I am a huge fan of Asian fusion cuisine, so I was pretty excited to try SAMK after reading the reviews online and their menu. I came in on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm, and my first impressions walking in was the interior is clean and pleasantly warm. I ordered the creamy mala seafood pasta since it was the most unique dish on the menu. Service was good but nothing special. Creamy mala seafood pasta, 2.5/5: The pasta was inoffensively average. There were some bites that were creamy and some bites that weren't. I honestly thought it could use more cream or butter to add some more richness. The pasta itself was al dente. There wasn't much flavor overall with the dish, and the mala was very mild (for reference, I can handle medium spice levels at other restaurants). The seafood quality was okay for the price. Overall, I thought the ambiance was really nice, but the pasta I ordered was average at best. Maybe I will give this place a 2nd chance and try something else. read more

We had a really good experience here, nice evening to sit outdoors despite loud Karaoke playing, it was still nice and we actually enjoyed it. Owners are so nice and cool, one is the chef and the other is a pastry chef. Atmosphere and vibes were nice in a Saturday evening, but food could be a bit better. It's fine for a casual dining but nothing really stood out to me except maybe the Kale salad that was good and never really had it that way before. Brother enjoyed his food and was happy with everything. With that said, we will still come back because the owners and atmosphere are still worth the trip. Fantastic little restaurant nestled in a convenient plaza in Rowland Heights. I initially couldn't find it, google maps took me to the side of the plaza. But if you park around the plaza, just walk to the front, and get to the center of the plaza square, then you will find the restaurant facing you. I went at lunch, not too many people, probably because it is new/not well known. I was able to easily order my food and find plenty of seating. Very convenient for moderate to large size parties I think. the staff members were very nice, and helpful. I ordered the Grilled Steak bowel and it was perfectly made, medium rare, although they did not ask me if I wanted medium rare (that is how I eat my steak). So if you want it more cooked, you probably want to specify it beforehand. The meat was well done and the veggies tasted fresh. The price was very reasonable as well. Food was delicious. Love the concept of doing some Chinese/Italian/Western dishes. They have Japanese Italian fusion dishes at other restaurants so why not Chinese. Enough flavor so that you know it's there and with none of the chili oil. Sandstorm chicken wings- perfectly cooked chicken wings. The batter has a slight twist to it. Grill steak veg grain bowl- omg I didn't expect to like this dish that much but it was so good. I know the description doesn't sound like it's anything crazy but the execution on the dish was so good I gotta recommend. Other dishes: African dan dan noodles- There was def dan dan flavor but ultimately it felt like the dish was missing something. I think it needs like green onions or ground beef to like bring it out. Located right next door to Hide Out Cafe, Pot & Wok has been renamed SAMK (after owners Sam and Kate). I personally think they should change it to SAM-K as the owner Kate pronounced it, as I had difficulty trying to initially pronounce it - I thought it was "Sam-kuh". Look for the little statue of the cool bear wearing shades and you've found it! The restaurant is on the smaller side, just a few tables to dine in. The owner is also the server as well as the pastry chef, so it's a full hands on operation, and I respect the hustle. SAMK offers fusion food, namely Asian with other entrees inspired from around the world like African Dan Dan Noodles, Sichuan Fried Chicken Sandwich, or Shawarma Chicken Bowl. My friend and I shared the Shawarma Chicken Bowl and the Truffle Mushroom Alfredo Fettuccine, and while I ordered the Elderflower Cold Brew to drink, she got the Earl Grey Milk Brew. The Fettuccine was fantastic - great umami flavor and the fettuccine seemed handmade, they were wide flat noodles, and not like the kind you get from the box. There was also a big mozzarella ball on top, which was nice to eat with the pasta. We both thought the shawarma bowl was ok. It was so colorful and beautiful with all the different vegetables, and came with 3 chicken skewers, however the chicken was dry, and overall the dish lacked flavor. It could probably be better if they used chicken thighs, so that it could be juicier and more flavorful. I decided to try the Elderflower Cold Brew as I was curious as to what that would taste like, and honestly, I didn't taste anything