Halal Steak Ramen with an extra half egg and Tonkotsu Ramen
    Alex D.

It was a chilly day and we had walked past this restaurant the day before and it was packed so we stopped in and this Ramen hit the spot. The noodles are creamy and delicious. The egg is always my favorite part. The Steak had a little more pepper then I would have preferred but that was my only downside.

My favourite place to always get sushi and ramen and the food is 10/10 but today te staff I felt were not paying attention to customers and we waited a long time to get served and get the bill.

Like the small style that reminds me of trips to Japan, sitting next to your neighbors and enjoying a warm bowl of ramen. Many Japanese students came in from the university down the street for lunch while I was there. Nice staff and the ramen was perfecto! They have lunch specials and plenty of other meal options such as sushi. Added to my must stop in collection for Edinburg!

    Vegan hell ramen

Pretty killer ramen joint with 5 vegan ramens to choose from on top of their other ramens. We stopped in for lunch; one of us ordered the vegan black garlic ramen, the other the vegan hell ramen (£13.50 each). The vegan black garlic had a light but fairly complex broth that was punctuated by the black garlic. The vegan hell ramen was spicy with nice complexity and depth. Each ramen had a nice portion of thin, medium-firm noodles, 2 pieces of vegan bacon, 2 pieces of bok choy, seaweed, and bamboo shoots. Good portions, great flavours, though a little bit overpriced. Extremely friendly, fast, hospitable service. Highly recommended ramen joint, especially for the vegan options.

    HELL RAMEN

Incredible ramen shop very near to Old Town and University of Edinburgh. It can get busy but going right when they opened meant we were sure to get a spot. The shop is quite small on the top floor, with bar style seating and only 2 tables, however there are a few more tables downstairs to increase their capacity. Staff were very nice, helpful, and funny. Free green tea and water waiting for you at every seat is a plus! They have a good number of ramen options including classics and some new twists. We ordered the Hell Ramen and Miso Ramen. The Hell Ramen was predictably quite spicy - but perfectly so, right at the point where it was difficult to eat but still enjoyable, with the spice a serious component but not drowning out the rich flavor. The pork was *perfectly* done, tender and delicious. This was 5/5 ramen. Unfortunately, the Miso ramen was a big letdown. It was watery and unremarkable, and really didn't live up to it's potential. It's hard for miso ramen to stand up to a rich pork broth but this ramen didn't even try. 2/5. Miso ramen issue aside, the experiance was overall nice and I would love to return and try some of the other dishes.

    Veggie Gyoza

This place is amazing! I tried Gyoza for the first time and I can't get over how good it was. My three friends and I all ordered the Miso Ramen and we all thoroughly enjoyed or meals. Matthew was our server and he was awesome and extremely accommodating to allergies too. Maki also had nice music and cute flowers, super cute spot!! 10/10 would go again

    Tonkotsu

If you are anywhere close to one GO! Visiting from the states and this was one of the best dishes I had over a three week period. Well priced, good service.

Never believe that a chain british japanese restaurants could be good. This is highly recommended more than itsu and wasabi and yo! Hahhaaha come here if you crave for a japanese food and has nowhere to go. Cheers! Recommended and would go back!

    Black Tonkotsu Ramen!

Had the black tonkotsu ramen. It was pretty good overall. I consider myself a ramen traditionalist so I may be a bit more critical than the average customer. The pork slices were soft and flavorful but perhaps a bit too much on the anise seasoning. The noodles were firm and cooked well. The soup was just a tad too salty. It could have also been served at a slightly hotter temperature. The waitress was professional and service prompt.

The ramen, gyoza, and edamame were solid, and the Hell Ramen was indeed spicy as advertised. Being sick and full didn't assist my experience, but I'd still come back if I lived in the area.

