The pub is situated a few minutes' walk from the castle and cathedral at the top of the hill in Hradčany, just opposite the Loreto church. It's easy to find as the exterior has impressive baroque murals. Inside, it's rather plainer, with painted walls, simple, dark wooden benches and a tiled floor. Although it's location inevitably means that it's full of tourists, it makes few concessions to them: this is essentially a beer bar, and the main draw is its excellent Velkopopvicky Kozel beer, in light (tmavé) and dark (světly) variants, as well as Pilsner Urquell, all served in 0.5l glasses. They serve a limited range of hearty Czech snacks, including some vegetarian items (various forms of cheese). The staff are efficient and workmanlike rather than especially friendly; expect a hard stare if you just have one beer! Locals tend to sit at the front, with visitors at the back. However, the old-fashioned feel means that it is one place you really ought to try is you're in the area, and it makes a great antidote to the touristy crush of the castle. If it's open, stroll afterwards to the Loreto church, one of Prague's most over-the-top Baroque creations and containing the body of St Wilgefortis - a few beers to fortify you first may not be a bad idea, in fact! It's quite a hike up the hill to the Hradčany area, but trams 22 and 23 will take you (via a scenic, circuitous route) to within a few hundred metres, making the climb for you!

Old-Fashioned is often my go to and the one here is one of the better ones I've had. Cash-only place, which is common in Prague. Would recommend this to anyone who wants some quality time w/ their drinks as it's quaint and not noisy. No worries though -- I just came back later and checked in without any issues. Once inside, I grabbed a poncho and was ready to go. The entire room being made of ice was really cool (literally), and having a bartender inside serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks made it even more fun. I made sure to take lots of pictures -- it's such a unique setup and perfect for photos. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience that I think everyone should try at least once. Just be prepared -- it's an ice bar, so it's cold, and most people will probably last about 15-20 minutes. I made it 15 minutes and was ready to head out . We asked for a refund for the entry and drinks, but a somewhat indifferent and slightly arrogant receptionist simply referred us to an email address where we could complain to her manager. After a week and a half and three emails, there has been no response. It's therefore hard to see this as anything other than a calculated money machine equipped with incredibly poor staff and poor management. This stands as the only bad experience in a fantastic and hospitable city.

The string is unique, very artsy in my opinion, combining indoor/outdoor seating. Very open and comfortable, appeared to be many locals taking in a morning coffee or breakfast and working. They have a large cocktail list (almost too large, it was hard to decide!) which are all reasonably priced. It has a 'studenty' feel to it, possible because of the price and it was fairly international when we went in! The music was a bit of a mix, I seem to remember, although I can't really remember much of it (ahem) so that might mean it was inoffensive and generic! The bartender spoke good enough English, but seemed a little agitated at times. Note there are three floors, with different beers on tap on each level - look around before you sit down. Another idea - translate the web page with the menu before you go, then you'll know what you want.
