In the meantime all the platforms are still open as well as the ticket offices and information desk and almost all of the stores and cafes are still going strong. In terms of those stores and cafes they have what you might expect in most large stations; think Millie's Cookies, Upper Crust, M&S, Boots, Body Shop, WHSmiths and so on. Most platforms have at least one indoor seating area and some have cafes and vending machines too. This is a good thing, as it can certainly get a bit chilly on the platforms from time to time. It's quite a big station, with 17 platforms, many of them divided into sections. So if you're getting a smaller train, it's not likely to stop at all of platform 9 - it'll just be at platform 9B, for example. This is really handy because it means you know exactly where to wait and you don't end up legging it down the platform when you realise that only the front two carriages are actually going to go anywhere. The down side is that you can end up getting off the train very far away from the station exit when you arrive in Leeds.

Station Facts: - It is a Grade I listed building that opened in 1847 - The second busiest station in West Yorkshire, serving around 5 million people per year. - It is served by Transpennine Express who manage the station, with some local services provided by Northern - Get into Leeds in around 20 minutes Destinations served from the station include Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, York, Scarborough and Hull. If you're heading into London, your best bet would be changing at either Leeds, Sheffield or York. The facilities inside the station are basic at best, but the station is reasonable and perfectly fine for a town. The staff inside the station are friendly and up to the standard that you'd usually find around Yorkshire. 3*

It's just a shame that all the trains that pass through the station are the knackered old noisy Northern Rail diesel carriages from the 80's. The lines running through the station could really do with being electrified and the trains updated to nice, clean and quiet electric powered units.

Behind what is now the station, the original station used to be a shed by the waterside in which passengers would alight the train and walk across the road to the connecting boat on the river. The line is run by First TransPennine Express and has 3 stations. There are regular routes to Hull, York, Leeds, and Manchester with the new fast trains to London. You can buy your tickets at the station and there are waiting room and a small warm café.

The station has barriers and normally you won't go through without a ticket. On occasion the barriers are open. On weekends, I guess. There are actually a few entrances to the station. Plenty of car parking and bicycle parking available. Toilets are small, but clean and cubicles are of a good size. In the middle, between the platforms, there appears to be another waiting room, besides the heated one where Costa is located and I endured an hour of wait. In general the station seems well looked after! You will hear plenty of timely announcements and everywhere screens that show the train times.
