuming 5 or 6 of these small addicting olives would be the same price as an In-N-Out hamburger...the cost of lunch. * 橄欖簽 Sliced Olive @ $16/lb - my calculation shows that each slice of olive costs $0.11. About 4-5 slices make up 1 olive. So each olive costs $0.44 to $0.55. It's hard to stop eating these... * Dried Konjac @$15/lb - several different flavor options, 0 calories & vegan. The salty ones (5 Spice or Spicy) taste better than the sweet ones. I can eat this endlessly... * 桂圓紅棗茶磚 Logan Red Date Jelly Tea Cube @ $18/lb - approximately 1.5 oz each cube or $1.69/cube. Boil a cube with 2~3 cups of water until it melts (2 cups water if you want it sweeter), then strain through a filter (remove fruit skin residue). Tastes great hot, or cool in the fridge and it becomes jello-like. A nice and convenient drink/snack on a cold or hot day.

I purchase 2 lb beef jerky for my friend, that is weight when she got it ! When u guys go there , make sure to bring your own scale

I also came here for some pretty yogurt bowls. I ended up picking green grapes, mangos, and strawberries for my yogurt bowl. The fruits were all delicious and the cereal gave a good crisp that made me wanting to eat more. The yogurt was okay but with the honey and all the mix in made it something I would come back to get often. I thought it was on more on the pricey side but they use really good ingredients. It will be more of a monthly treat. Overall, if you're looking for yummy ripe fruits or beautiful yogurt bowls this is your spot.

The layout of the store was very interesting because it looked like a mini market, and they sell fresh exotic fruits and snacks. Ordering a yogurt was a bit confusing because I did not see any pricing, but they had some instructions on how to order. Step 1: Choose dry Greek yogurt. Step 2: Pick up your fresh fruits (limit 3 items). Step 3: Choose Topping (Oats, coconut chips, or boom boom pearl). Step 4: Honey or Dark Chocolate My daughter picked a small jar of Organic blue spirulina with coconut dry yogurt. Then she picked green grapes, mangos, and strawberries for her yogurt bowl. And we also picked boom boom pearl for topping, and chose honey at the end. Then the lady told me that the price was $24.08. It was pricey. I don't understand their pricing or explanation, even though I have the receipt. She told me that it took about 10-15 minutes to make it. Honestly, for the small jar of organic blue spirulina with coconut dry yogurt, it tasted a bit sour, and I was not a fan of it. The presentation of the yogurt was nice; however, for the price that we paid, it was still a bit ripped off. The fruits were fresh, and the boom boom pearl tasted like popping boba was interesting. The Greek Yogurt was a bit too thick. I would rather go to the Açaí bowl place to have more fresh fruit and a bigger portion. The lady was friendly and helpful. But I would rather go to Açaí bowl and Yogurtland combined next time. P.S. I forgot to mention that they were out of honey, so no honey in the yogurt bowl.

There are lots of varieties of dried plums, prunes, and sugary coated hawthorne fruit. Along with that, there's the selections of dried beef, pork, and fish jerkies. Other dried items include taro chips and sweet potato chips. The back wall holds tubs with the "wet" fruits of mango and plums. And, a few tubs hold individually wrapped candies--sesame, butter, and other flavors. Don't worry if you don't know what you want, the ladies will pretty much let you try them all! With all the tubs of snacks, the only thing you have to do is point and tell them how much you want in a bag. It sells by the pound--ranging from $8 to $16 (meats are more expensive), a bit pricey. But it's definately a bigger and fresher selection than what you'd find in the isles of 99 ranch market. One thing to be aware of, even if you tell them you only want a pound, they tend to over fill it. And unless you specifically tell them you don't want it all, they'll just seal the bag and charge you (hence no five stars). But after you purchase it, they usually throw in a few extra of the individually wrapped candies in your bag. Overall, everything tastes pretty great --it totally depends on what you prefer (salty, sweet, sour, crunchy snacks)--they've got it all.

I believe it was about $12 a pound and true to Jenny's statement - they did over fill it. However, they asked me if it was ok or if I'd like to take some out. While appreciated I didn't really want to make her walk over and adjust the weight - especially since I'd have no trouble eating it all ^_^ This is a slightly smaller version of an identical store I used to visit in LA's Chinatown (I want to say off of Broadway) but for the life of me I can't remember the name!

I came in on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm, and my first impressions walking in was the interior is clean and pleasantly warm. I ordered the creamy mala seafood pasta since it was the most unique dish on the menu. Service was good but nothing special. Creamy mala seafood pasta, 2.5/5: The pasta was inoffensively average. There were some bites that were creamy and some bites that weren't. I honestly thought it could use more cream or butter to add some more richness. The pasta itself was al dente. There wasn't much flavor overall with the dish, and the mala was very mild (for reference, I can handle medium spice levels at other restaurants). The seafood quality was okay for the price. Overall, I thought the ambiance was really nice, but the pasta I ordered was average at best. Maybe I will give this place a 2nd chance and try something else.

Owners are so nice and cool, one is the chef and the other is a pastry chef. Atmosphere and vibes were nice in a Saturday evening, but food could be a bit better. It's fine for a casual dining but nothing really stood out to me except maybe the Kale salad that was good and never really had it that way before. Brother enjoyed his food and was happy with everything. With that said, we will still come back because the owners and atmosphere are still worth the trip. Maybe will try something else on the menu next time.

It's been ages since I visited Taiwan but I do remember all the good food! The shop is tidy and they manage to pack a lot of items in here while still making it feel uncluttered. Some items they had for sale when I was here were various high grade oolong teas, the Taiwanese version of Otter Pops, pineapple cakes and soy sauce. They have a frozen section in addition to their shelf stable foods with items such as fish and various dumplings. While the cashier spoke both Mandarin and English, the person giving out samples of oolong teas only spoke Mandarin (In hindsight I should have asked if she spoke Taiwanese too). I'd love to come back next time I'm in the area to get more goodies for myself and as gifts.
