I went for a lung function test including a 6 minute walk study. First it was difficult for me to walk 6 minute because of intense pain in my legs and even though I was "allowed" to stop for a few seconds I was told to keep going. After the walk test was done I was told that I didn't need oxygen any more. Not at home or anywhere. (Only to be told later by a different doctor and nurses that I should be on home oxygen until at least after after a surgical procedure. The second test was in a kind of small chamber where the next breathing tests were done. I immediately informed the technician that I am extremely claustrophobic and she said "Everyone else can do it, so you can too. It seemed hardly anything I said mattered. So I pushed through and finished the first test, ending in severe distress and breathlessness. What really made me feel terrible and belittled was something the woman said "Ok, let's try again but stop with all the faces" referring to my facial reactions when I just couldn't breathe out more air into the machine and started coughing pretty bad. That made me feel like a child, or worse, that I was pretending not to be able to do the exercises. And the constant "I have done this for a long time and everyone else do this, so you can do it too." I'm sorry, but that was probably one of the most uncomfortable I felt with medical staff. I will give WakeMed 5 stars across the board because they saved my life and they actually listened. Every single doctor, nurse or imaging technician has treated me with nothing but kindness and respect at every appointment I have. But this was not the case here. I had a referral and this place is absolutely the worst. At first I had a Dr. Santos who had me do a home sleep study in which I did and was told I had to do another one for the CPAP machine; I guess to get the right pressure. After not hearing anything for about 3 months, I got a call from another Dr. who stated he was taking over for Dr. Santos. I was told I did not have to do another sleep study for the CPap machine, that he does things different than Dr. Santos and I would be getting one in the mail. This has been over 6 months and I still am waiting to hear from someone. If you want to be informed, and know what's going on do not go here. They do not communicate very well and seems to be a waste of time. I don't understand how professional business operate like this. They should be ashamed. And there is no way to get in contact, the message is outdated with no way to reach a live person. read more

I went with a referral from my doctor for respiratory problems. This office was supposed to do a pulmonary function test. The person who scheduled my appointment did not want to do the pulmonary function test until March (WaleMed covered my expenses until February). Her excuse was medical plan (Cigna), even though my medical plan called them. They let me see the doctor. He checked my lungs with the stethoscope, he said that I seemed to have asthma and he gave me a medicine for COPD that in the document said in bold "This medicine is not to treat asthma". This is not a place you want to go. You want someone that really cares about your health. read more

Had an absolutely horrible experience with this office. Got a referral from my PCP. WPP called me and scheduled an appointment (about 7 weeks into the future, late July). What they DIDN'T do was send me anything indicating which office my appointment was at. I went to what I thought was the office, CPAP disassembled and in a big bag, only to find that location closed. I called the only number I had, and had to wait on hold for 30 MINUTES. Then they dished out LOTS of attitude (if there was a slap button on my phone I would have used it). Turns out the only way to find out the office and the doctor is to create an account in their online portal. I said I wish I had known that. They tried to get me to create the account at that moment, but I explained that I was driving. Then they tried to give me an address to the correct location - verbally. DRIVING, I replied. So they offered to reschedule - in NOVEMBER! My family and I have had nothing but bad experiences with Wake Med. From now on I will be avoiding them, and telling everyone I know that they are dreadful. read more

First off- Dr. Santos and his nurses at the facility were very nice and that part of my experience was fine (that's the only reason it's not 1 star). After the sleep study I was told a specific supplier would call to setup an appointment and would have to do that to get a CPAP. After talking with the supplier found out it was going to be about $900 to get the unit. Still no problem - I understand it costs. Issue came when I didn't want to go that route- wanted to get the prescription and go my own way. Tried 6 calls/messages over 5 days, did talk with a person who couldn't help me and said I would get a call back. Three days later (and 2 more calls) I went through the directory and got someone in the finance department who was able to fax me the prescription 20 minutes later. Went on CPAP.com got the SAME unit for $539 the next day. My recommendation is to go somewhere else or if you go there - demand the CPAP prescription and get the machine anywhere else. Unfortunately over the last 10 years I've been in/out of Wake Med facilities quite a bit. This was the worst experience with the system. read more
