I wish I could give Walker's 4 stars to reflect the excellent job they have done with everything I have had framed there, but I bumped them down to three because of their annoying minimum purchase rules for using a credit card. You can't just drop in for a can of varnish unless you have cash in your pocket. For someone who does not carry cash, it just isn't worth the hassle when I can go to a big box art store like Michaels and put the same can of varnish on my visa. I'd like to support small businesses, but they need to make themselves available. That said, if you need a framing job quickly, they are the place to go. With the big art stores outsourcing everything including custom mats and Framer's Workshop gone from the east shore, this is the only place in Harrisburg where you can go and expect to get something custom made within a few days. The quality and selection are great. read more

Two prints framed here. The cost is MUCH less than costs quoted by Michaels or AC Moore. Totally worth the trip downtown.

I have been using Walker's for over 25 years for framing work and art supplies. I collect rare autographs and documents and Walker's is always the best when it comes to selecting mattes and frames for my pieces. I also do a lot of artwork and can always find a good array of paper, paint and other supplies at Walker's for my work. They are the best! read more

Art Depot has a decent selection for brushes, paint, pencils, markers, canvas and paper. Prices were slightly more than chains but in line with other independent art stores. Interestingly, an employee (owner?) was very chatty and overheard him mention he had some canvas that was shit and he discounted it and will no longer sell it. He had a lot of back story for a customer who wasn't even buying canvas. Maybe he didn't know and wanted to give the person a heads up before they bought crap canvas. Or maybe he thought the customer would know it was crap canvas and he wanted to preempt negative questioning. Anyway, completely recommend this store.

You can either bring your own basket or buy some containers there. They grow strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and more, it's impressive what they grow. I thought it was solely a berry farm but they've got everything! I picked my berries and they're plump, ripe and delicious! The only downside for me was darn mother nature not having everything ripe at the same time. It was painful walking by the blueberries knowing it was not yet season for them. It goes without saying that this is a good place to bring the kids, Its a nice outdoor activity on a summer day. Maybe picking their own green beans will make them want to eat some. This is a cash only location so make sure you bring it with you because there is no ATM on sight. The prices were very good. All in all, I would definitely return for another type of picking, and I'd recommend it to others. Just make sure you check the website for the availability of the fruit or veggies you want that day.

The veritable cherry on top of their cornucopia of fruits, vegetables, jarred foods, baked goodies, pretzels, popcorn, candies, and frozen foods is their Whoopie Pie Festival, which we attended today. The Festival runs on Feb. 26-28 & March 5-7 between 9am - 4pm. Essentially, you can create Your Own Whoopie Pie for $4 each, 4 or more at $3.50 each, and 12 or more $3 each. Here's how it works - make your customized selections of one of 12 cookies, one of 11 frostings, and one of 7 toppings, and Brecknock will build your pie. I went full Elvis mode and selected banana cookies, peanut butter frosting, and chocolate chip toppings around the circumference. We had a great time at Brecknock -making our Whoopie pies, playing a whoopie pie trivia game, and picking up a few odds and ends for us and friends. PRO TIP Hats off to Brecknock for their generosity and hospitality. They had free samples everywhere- whoopie pie wedges, pretzels, popcorn, and all sorts of goodies. It worked on us, because after sampling some honey mustard pretzels, we couldn't grab a bag fast enough.

We picked several types of apples (these apples lasted for weeks--fresh, natural, and no pesticides or growth hormones). They also have seasonal offerings like a pumpkin patch in the fall and berries when in season, so there's always a reason to come back. In this instance, we were on the hunt for apple cider donuts. We found the donuts (delicious!) and a whole lot more. True to the name, Mt Airy is a working orchard and farm with a very impressive farm store operation. On this fall day, there was a dizzying selection of produce, baked goods, frozen prepared foods (pies and more), gourds, pumpkins, apples, and much more. There are apparently pick your own opportunities as well. Parking is plentiful and Mt Airy is well-staffed with a very friendly team of folks. The farm store is immaculate. Note that Mt Airy is in a very rural area off winding, narrow roads. Pay attention to your GPS and drive carefully. Highly recommend this York County gem.
