Really enjoyed this stop to see the gushing waterfalls. The drive up is pretty windy and the road can get very narrow so drive with caution. There is a small parking lot past the lookout, but you may have to wait for parking as people are coming and going. My kids especially liked that they just had to get out of the car to see the waterfalls. Not much walking required. read more

It's easy to forget about the rest of the world and just take in the tranquility of the island. Also, there are locals at the parking lot selling homemade banana & mango bread, and also cold guava & mango juice. This is a trip worth taking. read more

Absolutely gorgeous falls and worth the hike down. Not recommended for new hikers, families, or someone with bad knees. It's a little scary and hard to find the correct path at first but once you find it you can get your way down. It's very steep, lots of mosquitos on the way, however you can easily grab onto branches and trees and slowly work your way down. It's not necessarily "hard" just need to be careful because it can be slippery. Once you reach the bottom, it's like an oasis from a movie. Birds chirping, beautiful falls, a pond of water with a small stream. It's like white noise in real life. You can swim and enjoy to cool fresh water, and would be perfect for a picnic. The beauty is surreal. Takes roughly 30 minutes to hike down, maybe 25 to get back up. Going back up, isn't nearly as difficult and easier to make your way up than down. Hiking shoes or hiking sandals are definitely recommended. It's technically a forbidden hike, however there are definitely people that do it and get down there. When you get back up, enjoy a nice fresh coconut from a local vendor. read more

Wailua Falls is a bit further inland and takes longer to drive to than the other falls, but you get a much closer view to the waterfalls. There's technically no sanctioned path down to the actual waterfall, but it seemed like a good amount of people were trekking down anyway. There are also locals selling fresh coconuts and banana and pineapple bread. No bathrooms are available here. Parking isn't bad, but their lot is small and the spots are also squishy. read more

I'm a huge waterfall hunter and Wailua Falls blew me away. We came here about 2 weeks after the immense rainfall in 2018 and we didn't know if we'd be able to hike down to the water. Nonetheless, one of the locals told us the safest way down and we sure listened. It was really slippery and very muddy but it was completely worth it. I'd suggest bringing bug spray, water shoes and some water. The hike down didn't take more than 30 minutes and we got to swim under the falls. I love it! We also got to meet a cute pig. Make sure to respect nature. read more

This was a nice reprieve from our bustling stay on Kauai, thus far. From day one hubbs and I have been oot and aboot exploring the island, mostly the northern and eastern coasts. Today is our third day here and we decided to take it easy because we had a rough time on the Kalalau Trail yesterday and are still super achy, sore, tired and steadily reminded of our ages. Today, we slept in (until 7 AM HST because we're still jetlagged...score!), ate brekkie late (8 AM) and lounged in bed until past noon. We then sat in the hot tub while watching our Pats kick some Gang Green #PatsAllDay and had a bite to eat and a couple drinks. After our small snack, we decided to venture off the resort property to check out the Wailua Falls since it's a short 20 minute drive west of our accommodations. We're visiting during the winter season so the mountains produce a lot of consistent mists and cloudy conditions so we were hoping for the best considering how late it was in the day (4 PM). Once you make the turn onto Maalo, you want to drive very carefully; the road is über curvy and narrow. It's two lanes and you're driving super close to what resembles cornfields; so close that I rolled up my windows just in case a pair of gray arms reached out and snatched me out of my passenger side seat. You also gave to contend with traffic approaching in the opposite direction and it seems some tourists are in more of a hurry than other. Note: Just about everywhere on the island, there are signs imploring drivers to take it easy and not to rush. The driving speed can change twenty times during a one hour drive and it's to make sure people stay safe. Once we got to the end, the beauty of the landscape is overwhelmingly apparent, even from the car. When you walk up towards the ledge to view it all, you feel a sense of awe. It's beautiful and yes, because it's "winter" on the island, it's quite cool and breezy but the wet weather lends itself to the powerful flow of the falls. This is the waterfall that was featured on Fantasy Island (PSA if you don't know what Fantasy Island is, you still have Similac on your breath). They're majestic and forceful, boasting their naturally fueled strength, yet calming to all who stand to witness. We took a few snaps, stood back and took it all in and crossed this stop off of our to-do list. It's worth the small drive and it's an effortless spot on the island to enjoy. Please don't take a page from my hubb's book. There are signs that clearly state that the cliffside is unpredictable and can crumble. Stay on the paved part of the lookout and DO NOT hop over the barrier. You can see just as well with the 3 foot difference in distance. Be safe and enjoy! read more

