3-4-2020 I didn't…read moreknow I had the Epstein-Barr virus, let alone that it was causing me Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. My previous doctors missed the diagnoses when I complained about feeling tired, and I got rehearsed answers. They said things like get more rest and don't work so hard, which did nothing to help me or my symptoms. I began seeing Dr. Odama for other reasons, and during that time I told her about my feeling tired. She asked me pertinent questions which helped her diagnose me with EBV and CFS. What a relief to finally put a name to this after so long. She was the first doctor who didn't just hear what I was saying, but actually listened to what I said about feeling tired. Knowing my preference to do things naturally, Dr. Odama prescribed a regimen of natural supplements to help me lower the viral load. In my case it was a slower and somewhat spendy process. She gave me the option to continue on the same course, or use a prescription drug which she also had success with in treating EBV and CFS. My insurance company paid for the prescriptions, my viral load began dropping even more, and I started feeling significantly better. The symptoms of EBV and CFS can be debilitating, and I'm grateful that after years of misdiagnoses, Dr. Odama heard me and found the solution that was right for me. Dr. Odama thank you for giving me my energy, my productivity and my life back.

She took the time to really get to know me and diagnose me, She has such a kind and caring demeanor that you can't help but be put at ease. Her office is extremely clean, professional and very relaxing. When it comes to the actual acupuncture I was worried that the needles would hurt....fortunately she has such a light touch they didn't hurt at all! After placing the needles, she then said to relax for about 1/2 hour. Normally, that would be impossible. I thought it was going to feel like an eternity. What felt like moments later (which was actually the end of my session) she returned and asked how do I feel? I felt incredibly relaxed, serene and calm. The best part was that my symptoms improved!! If you are thinking of trying acupuncture, Dr. Odama is definitely the person to see!!

She does have a stoic demeanor that may come off as rude, but I don't believe she does this intentionally. And I also believe this is the reason why she may rub people the wrong way. If you prefer the kind of physician who is mushy and holds your hand with everything, Dr. Collins is not for you. Physicians are people too, and their personalities may reflect in their work. In my experiences with Dr. Collins, she was professional and did her job effectively. Ultimately, that's what I look for in a physician: someone who knows what they're doing. Each person has different needs, and some physicians just aren't a good fit. For me, Dr. Collins was a good fit. I should note that I do have a career in medicine, and so when I visit Dr. Collins I know what to ask and what to expect. I ask specific questions and I often don't need explanation on medical treatments or lab work. We have an understanding of each other and I think that's why she is a good fit for me. In the 5+ years that I've known her, she has been friendly and accommodating. She guided me through a healthy pregnancy and successfully delivered my healthy baby boy. The office is clean and new. Location is convenient because the diagnostic lab is right next door if you need to do lab work. Also, Sherry Louise at the front desk is the nicest person you'll meet!

Two days after my discharge letter, I received another letter discharging my daughter as well. Hers was accompanied by a demand for payment on a 12.00 copay from an office visit we had less than a week prior. I called to inquire about the charge as I made a cash payment in the office at her visit however I was only able to leave a message for the finance person. Three days later, no return call I received a letter saying my daughter's account had been turned over to a collection company. I believe my insurance company is in the process of an investigation that may include some sanctions against the practice. The agent handling my claim implied this was not the first mistake of its kind reported from their practice.

I have some medical training and I can tell you that Hawaii Family Physicians and their staff are a pleasure to work with and they r at the top of their game. All in all they are a first class medical operation that we are proud to be a part of as patients. They are also aware of alternative Eastern medicines and therapies. Definitely they r open and informed of what is new as well as time tested medicines and procedures. Shelly and Jamie Goldner

I no longer 'stay Kona,' but lived on the big island a number of years ago. while off island on a camping trip, my husband and I *both* got Lyme disease. we had identical symptoms: fever, malaise, brain fog, etc., but no tell-tale bullseye rash. there is no Lyme disease on hawaii island, and hubby's doctor told him he probably had the flu and to go home and rest up. dr pekala, meanwhile, told me to start taking antibiotics immediately and sent me out to get a test the following day. I said 'isn't that the wrong order?' 'not if I'm right. if I'm wrong, you take antibiotics you don't need for a few days while we wait for test results. if I'm right, you want to start taking them immediately.' he was right. I remember sitting in his office, in tears, wondering if I'd ever feel normal again. he said it would take time, and promised I would. I shared my antibiotics with my husband while we waited for test results (and for his physician to get on board). we both took antibiotics for SIX WEEKS and the lyme eventually went away. had he missed this diagnosis, we both could have ended up with chronic lyme, which is--apparently--miserable. I'm thrilled to report that I have no idea what that's like, as we were both cured, thanks to dr pekala. who would have guessed that a doctor on an island in the middle of the pacific would correctly identify a disease that doesn't even exist on that island? 'karen, infectious diseases are my hobby.' thank goodness they are, and thank goodness for dr pekala. 10/10, would go back.

By my 1st or 2nd treatment I was better and by my 5 visit the weakness in my leg and pain in my hip ( which I've been told by ortho's is radiated from my back) are just about completely gone. I too am in the medical field and I can say with complete confidence that Sun is absolutely knowledgable, he's conscientious and goes out of his way to insure that his patients have a positive outcome through this modality. I found a doctor (actually APRN) that I love and went my merry way. Then my APRN became sick and my intestinal issues returned. I thought that I would retry to get into the Koa Clinic. When I attempted to become a new patient, I was refused because I had refused to reschedule my appointment in March of 2024. Furthermore, during the text exchange (they do not answer phone calls) it became apparent that they still have my files in their records. I will be driving 2-1/2 hours to Hilo for treatment. There is nothing caring or considerate about the way this office is doing their business. UGH!!
