It is a time where the…read moretown shuts down a street (or two) and features the downtown businesses, arts and crafts, vendors, organizations, and just gives the town an excuse to venture downtown to see what they have been missing. Hubs and I live in Downtown WF so we walk to the event, which is a huge advantage with the folks I see looking for parking each year. This year, the event was on Taylor Street, Brooks Street, and White Street! Also a new addition to MITS was the Beer Garden at White Street Brewery. For those folks like me without kids, it was nice to browse around shopping for some pottery items, and then sit down at the Beer Garden, and watch the featured band on the main stage (also on White Street). For those of you with kids, this is a great place for the whole fam! Taylor street was mostly the "kid friendly" area with face painting, bike riding area, the WFFD has a mock burning house (always a crowd pleaser, oh and it is less intimidating and dangerous than it sounds), and overall good kid fun! If you live in the WF area, or surrounding area and want a great way to start off the spring/summer outdoor events, this is a great way to do it each year! It is usually held the last weekend of April, or first weekend of May. Another reason to love living in WF!

In addition to the information center, the back of the house also offers a small meeting room and art gallery. The exterior features a small but lovely garden with a sunken terrace accented by seating and a sundial, with crepe myrtle trees and abundant flowers in the warmer months. The few outbuildings also contain a public restroom, and the large, grassy lot is a popular place for taking photos. If you're looking for a glimpse of Hillsborough's past while exploring its present, stop in!

Parking is a bit of a pain but, once you find a spot (if you get desperate, just use a parking deck) and enter, take a number, and have a seat in the clean, modern seating area till your number is called. Bring a book and keep in mind that, if you come during your lunch break, you will most likely spend your entire break here, so plan accordingly. The folks who work in the water management office are nice enough, but they only kind of want to help you. In fairness, if there were a lobbyful of disgruntled customers there to argue about their bills, I might be reluctant to help them, too. My recent three visits were about attempting to bypass the $50 setup fee for our switch from a billing company to city water after our move from an apartment complex to a townhome. The water management office needs a really specific letter from your billing company to do this. It must be on letterhead and state that you have paid all of your bills on time, including the dates the service started and ended, and that you have paid your last bill. This was a challenge for me to procure, because I had been paying my bills to Vertex, a billing company, not an actual service provider, and they do not provide letters. Vertex sent me a detailed list of all the bills I've paid (on time) since we began working with them in 2004, but this was not sufficient for the City of Durham. Vertex doesn't, however, provide letters on letterhead because, again, they are just a billing company. I then got a letter, on letterhead, from the property manager at my apartment complex, but all they were willing to say was that I paid my last bill. That letter, even combined with my billing statement from the last six years, was not sufficient documentation to get out of the setup fee. That, in my opinion, is pretty lame. The City needs to have in place provisions for people like myself, who have been working with a third-party billing company for water services. All that said, it is really convenient to have auto billing---although they advise against it, so you can review your bill to make sure you don't have any leaks, etc.---so bring a voided check with you to set that up. You can also pay online if you prefer that. Bills are bimonthly, however, which is why I prefer autopay, because I'm afraid I'll forget.

The marker reads, "In the late 1860s freed slaves founded Oberlin, the largest Reconstruction-era black settlement in Wake County. By 1880 some 160 families lived in Oberlin Village, named in tribute to the Ohio college that supported education for Negroes. They established Wilson Temple United Methodist Church in the late 1860s, Oberlin School about 1873, Oberlin Baptist Church about 1880, and Latta University about 1892. They buried their loved ones at Oberlin Cemetery (est. 1873), which exists 400 feet to the east/north east." In 1858, Jesse Pettiford, a free Black tenant farmer, purchased 16 acres of land along New Hillsborough Road west of Raleigh. After the Civil War, Lewis Peck, a wealthy white grocer, divided his farm into lots and sold them to African Americans at about $50 per acre. This area became known as Peck's Place and later Oberlin Village. Oberlin Village is a testament to the resilience and determination of its residents, who built a thriving community from the ground up. The Raleigh Police Memorial was established in 2009 to keep the memory of alive of the men and…read morewomen who made the ultimate sacrifice serving Raleigh. The memorial currently honors eight individuals who died in the line of service. The officers showed a commitment to duty, honor, service and safety for those who live and work in Raleigh. The memorial is in Downtown Raleigh at the Raleigh Municipal Building near Nash Square. The memorial has a water feature and 21 pillars that represents the community from which the water flows. At sunset, the water table reflects the sky and illuminates the names in blue. I've not seen the memorial at night but will make sure I stop when I am in Downtown Raleigh at night to pay tribute to these officers.
