I'm a big Wagamama fan, I'm going to say this upfront. I think it's the perfect "pre-activity" restaurant. Going to the cinema? Have a Wagamama first. Theatre? You can fit in a Wagamama! Got a spare hour before you gotta catch a train? You've got loads of time to fit in a Wagamama!! The speed of service in this restaurant is always one of my main deciding factors in coming here, and it's a bonus that the food is very tasty too!
Look, I'm not sure how "authentic" the Wagamama japanese cuisine is, but it's tasty and that's what matters to me! I reckon that Wagamama is possibly the reason Katsu curry is now so popular in the UK - it's one of their best dishes on the menu (both chicken and veg options!). They've recently had a menu overhaul, and I thought this was as good a reason as any for my most recent trip (also we had a hour or two between the cinema and the theatre on a very event filled date night!). Wagamama takes the communal seating approach to dining, so no matter how many free tables there may be, you will probably find yourself seated next to other diners. If this is a big no-no for you, then you're probably not going to enjoy it here! Personally I don't mind this at all! The communal benches have cool little shelves underneath for you bags and there are hooks located around the restaurant for your jackets (if you're brave enough!). Staff are super attentive here so be prepared to be asked for your drink order as soon as your bum hits that bench. My go to drink is always the peach ice tea which I really like, but this visit I thought it was quite watery. As your server will warn you dishes can come at different times so this isn't really your standard course by course restaurant. I decided to go with the yasai cha han with a breaded aubergine steamed bun for my side and my S.O. got the chicken and prawn cha han (sans prawns) with a side of wok fried greens. I like that the cha han dishes now come with brown rice because I prefer that, but you can ask for white if that's your thing! The portion sizes are pretty large which is good and the cha han dishes come with a side of pickles, yum! I thought the cha han was a tad dry and i had to put lots of soy sauce on it for my taste, but otherwise it was tasty with lots of veggies and tofu! I was very excited for my steam bun as my sister had talked it up. It had the perfect amount of aubergine and mushrooms on it with the tasty asian mayo. The bun itself was a bit sticky, I had to peel it off the plate with my knife, and it's not the best steamed bun I've ever had in my life, but it was still enjoyable! My S.O. was looking forward to his wok fried greens but found that they weren't as nice as he's had before. He liked his cha han "okay" but he's notoriously difficult to please, haha.
Overall I'd say that this visit wasn't as great as I've had in the past, perhaps the staff are still getting used to the new menu, perhaps we went on an off day. I'd still really recommend Wagamama as a quick restaurant which serves up tasty food and has extremely helpful and friendly staff. read more