YASSSS! We actually spotted the sister restaurant Maki Maki on the main street after a trip to the Festival Theatre and went back there the following day. It was full so they sent us around the corner to Maki and Ramen and I'm soo happy we found this place. It's been soo long since I've had a nice big, homely bowl of Ramen so I was really looking forward to getting stuck in. It's a small, but perfectly formed restaurant that takes me back to my time in Japan. Stools and high tables along the side with a few booths for groups. Real canteen style. The wall paper was the neon signs of Tokyo. Free water and Green tea and a great selection of other drinks at really reasonable prices. Spicy miso and soy on the table which is so lovely to have as you'll pay for the spicy miso in most other places. The menu was just perfect for me! Ramens, Goyza, sashimi, sushi and even matcha icecream and mochi balls for desert for £1!! I wish I could express in words how much I loved this place! But I did leave a message on a post-it note on the wall of restaurant like many other visitors. We had the salmon broth (like ramen but with dashi base) with some octopus balls to start and kimchi salad (small portion of pickled cabbage). Yum! All of it was just soo yum and I was just soo happy to be there! Really reasonable prices with starters/sides around £4-6. I wish I lived in this city as I'd be there all the time! I highly recommend this place !!

Anytime on vacation, I venture out in search of the best beef noodle soup. Truthfully, Edinburgh was the LAST place I thought I'd find what would ultimately be...the best dam noodle soup I've ever had. Rooted from the Sichuan & Chongqing flavors, the food is bold, fiery and wholesome. We had quite a Few offerings from the menu, but what stood out the most, was of course the beef noodle soup. Thick, chewy hand pulled noodles in a rich, bold & spicy broth. Generous amount of beef and topped off perfectly with peanuts...that's how you know it's real! The broth is on the thicker side, making it a very hearty meal. It was so delicious, we came back the next day for more. Service is on the slow side, some dishes don't all come out at the same time but staff is friendly. Signage outside is difficult to see, so look closely. Highly highly recommended. This was certainly the best beef noodle soup I've ever had and honestly, I'd fly over here just for that!

A very busy place. I'm not too familiar with this type of cuisine but husband was very happy. One little gripe is they don't serve wine by the glass just the bottle. They were out of gin and also Jack Daniels. I am guessing they might only have tiny individual bottles. Husband was happy because they served asahi beer and it was a good price.

We chose the latter due to the fact that I'd never heard of this UK chain of Japanese restaurants. I also found the menu to be unique with the dietary-friendly halal, vegetarian, and GF offerings. Not many Japanese restaurants have that. We were welcomed in with the sound of a taiko drum. They tap the drum when entering and before being seated. I found it odd at first, but now I understand after reading about this traditional welcome. The restaurant was filling up fast. We thankfully were seated in a 2 seater booth by the window. It was completely full by the time we left. All the ramen choices looked fantastic. I've never seen such a huge variety of unique flavors. I was drawn to the Shio Yuzu and Shio Truffle. It was a tough decision, but the truffle won that battle. It ended up being a great choice. The truffle really brings out the flavor of the rice in the noodles. Although, these noodles were already pretty special. I think they make them here. There was a good amount of chicken, and that ramen egg was absolutely delicious. A perfectly made custardy yolk. I should have ordered an additional one. My husband's Spicy Chicken Teriyaki with rice was good, but not great. His words, not mine. I didn't try it because I'm not a fan of teriyaki sauce. The chicken gyoza were also pretty good. I was also super happy with the Yuzu Ice Tea from the Mocktail menu. It was very mojito-esque without the rum. A refreshing drink. The service was good. The atmosphere is very lively. I didn't really get a chance to take pictures inside. The décor is lovely, but more enjoyable when it's less crowded. I'd revisit it again if ever in this region. I may have to try their Black Garlic Tonkotsu ramen next time.

They didn't have any Spicy smashed cucumber on the day we visited, disappointed. The pork ribs were good, skip the kimchi, not worth it. Steak Teriyaki Soba - steak was chewy, the soba had no flavor or seasoning. Pulled Shiitake Donburi - as the name says, it was for shittake, they gave us the beef. Unfortunately, the waitress was no where to be found to let them know, so we just let it go. Thai beef salad - it never came out, then as we tried to hunt the waitress down, she came by and said our order went to the next table and they are remaking it. The problem, the next table didn't get our food, as they had ramen and soba. It seems like the waitress forgot to place the order in the system. Service - they need major improvements. Only saw two staff working the front and by the time we got our food, 75% of the tables were occupied. Flavor - they need to do some major work on improving their flavor profiles of all their dishes. The last time I was at Wagamama was over 15 years ago in London and I walked away with a great experience. Maybe the over expansion brought their quality down, but this location needs some major overhaul.