except cold brew. Besides having some flower pieces on the top of the drink, I couldn't distinguish any notable flavor profiles and it just tasted like regular iced coffee. Just looking at the menu, you can tell the chef actually puts thought into the dishes -- definitely not your typical quick meal spot. Every plate has its own little twist. Sandstorm Chicken Wings -- The name got me first, and they did not disappoint. Super crispy coating with parmesan cheese and golden garlic breadcrumbs. Way more layered in flavor than your usual wings -- and yes, finger-licking good! Classic Bolognese Rigatoni -- Loved this one. The meat sauce is slow-cooked for 8 hours, so it's extra rich and flavorful, with chunky meat bits. Plenty of parmesan and fresh basil -- toss it all together and it's seriously satisfying. Arugula Salad with Sesame Dressing & Orange -- I'm a big arugula fan, and this salad was such a nice fresh bite. The sesame dressing is nutty and fragrant, the orange and radish add brightness, plus the sunflower seeds and crispy noodles give it a nice crunch. Bruh, imagine being completely sold outta food like 2-ish hours into food service. I thought it wouldn't be possible, so that's why we thought the closed sign in front was a mistake, alas it wasn't. I've honestly only seen this happen at pop up events or super limited collaboration cafes with merch/etc. Not for like an actual brick and mortar restaurant. And even with actual brick and mortar restaurants, the ones who know ball, since they know they have limited hours, limited food selection/supply/staff and labor/whatever, they have a reservation based system that allows for better management, distribution of resources/staff, or to at least let the masses know. For awhile now, I've been wanting to try this place out since it was recommended as a new spot in RH, but timing was just horrendous. I'm sure it's a fine dining establishment, but this kinda just sucked overall and, again, a form of heads up on their Yelp page regarding limited availability, a reservation system or something woulda been helpful. The girl who took care of us was attentive, giving us recommendations and answering any questions we had. I had the Truffle Angus Fried Rice with Bone Marrow. The flavors meshed so well together and I liked that it had a slight kick to it. Tried this lovely new spot today and left with a happy heart and full belly. I had the iced black coffee and their signature Bolognese rigatoni--so good! The coffee was smooth and not bitter, and the rigatoni was perfectly al dente. The meat sauce was rich and layered--you can tell the chef really put thought into it. The space is bright, clean, and full of charm. Every table has a little blackboard with a handwritten positive quote by the owner, Kate. Our family stumbled upon this spot kind of randomly, but wow -- it turned out to be such a gem. First off, the shakshuka was everything I hoped for. The eggs were perfectly poached in a tangy tomato sauce, with creamy avocado on top, and came with a side salad that was actually fresh (not just some sad greens) and a crunchy slice of toast. Comfort food but still felt light. Then came the grilled steak grain bowl, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was one of the most satisfying bowls I've had. The steak was juicy and cooked just right, laid over grains, roasted Brussels sprouts, crispy onions, and broccolini. It had that "I feel healthy but also totally happy" kind of vibe. And okay -- can we talk about the Sandstorm Chicken Wings?? Crispy, seasoned perfectly, and somehow stayed light instead of oily. This restaurant recently just opened and they serve fusion food of American and Italian inspired dishes with an Asian touch! Everything we tried was incredible but I must rave about their salad. For the main dishes we had the seafood pasta, the salmon (cooked to perfection), and the grilled chicken with veggie and mushroom sauce ( substituted the mash for wild rice). We just had lunch at the newly-opened Pot & Wok (5.10.25).  I 'never' say this but, my dining experience was BETTER than I was expecting.  The lunch menu is simple and makes it easy to choose something.  We had 1) Grilled Steak Veg Grain Bowl ($26) and 2) African "Dan Dan" Noodle ($18).  The noodles were served al dente and had a very interesting spicy flavor to it.  African meets Chinese flavors, I guess.  The flavor is hard to describe in words, but it was spicy and tasty.  The steak was a hanger steak served on the rarish side, with deep fried brussels sprouts, broccolini and extremely tasty rice.  I couldn't tell you what was in the rice, but it was awesome!  Steak was tender and flavorful.  Everything about this dish worked well together.  Kate waited on us and I have to say the service was professional, friendly, engaging, conversational and attentive.  I'm guessing she's one of the owners. Overall, it was a pleasurable dining experience, the exact 'recipe' for what it takes a new restaurant to survive and thrive in a highly competitive environment.  Keep up the good work.  I have no doubt you will succeed. read more

