It's not the cheapest of places to buy your meat, but I think even Scrooge would spend a few quid here every new and then. Once inside the shop the range on offer is vast and all very tempting. The staff will generally ask you what you want, but don't feel you have to refrain from browsing they won't rush you with your order so take your time to find what you want. Whilst many of the goods aren't that cheap the entry level goods here are still of very high quality and unless you really want to treat your taste buds should suffice. All in, this is a high end butchers that really delivers on quality.

I've bought an amazing lamb rack, steaks, sausages and short ribs from here. All of which have been outstanding. Firstly, the sausages. Crombie's are famous for them! And they are delicious. Well worth the trip just to stock up on sausages. Everything else, the quality of the meet has been great. I've recently purchased a sous vide machine so anything that can be slow cooked for hours is going from Crombie's butcher straight into my machine for hours on end. One thing, it's expensive compared to what you'd get from the grocery stores. I've found the quality to be way better but be warned- it might put a dent in your wallet. Great selection of marinades, ready to cook pies and other savoury pastries, and service is always friendly and helpful.

There are many different varieties to choose from and they range from the traditional (pork, chipolatas, Scotch beef) to the exotic (boar, pork and stilton is an inspired and tasty combination). Asides from sausages, they do the usual butcher cuts of meat (steaks, lamb etc) and meals for you to heat at home if you can't be bothered cooking. From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

The best thing about this butchers is the value for money. Not only are you sold superior goods, but at normal prices - why would you buy meat elsewhere? Prices start at just over £3 per kilo for ribs and the first boneless item comes in at just under £4 per kilo for some pork shoulder. As you move up the quality of the meat the price remains very good value for money as it moves up with the quality and this is what makes this place so popular. If you are on the south side of Edinburgh, it's only 20 minutes or so in the car to get here and is well worth the effort. I had a couple of hours free, so I drove out from Edinburgh for lunch. On the menu, the hake and fennel fishcakes caught my eye, so I ordered those with some sweet potato wedges on the side. The fishcakes were delicious (even if they did have to buy those in), as were the sweet potato wedges. With a Belvoir ginger beer to wash it down, I was well satisfied. As I wasn't in a rush, I decided to follow with a slice of polenta cake and a coffee. The cake was a little on the dry side - I guess maybe polenta cake isn't their best-seller - and the coffee, although perfectly fine, was maybe not the best I've ever had. But the place was quiet, and for under £20 it was a pretty reasonable and high-quality lunch. So do go and patronise this place, they are doing wonders on a shoestring to promote organic farming practices and food; it so deserves your support.
