wife and I equipped with hiking boots, long pants, long sleeve shirts, and hiking poles

End of the line of the Kokee road. Whenever we visit Kauai, the first thing we do is drive to the 5148 feet elevation Pu'u o Kila Lookout. Drive here first before seeing the Waimea Canyon, as the fog frequently rolls in by late morning. Also, the parking lot is much smaller than the other 3 main lookouts: Puo Hinahina Lookout, Waimea Canyon Lookout, and Kalalau Lookout. If you are not a Hawaii resident, you pay by credit card $10 to park the vehicle, and $5 per person, to get a receipt with your license plate number and date of visit, to put on your dashboard. Credit card machines at all four main lookouts. Didn't see any parking enforcement vehicles, but why risk a parking ticket. If you are a Hawaii resident, get a free receipt at the Waimea Canyon lookout . The other reason for stopping here is to hike the Pihea trail, elevation 4284 feet, with a sign saying one of the wettest places on earth. But don't come here when it is raining, or just after a rain, as the trail will turn to impassable mud. We came here after a long dry spell, and there was minimal mud on the sun exposed areas. Wore a hat, long pants, hiking boots above the ankles, with professional hiking poles, carrying water bottles in day packs. First 30 minutes on the trail was over barren clay dirt sloping downwards. Afterwards the trail becomes severely degraded. We made it down only a mile before turning back. Deep ravines from water runoffs split up the trail, with muddy areas in the shaded forests down below. It's like the Grand Canyon, easy to get down, but the hard part is climbing back up. You have to have enough stamina to make it back up, or risk becoming a permanent resident. There are no bathroom facilities at this lookout, unlike the other three lookouts. Got to make a potty stop for the wife at the Kalalau lookout a few miles earlier.

This is around the corner from Kalalau Lookout. I don't think it matters which one you start at. Admittedly, I probably didn't do the best research, as I wore my flip flops here. So, if you really want to explore, wear closed-toed shoes! This place would be a great starting point with easy parking spots and bathrooms located by the Kalalau lookout. View of the stunning Kalalau Valley from the Pu’u o Kila Lookout.

This Waimea Canyon lookout is located at the end of Koke'e Road. Most visitors stop at the Kalalau Lookout at Milepost 18, but this one a couple of miles farther northeast is far superior. The Pu'u o Kila Lookout provides stunning views of the Kalalau Valley, the largest valley on the Na Pali Coast. People resided in the valley until 1919 but now its beach can only be reached by an 11-mile hike from Ke'e Beach on the northwest corner of Kaua'i, or by kayak. The views here were the best by far of the entire Waimea Canyon. It's well worth the effort to drive to the end of the road. Like the other lookouts, plenty of parking is available.

This was such a gorgeous lookout. We had to wait around a bit for the clouds to go away on the left side, but it was such a gorgeous view of the beach with steep mountains cascading down. The little walk down the muddy path is so unbelievable, slippery, but really an awesome walk. The right side has this gorgeous bright green landscape and the left is an even better view of the beach and mountains. Take the walk and soak it in!

Skip the Kalalau Lookout, continue down the road, and come here instead! The view point from Pu'u o Kila is far superior and there are usually less people here as well since it is a further distance. I promise the extra time in the car is well spent to get this incredible view. If I have one mental image that stays with me from my trip to Kauai, it is the view from this lookout point as you sit at the edge of the world and stare down into the valley and mountains and out into the Pacific ocean. The contrast of the lush greenery, Napali coast mountains, and the bright blue ocean is absolutely incredible. Take a look at these pictures and you'll see it is worth the drive all the way to the end of the road here.

Breath taking...wait on the clouds to clear.

Dont miss this view when visiting Kauai! Although this is the last lookout as you drive through the canyon it is well worth the trip. The colors will change based on sunlight, clouds and moisture...so stay a while and get some great photos.