"De Plane, De Plane!" I'm showing my age, but there used to be a TV show called Fantasy Island where majestic Wailua Falls shows up in the credits. We drove to the lookout to get a nice view of the falls. The falls were powerful, and surrounded by lots and lots of greenery. For some weird reason, the water was mostly white but had some slight yellow tint. There's not a whole lot to do here besides watching the falls. Parking lot is tiny and requires a 3-point turn to get out. Watch out for roaming chickens. read more

There is parking here and a walkway that will get you to the side of the falls. We saw many people sneaking through the fence to go down towards the falls. The people we saw coming up from the fenced area were covered up to mid-calf in mud. So, if you do hike here, it looks to be pretty tricky and there are signs there that say that you can easily slide on the mud. For those that don't hike, it's still a beautiful view from the road. read more

Just a few minutes from Lihue Airport in Kauai, we drove to this seemingly remote site that has retained its beauty as a natural wonder. Falling 173 feet, a twin set of waterfalls can be seen from a roadside lookout near the top of the ridge. What further inspection led me to discover was that the falls that appeared on the right side had another falls emerging from within the rock face further down in the water's path. The road to this park is narrow, so you will need to pay attention to your driving to avoid other vehicles coming your way. There is a small parking lit at the site of the falls, but most of the cars parallel parked on one side of the road, then used the parking lot to turn around. The land around the falls has been protected by erecting fences to keep people from wandering as well as protecting them from falling. Hubby & I drove by Wailua Falls to take some photos. There was a small parking lot that we parked in and got to for photos. There were several other people walking around as well. There are scenic places for photos on both sides of the street. We didn't try to venture off and hike down any trails there but it was a nice area with nice views. This beautiful double waterfall is famous for being used in the opening credits of the TV show "Fantasy Island". It is just north of Lihue and is a worth a stop if you are exploring the island of Kauai. However, expect to spend no more than a few minutes there as there is nothing there but a viewpoint area for the falls. Also, the lookout does not provide the best angle for viewing - it is difficult to see all the way to the pool of water that it runs down into. read more

Pretty falls that you can see from the parking lot level (although it's covered by brush a little). We didn't hike down, but it looked like a nice oasis for swimming if you do hike down. If you're lucky, you'll encounter a vendor in the parking lot selling pearl jewelry from his trunk. This is where you'll encounter a man who will instruct you to pick any white or pink pearl from his table. Make sure to pick a nice one because you get to keep it for free. He'll then instruct you to put it between your teeth in an effort to educate you how to tell it's a real pearl, and then he'll get angry at you when you don't put it in your mouth because it's COVID and you don't know where it's been. Beautiful place. Hike down was a bit sketch since it had been raining the past few days before our adventure but easy enough. Wouldn't recommend if you have slippery shoes or no sense of balance. At the bottom, you can feel the sacredness of the falls and just bask in the feeling of peace they give you. Water was cold so we definitely did not go in but it was a wonderful place to sit and meditate for a while. read more

I love falls that you don't have to hike to! You just drive right up to the falls and park in their tiny parking lot. The falls were so beautiful. The air felt crisp and it felt nice to just stand there and snap a few pics and enjoy the scene. A few people were going through the hole in the gate and hiking down. They said it was about a 10-15 minute steep hike down but there were ropes to help you back up. I saw people of all ages hiking down, so it must not be too hard. Definitely take the time to stop here. You won't regret it read more

Great place off the regular path. Be careful not to speed on your way to the falls as the roads are narrow and there are other people on the road even though it may not seem like there are. Please be respectful. Once you reach the falls, you may see people exiting areas in which signs are posted not to enter. Enter at your own risk. There are paths which lead to the falls. I haven't been there in years and during this trip, I just took my daughters to see the falls. There are beautiful views no matter which way you look :) There is free parking but the lot is small. Situated close to the airport, this is a great way to kill time while taking in some nature. After all, you can't visit Hawaii and leave without having seen a waterfall. There is a small parking lot at the end of the road. Finding a parking spot is a crapshoot. If it's full, just wait a little. Mostly people just come for a photo op and they leave in under 5 minutes (or at least that's what we did). Waterfall by the side of a paved road probably have you thinking that it won't be that impressive. Honestly, this is better than some of the waterfalls I've seen at the end of a hike. 2016 May 11th 7 40 am. Clear morning, dry parking lot. No rain prior day. After parking, we walked toward the entrance and at the end of rock wall, we jumped over and took the trail down hill closer to the metal fence. (Don't do this) This is a quickest way to go down and possibly most dangerous way. Yes, there are tree roots and limbs and branches and rocks but one miss step and you will be going down at least 30 feet straight. Instead of this, walk down the fence line another 50 feet till you see a opening just large enough for one person to crawl thru. From this point, you can easily get on the right trail which are lot safer. Yes, it's steep but with good traction, going down will be pretty quick with the assist of tree branches, roots and ropes (thank you to the person or group who has placed it there). We saw two girls with flip flops made to the base and one guy was barefooted. Go out of your way and experience something different but play it safe! read more