The restaurant itself was pretty clean and the staff seemed friendly, but the food really missed the mark for me. There were a few flies flying around the tables, as well, which wasn't enjoyable. The french fries came out burnt, hard, and overcooked. The steak was too raw to enjoy. The popcorn chicken portions were lacking and had more kale than chicken. Overall, the food didn't taste very fresh or flavorful, and I couldn't really tell what the restaurant was going for -- its Chinese Italian fusion didn't hit the spot as it missed all the marks on taste and quality. I honestly hope business here picks up. The food just screams quality and love. I have now been there twice: once for dinner and once for lunch, and I can say that I am still thinking about their dinner pork chop entree. I'm no a huge pork chop fan, but if pork chop was always made the way SamK makes it, I think I would be. My family: young to old have been impressed by their meal offerings. I have such confidence in this chef's ability, that I am looking forward to trying something new each chance I get to go back, before circling back to the things I've already tried! I know that the food does take a while to come out, and I have no idea if it's a one man show in the kitchen, but when your entree is served, I think any feelings of frustration that your belly was grumbling about, may give way to grace and forgiveness once you've laid eyes on the undeniable care that your food was made with, and that first bite of perfectly seasoned goodness. I love that the menu was very simple and easy to read, not overbearing with too many options. The dishes we ordered were truly flavorful and did not disappoint. One bite and my eyes rolled to the back of my head with an instant burst of flavor. The side of chicken was pretty amazing; very juicy and clean. First of all, we are weirdly positioned right in the middle of the restaurant like we're the centerpiece. Then, the server randomly hands us 3 waters for our group of 6 and just leaves.. like are we sharing 1 water for 2 people or? We just order through the phone and we then have to flag her down for more water. Also, we only ordered 1 cold brew and she gave us 2. Then... we are asked to move tables and they situate us less awkwardly. All the food took about 15 minutes to arrive, except for the Truffle Mushroom Alfredo Fettuccine. Look at the picture, my family is the type to wait for everything to arrive before eating... but this truffle pasta took nearly an hour to come out. Someone in my family already finished their dish! Maybe the chef was hunting for the truffle in the wild. To add on, the server never apologized or acknowledged that my family was sitting there and staring for that whole bit. She just came over and said "you're missing the Truffle Pasta".. no reason for the wait or anything and hurried away. After about another 20 minutes.. the pasta comes out and it's the smallest portion I've ever seen for $20+. Perhaps good for a casual lunch. The food is great, but definitely not worth waiting an hour for. We showed up just 30 minutes before closing with a party of 18, and the owners were kind enough to keep the place open for us. Even after closing, we stayed another 30 to 40 minutes, and they were totally fine with it really welcoming and patient. They catered to us thoughtfully, making sure every dish was great. We told them to take their time because we understood they were short-handed it was just the husband and wife working side-by-side, one in the kitchen and the other taking orders and cleaning tables. The food was actually really good! It's a cozy spot, perfect for chilling and hanging out with a good group. I hope they keep it up because this place definitely deserves the attention. Yesterday, my wife and I decided to go out to dinner for our 52nd Anniversary. I need to say this was one of the most special dinners I had in 52 years. The restaurant, SAMK, on Labin Court, Rowland Heights (formerly Pot & Wok) was opened for about two months by two professionally trained chief/pastry chief. The two young owners made our special event even more special. The food is presented beautifully and the taste matches the presentation. The foods are delicious and well presented, ingredients were so thoughtfully picked and it was all fresh. The staff were very welcoming and they were aways available. The drinks were a major part of my experience, there were so many kinds of drinks and it tasted amazing. The dessert was also very tasty.