Stunning Waterfall and easy to get to. Very simple: drive here, park in the small parking lot, walk 30 feet to the lookout point, and enjoy. Oh yeah and take the obligatory pictures. Driving Directions: Take Highway 56 to Ma'alo Road (Highway 583). The waterfall is located at the end of Ma'alo Road (like a 10 min drive). The waterfall was incredible. Went to check it out on the last day of the week long trip in Kauai with my cousin. The falls were so majestic and very easy to get to off of Highway 56. There is a small parking lot and people can also park their cars on the side of the road without interrupting the traffic. The thing I wanted to do was to go down to the bottom of the falls where the river flowed to the ocean but a lot of the area was fenced off. There were many signs that read danger, falling rocks, be careful, etc. Reading other comments I found out there was a way down with a rope. The trail down is said to be steep and muddy. The I visit again I will bring my hiking boots and do the trail down. read more

Just a short (3+ mile) ride from the highway in Lihue is one of the most beautiful & accessible waterfalls on Kauai. Dual waterfalls. Drive carefully, because the road narrows the closer you get to the lookout area. Ample parking if you don't arrive during peak hours. Get out of your car & wander around. Plenty of photo opportunities. Usually a few street vendors, too. We took home a bowl fashioned from palm fronds & some pineapple & banana nut bread (delicious, btw). Good way to spend an hour or so with one of the islands many scenic wonders. read more

In centuries past, Hawaiian men would leap off the top of the falls to prove their manhood. It's a peaceful place that's easily accessible. Be careful, however, hiking down to the bottom. "Angry" falls. The day after the infamous flood on Kauai (4/15), it's as if Waialua Falls was angry. Loud gushing muddy water pouring down.. it wasn't as beautiful as I've seen it before. It's a short drive up with a small parking lot at the end. At the beginning on the left is a gate where Kauai Back Country adventure tour vans will take you to the tunnels for mountain tubing. If your trying to see Waialua falls, stay on the main road. There are a couple lookout spots but not as beautiful as the one at the end near the parking lot. No public restrooms. read more

My husband and I honeymooned in Kauai and decided to sightsee on our first day there. We rented a car and drove to the Waimea Canyon State Park, and decided to check out the Wailua Falls on our way back to the resort. Let me tell you, do not skip these water falls on your trip! It is an easy drive to the falls. Not much parking, but with a little patience, you'll be out of your car and looking at the gorgeous views in no time. These were the largest water falls we saw in both Kauai and in Maui. Very touristy. You park (not much parking so be prepared to wait), walk over to the wall, and take a few pictures. There is no hiking, no swimming, and generally lots of people. We came on a very rainy day so it wasn't very crowded, but parking was still quite full. I do suggest coming because the view is gorgeous, but it is a 5 minute stop, not an adventure. read more

A beautiful sight to see. Located 4 miles inwards off of the main highway. The drive is full of greenery and a spectacular view of lush land. Be ready to drive through some twisty, windy roads. With one lane going and one land coming, you'll have to be careful around the bends. Luckily it's not that much of a hassle. The scenery makes up for the drive. Once you reach your destination, there is a small parking area which fits about 10 cars. There's a loop at the end where you can turn around to head out. From here you can view the falls and take pictures of this magnificent sight. If you're brave enough, you can even make your way down for a dip in the falls or for a nice hike. The trails get muddy so bring a pair of extra clothes as well as a buddy so you don't get lost. It's awesome being able to take picture of this beautiful waterfall. Lots of green, full trees that is one with nature. Great place for tourist as well as a place to relax and get a breath of fresh air. Be sure to take lots of pictures. read more

The drive is a bit sketchy at times, but so worth the view. The street ends in a parking area that is very small and hard to maneuver for the amount of people there to view the falls. It is st the edge of a steep cliff with signs present about safety risk, but the fence is open from people attempting to hike down. You can make it down, but as I said is very sketchy...well worth the drive for the beautiful waterfall and great pics. read more
